Mt. Alvernia Peru Immersion Program 2019 LIMA | ICA | CUSCO & MACHU PICCHU v. October 19, 2018-FAM EdOdyssey works with a select number of schools and colleges to craft one-of-a-kind, authentic educational experiences for students. This program has been specifically designed for high school students at Mt. Alvernia High School and the experience has been carefully curated to complement the objectives of the language program and the school’s mission. Program webpage: www.edodyssey.com/mahs DAY 1 - JUNE 13, 2019* (BOSTON → LIMA) TBD Meet at Logan International Airport The group will check-in together All day: Fly from Boston to Lima exact flight schedule TBD Evening: Check-in hotel in Lima *departure date is subject to change slightly until airfare is confirmed. DAY 2 - JUNE 2019– LOS PUEBLOS JOVENES (LIMA) Learn about the emergence of the Pueblos Jovenes around Lima over the past 30 years and how, in community, they have redefined the layout of Peru’s capital. In the afternoon, we will explore the arts district of Lima and visit the coast. Today will give context to understand Lima today. Morning: Breakfast at hotel EdOdyssey Program Welcome / Overview / Orientation Museo Nacional de Arqueología, Antropología e Historia del Perú It’s one of our favorites in Lima and does a great job covering most of Peru’s long history. During our visit we will just be exploring the colonial exhibit to learn more about the European influence on today’s Republic of Peru (and will learn even more in the afternoon when we visit downtown). Later, in Cusco, we will witness the influence of indigenous cultures. Here we will visit the “Puente de los Suspiros,” walk down the “Bajada de los Pescadores” to the ocean, and have the opportunity to browse local art and artisan creations. Evening: Dinner Group reflection DAY 3 - JUNE 2019– THE ECONOMIC DIVIDE (LIMA) Serve the poor in solidarity, analyze the socio-economic reality of Peru, and witness first hand the great gap between the wealthy and poor that exists throughout Latin America. Morning: Breakfast at hotel Service project in Pamplona Alta EdOdyssey has maintained a close bond with this special community, Pamplona Alta, for many years. It is a vibrant community, but also one of the poorest and most marginalized. For many families, running water and electricity are a luxury they do not have. Here we will work together with the community leaders to build stairs high up in the mountain where access is limited. Afternoon: Visit and explore the famous Miraflores District + Fun Spanish Lesson Malecón Cisneros, Parque del Amor and Larcomar. During our walk when we arrive to the Parque de Amor we have a fun Spanish lesson planned too to polish our language skills - don’t worry, we’ve planned it for students at any language level! Evening: Dinner Group reflection DAY 4 - JUNE 2019– FUN IN THE SUN (ICA) Learn about the preservations efforts to protect this important coastal region as we tour the ocean in boat and have the opportunity to see dolphins, sea lions, seas, and other creatures around the Islas Ballestas. Later in nearby Ica, we will discover the true coastal desert climate of Peru while we have a blast sand boarding through the sand dunes, and enjoy a delicious sunset barbeque. Morning: Early Breakfast (6am) Visit to the coastal city of Paracas and the Islas Ballestas (arrive around 10am) During our boat ride around the Islas Ballestas we will see the Candelabro, a mysterious geoglyph that dates back to 200 B.C. Our boat cruise will also show us the incredible diversity of nature including sea lions, seals, pelicans, turtles, and dolphins. Afternoon Lunch in Paracas Travel to La Huacachina Visit to the desert oasis La Huacachina where we will sand board and sand buggy through the dunes before, enjoy an amazing sunset and have a cookout in the desert! Alvernia Peru Immersion Program 2019 LIMA | ICA | CUSCO & MACHU PICCHU Evening Return to Lima DAY 5 - JUNE 2019– DAY IN THE SHOES OF A TYPICAL PERUVIAN (LIMA) Bear witness to the incredible story and legacy of the late Fr. Garín who lifted the hearts of an entire community through his dream of a better education for all the children. Our close friend, Agustín, will greet us. He has overseen the entire school’s operation and the fundraising efforts that supports the education and welfare of the Jicamarca community. In the afternoon we will discover the cultural rich and historically important downtown area of Lima. Morning: Breakfast Visit “Corazón de Jesús” A K-12 school located in Jicamarca, a poor area of Lima. Here we will be learn about