ARIJ also thanks all the staff who worked throughout the past couple of years towards the accomplishment of this work. 1 Palestinian Localities Study Jerusalem Governorate Background This report is part of a series of booklets, which contain compiled information about each city, village, and town in the Jerusalem Governorate. These booklets came as a result of a comprehensive study of all villages in Jerusalem Governorate, which aims at depicting the overall living conditions in the governorate and presenting developmental plans to assist in developing the livelihood of the population in the area. It was accomplished through the "Village Profiles and Needs Assessment;" the project funded by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID). The "Village Profiles and Needs Assessment" was designed to study, investigate, analyze and document the socio-economic conditions and the needed programs and activities to mitigate the impact of the current unsecure political, economic and social conditions in the Jerusalem Governorate. The project's objectives are to survey, analyze, and document the available natural, human, socioeconomic and environmental resources, and the existing limitations and needs assessment for the development of the rural and marginalized areas in the Jerusalem Governorate. -

A WALL IN JERUSALEM: OBSTACLES TO HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE HOLY CITY Summer 2006 The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories Human Rights Jerusalem, a center for faith and a symbol of hope, presents a sad reality: segregation, discrimination and deprivation of basic human needs are the daily lot of an entire community. Lior Mizrahi, Bau Lior Mizrahi, 2 in the Holy City It is difficult to speak about Jerusalem in an indifferent manner. Discussions about Jerusalem - a holy city for Judaism, Christianity and Islam - are loaded with symbolism, religious sentiment and nationalist rhetoric. To quote Yehuda Amichai, one of Israel's finest poets: The air above Jerusalem is filled with prayers and dreams Like air above cities with heavy industry Hard to breathe From time to time a new shipment of history arrives Nevertheless, Jerusalem is not just a symbol, but also a living city, and the latest shipment of history - Israel's 1967 occupation of East Jerusalem - is not a history of prophets and profound truths. It is a history of dispossession, systematic discrimination and an ongoing assault on the basic rights of the Palestinian residents of the city. It doesn't have to be this way. Instead of exacerbating social divisions, Israeli policy could advance Jerusalem's standing as a vibrant, prosperous and beautiful city of pluralism and tolerance. This publication is intended for those who want Jerusalem to be a city of justice, a city where all its residents can live in safety and dignity. The focus of the publication is the Separation Barrier that Israel is currently constructing around the city, which is a source of great suffering for those who live along its route. -

However, 8,500 people still remain internally displaced. • On 25 May, 120,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine arrived through the COVAX 1,006 Children injured mechanism, with 45,000 doses already delivered to the Gaza Strip. • The three major desalination plants in the Gaza Strip are back in operation, (946 Palestinians & 60 operating for 8 hours each per day, serving approximately 370,000 people. Israelis) • UNICEF with partners mobilized over 1,000 adolescent volunteers towards clean-up efforts and to provide support to internally displaced persons in the 8,500 Internally Gaza Strip in the aftermath of the recent escalation. Housing Issues in East Jerusalem
East Jerusalem Student research and field work address the collision of law, history, and emotion he concept of “competing HOUSE narratives” came up repeatedly as students in Professor Curtis Bradley’s spring seminar characterized the subject of their intensive academic study and HOME field work — housing rights in East Jerusalem. “There is, at minimum, an Israeli and a Palestinian narrative, and there’s quite a lot of diversity within those,” James Pearce ’11 told an audience of fellow students and Duke Law faculty on March 31, shortly after he and 10 classmates returned from a research trip to Jerusalem and the West Bank. The trip was sponsored by the Center for International and Comparative Law, which Bradley co-directs. Over eight days they toured the disputed area, talking to Palestinian and Israeli resi- dents, government officials, lawyers, activists, academics, and international aid workers, observing how the international law, interna- tional human rights law, and history they had been researching in preparation for the trip played out on the ground. The trip “brought the dispute to life in >V]b](/ZSfO\R`O9]S\WU¸ >V]b](/ZSfO\R`O9]S\WU¸ a way that simply reading about it couldn’t because we were able to see the people whose lives are actually shaped by these dif- ferent policy positions and decisions every day,” said Sarah Boyce ’12. “It reminded us that there really are strong policy positions on both sides.
