43E Festival International Du Film De La Rochelle Du 26 Juin Au 5 Juillet 2015 Le Puzzle Des Cinémas Du Monde

Like our Northwest Film & Video Festival, which celebrates the unique visions of artists in our community, PIFF seeks to engage, educate, entertain and challenge. We invite you to explore and celebrate not only the art of film, but also the world around you. It is said that film is a universal language—able to transcend geographic, political and cultural boundaries in a singular fashion. In the spirit of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous observation, “There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler who is foreign,” this year’s films allow us to discover what unites rather than what divides. The Festival also unites our community, bringing together culturally diverse audiences, a remarkable cross-section of cinematic voices, public and private funders of the arts, corporate sponsors and global film industry members. This fabulous ecology makes the event possible, and we wish our credits at the back of the program could better convey our deep appreci- ation of all who help make the Festival happen. -

Tarkovsky's Legacy. Tarkovskian Inspirations in Contemporary Cinema
Marina Pellanda Tarkovsky’s legacy Tarkovskian inspirations in contemporary cinema THE STORY ACCORDING TO TARKOVSKY In his Répertoire, French writer Michel Butor imagined all men to be „continu- ously immersed like in a washtub“ in stories (Butor 1960, 1). Everything that is „other than us“, wrote the author, is known to us not because we have seen it but because someone has told us about it, with the configurations of meaning that make every narrated event something to communicate to others. In order to ex- ist, the story must allow itself first to be indiscriminately fragmented, and then forcibly reassembled. If we agree with Butor that narration seems to engulf us like water in a wash- tub, it is also true that every story remains essentially impossible to tell: as an in- tegral part of nature surrounding us, it is intolerant of any form of manipulation, since every manipulation is a meaningful organization of the awareness of time. Chained to the „present“ that is brought to life in every story, the imagination seems prevalently to be subject to a time that, along the lines of Schiller, we might define as „extraneous time“ (cfr. Morelli 1995, 13); nevertheless, it is often true that the user – be he a spectator or a reader – is allowed to proceed at an uneven pace through the event in which he is partaking, thereby tailoring the experi- ence to his own subjective needs. When this happens – for example in Sterne’s Tristram Shandy gentleman, or Joyce’s Ulysses or in the films of Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky who, while at the very back of a long shot and still out of focus, is slowly moving towards these pages – a standardization occurs that for some may be the emblem of an authentic waste of time, whereas for more insight- 549 Marina Pellanda ful eyes, it appears as a concession: the author grants the reader or spectator, the right to experience his own excursions through time. -

The festival will run from Nov 21ST to Nov 24TH at the Walter Reade Theater (Lincoln Center) and at the Wang Center of Long Island, with a curated selection of movies showcasing the best of contemporary Italian cinema: over the course of four days we offer great authors, young directors, US and New York premieres and indepth movie analysis. Over the course of the few last years, Italian cinema has become more and more eclectic, able to surprise and renew itself, both in regards of themes and language, while the productions keep making room for new authors, which is a constant stimulus for the spectators and the industry alike. This is why the effort we put into promoting Italian cinema abroad turns into true pleasure. The most awaited appointment of this edition will take place at the Walter Reade Theater (Lincoln Center), where we proudly host the maestro Marco Bellocchio and his renown actor Pierfrancesco Favino. -

THE CINEMA of MARCO BELLOCCHIO, a Mo
Left to right: Marco Bellocchio on set, Fists in the Pocket (1965), Vincere (2009) Thursday 17 May 2018, London. The BFI today announces full details of SATIRE AND MORALITY: THE CINEMA OF MARCO BELLOCCHIO, a month-long season (1 July – 31 July) celebrating the work of the award-winning Italian director MARCO BELLOCCHIO (Fists in the Pocket, A Leap in The Dark, My Mother’s Smile, Vincere). A regular on the festival circuit including the BFI London Film Festival, and winner of awards at Berlin, Venice and Cannes, Bellocchio is still today one of the most distinguished and original filmmakers to have emerged from Italy in the 1960s. As a taster for the season, which is the first ever comprehensive retrospective of Bellocchio’s films, there will be a rare onstage appearance by the director on Saturday 23 June, when he will be in conversation at BFI Southbank with season curator Adrian Wootton. The season, which is in partnership with Istituto Luce-Cinecittà and the Italian Cultural Institute London, will also be complemented by screenings at the Ciné Lumière, offering audiences an opportunity to discover a rich, distinctive body of ambitious and beautifully realised films. Bellocchio was keen for this complete retrospective to take place in London, as he studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts in 1963-64. It was during this time that he wrote his first feature film Fists in the Pocket (I Pugni in Tasca), the remarkable debut which which takes a satirically sharp axe to 1960s Italian society, and the manners and behaviour of a wealthy family. -