the story of Jesuit priest who committed his entire life to this community and personally raised the funds to construct this school that has become the heart of the entire community. We will visit classes, learn about the community, play with the children, and enjoy lunch in the school cafeteria with the students. Lunch with students at School Afternoon: Cookout and Peruvian Traditions Spend the afternoon at the home of a local Peruvian family, eat traditional food and celebrate with music and dance Peru’s Independence Day! Group Reflection DAY 6 - JUNE 2019– SCHOOL IN PERU (LIMA) Today we will discover what middle-class / upper-middle class life is like for students in Peru. In the morning we will spend some time at a very good all-girls local school in Lima. In the afternoon, we will be able to better connect with the local students as we host a fun BBQ in the home of a local family. Morning: Breakfast Visit all-girls Catholic High School Mt. Alvernia will continue its relationship with a top, local Catholic school to witness a school setting similar to that Greater Boston. We will spend the day in classes, enjoy lunch with the girls and have lots of fun. Afternoon: Downtown Lima We will spend the afternoon in the center of Lima exploring the cities historical roots, beautiful colonial architecture and Spanish heritage. The Presidential Palace, Cathedral, and catacombs of San Francisco are all part of the itinerary. © 2018 Edodyssey | All Rights Reserved 3 Mt. Alvernia Peru Immersion Program 2019 LIMA | ICA | CUSCO & MACHU PICCHU Dinner & Group Reflection DAY 7 - JUNE 2019– DISCOVERING THE CAPITAL OF THE INCAN EMPIRE (CUSCO) Explore the capital of the Incan Empire, try traditional Incan cuisine, and see the influence of the indigenous culture on arts and textiles. Morning: Breakfast Fly from Lima to Cusco (flight TBD) Once we arrive to Cusco we will check in the hotel and take some time to let our bodies adapt to the altitude. Afternoon: Check-in to hotel in Cusco Lunch in Cusco Ceramic Class We will go to a local ceramic class and will learn about the meaning of El Torito de Pucará, which is very known in Cusco because of its representation of the Peruvian South-Andean identity. We will be able to make our own Torito de Pucará! It won’t be ready before we leave the class, but our teacher will bring them to us before we take our plane back to Lima on the last day. Dinner & Group Reflection DAY 8 - JUNE 2019– THE SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS (CUSCO) Discover the amazing Amaru community and enjoy some beautiful views around Cusco. All day: Breakfast Visit Amaru Community We will have a short bus ride to Amaru, a local community one hour away from the city, where we will spend the entire day with locals, like locals! We will learn about their agriculture, textiles and gastronomy. We will prepare our own food with help from our Amaru friends! After we also have a (surprise) stop to discover local animals (llama, vicuña and alpaca) Afternoon: Return to Cusco, dinner & reflection DAY 9 - JUNE 2019– JOURNEY TO MACHU PICCHU (CUSCO) Visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World and understand why so many describe Machu Picchu as a powerful spiritual experience. Morning: Breakfast Train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) Explore the famous ruins of Machu Picchu! Our day will be lead by a local guide who is an expert on Cusco and the Incan Empire. © 2018 Edodyssey | All Rights Reserved 4 Mt. Alvernia Peru Immersion Program 2019 LIMA | ICA | CUSCO & MACHU PICCHU Afternoon: Lunch and take train back to Cusco Evening: Dinner DAY 10 - JUNE 2019 – HANDMADE TEXTILES (LIMA) A final opportunity to explore and purchase local, handmade crafts and souvenirs before returning home to Boston. Morning: Breakfast Cusco City Tour We will walk around the city of Cusco, the “Plaza de Armas” (downtown Cusco), the Cathedral, discover the Sun Temple and a different type of ruins called Sacsayhuaman! Afternoon: Fly from Cusco to Boston via Lima (Flights TBD) Evening: Dinner at airport DAY 11 - JUNE - FLY BACK HOME 2018 (LIMA TO BOSTON) TBD: Families pick-up students at Boston Airport (around 2pm) Please track the flight en route for exact landing time and gate information. © 2018 Edodyssey | All Rights Reserved 5 Mt. Alvernia Peru Immersion Program 2019 LIMA | ICA | CUSCO & MACHU PICCHU Program Fee: The all-inclusive, per participant program fee for Mt. Alvernia’s Peru Immersion trip is $3,300. USD including international airfare. With our program fee there are no surprises – we promise.
