Joyfully Gifted Resources for Youth Ministry Joyfully Gifted Leader Guide DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND 1404 EAST 9TH STREET CLEVELAND OH 44114 Acknowledgements The creation of this manual was made possible because of the spiritual gifts, time and talent of many people. Their help and participation served as a witness to a message included in the Year of Faith Pastoral Letter written by Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon: “As members of the Church we are obliged to witness to our faith. Each one of us is sent into the world to joyfully witness to God’s love and our relationship with Jesus Christ.” Joyfully Gifted Resources for Youth Ministry Committee Terrie Baldwin Director of Evangelization, Diocese of Cleveland Francine Costantini Coordinator of Youth Ministry, St. Barnabas, Northfield Mark Delsander Youth and Young Adult Ministry Specialist, Catholic Charities Terri Preskar Director of Stewardship, Catholic Community Foundation, Diocese of Cleveland Beth Rossetti Certified Lay Ecclesial Minister, St. Justin Martyr, Eastlake Terri Yohman Youth Minister, St. Martin of Tours, Valley City Information It is our hope that you will fully explore this resource and direct any questions to: Office of Evangelization – Terrie Baldwin 216-696-6525 (800-869-6525) x2540 [email protected] Office of Stewardship – Terri Preskar 216-696-6525 (800-869-6525) x5090 [email protected] Website All contents of this leader’s guide and additional resources may be found in electronic form at: http://www.dioceseofcleveland.org/evangelization/joyfully-gifted-ym/ Copyright © 2016 Diocese of Cleveland Permission is given to duplicate with acknowledgement given to the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio. In a very short time, several youth ministers in the diocese expressed a desire to redevelop the materials with more age appropriate activities and media options for those in grades 8-12. In partnership with the Offices of Evangelization, Stewardship, and the Youth and Young Adult Ministries Office, a team of lay leaders has been meeting since that time to offer what is now in hand: Joyfully Gifted Resources for Youth Ministry Leader Guide. The recommended format for the Joyfully Gifted spiritual gift discernment process is a retreat, prayerful personal discernment and a series of group follow-up sessions. At the retreat, participants will learn what a spiritual gift is, use a questionnaire to begin discovering their charisms and be engaged in activities with their peers to learn how to begin using their similar and differing gifts with others in order to build the kingdom of God at home, school, work, church and in the wider community. This Leader Guide will provide the recommended resources necessary to begin a Joyfully Gifted process including: Catechesis and Formation Retreat PowerPoint Sample Retreat Formats Activity Instructions Group Follow-up Meeting Instructions Additional resources and the electronic version of this Leader Guide and all supporting documents can be found at http://www.dioceseofcleveland.org/evangelization/joyfully-gifted-ym/. These materials were developed for use with emphasis on offering a foundation for helping to form youth in the discovery of their spiritual gifts which hopefully will begin to provide a deeper understanding for further prayerful discernment of what God is calling them to. These resources are being offered to parish youth ministry teams to provide adaptable and flexible choices for spiritual gift discovery and discernment for youth so they may go forth to glorify the Lord by their lives. www.dioceseofcleveland.org/evangelization/joyfully-gifted-ym/ page 5 Catechetical and Formation Resources Prayer to the Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ Our Lord, Amen. From Scripture (1Timothy 4:12-14) “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.” Quote from Pope Benedict XVI (25 April 2005 Address to the German Pilgrims) “This is why young people are - you are - once again fully open to Christ. Christ did not promise an easy life. Those who desire comforts have dialed the wrong number. Rather, he shows us the way to great things, the good, towards an authentic human life.” Quotes from Pope Francis (Joy of the Gospel, 130-131) “The Holy Spirit also enriches the entire evangelizing church with different charisms. These gifts are meant to renew and build up the church.” “They (charisms) are not an inheritance, safely secured and entrusted to a small group for safekeeping, rather they are gifts of the Spirit integrated into the body of the Church, drawn to the center which is Christ and then channeled into an evangelizing impulse…The Holy Spirit also enriches the entire evangelizing church with different charisms. These gifts are meant to renew and build up the church.” page 6 diocese of cleveland Charism Basics (Catechism of the Catholic Church) • A charism is a spiritual gift, given by God to each at Baptism and strengthened by the Sacraments. • Each person has at least one, some have more. • Charisms are used to serve God and are used for others. • Charisms have natural and supernatural characteristics, for the giver and the receiver. Recognizing Charisms • An unmistakable inner experience of peace, energy, joy and satisfaction • There is evidence of its fruitfulness (unusually effective and successful results) • Affirmation received from others Discerning Charisms Charisms are instruments of evangelization that reveal Jesus to others and render his presence known. In using one’s charisms a person becomes an instrument, an agent of God’s purpose in this world, channels of his love, truth, and healing provisions specifically given to be used for others. While use of charisms provides fruitfulness in the lives of other people, they also represent a call for the user. Spiritual gifts are not hobbies, but clues for how God is calling one personally. Discernment can provide a major clue as to one’s vocation, with charisms serving as tools given to accomplish each person’s unique mission for God. A prayerful discernment process enables a person to use the gifts given to them by God in Baptism in order to help build the Church.
