H.: A contribution to the knowledge of the algal flora of Tyrol. Synopsis: Interesting, little known and new flagellates and algae (exclu- ding diatoms and desmids) from the small waters and peat-bogs in the environment of Innsbruck, Seefeld, Obergurgl and Kühtai (700, 1200, 2000 and 2300 m. a. s. 1.) are described and pictured. The morphology and taxonomy of the taxa is discussed and compared with the data of other authors. Most of the taxa were observed and drawn in living stage im- mediately after collection. Ulotrichales 338 Literaturverzeichnis 349 Einleitung Die Moore und Kleingewässer, vor allem jene der Gebirge, gehören wohl zu den interessantesten Gewässertypen, weil in solchen oft sehr formenreiches Algenmaterial vorkommt. Der ziemlich einseitige Chemismus, dabei sei vor allem auf die Humin- stoffe hingewiesen, bedingt das Auftreten einer großen Anzahl von Arten, die anders- wo nicht zu finden sind. Viele der in Sphagneten, Mooren und anderen dystrophen Kleingewässern vorkommenden Algen sind kosmopolitisch verbreitet, so daß die Möglichkeit besteht auch die Variationsbreite und Änderung, die durch verschiedene Einflüsse bedingt sind, in verschiedensten Proben zu verfolgen. Dies bezieht sich natürlich vor allem auf die häufigsten Arten, wie z. B. Gloeodinium montanum, Chlorobotrys polychloris, Asterococcus superbus, Eremosphaera viridis u. ä., abgesehen von den vielen Desmidiaceen, die auch in jeder fixierten Probe identifiziert werden können. Der Großteil solcher Gewässer ist zwar durch Blaualgen, Diatomeen und Desmidiaceen gekennzeichnet, aber man darf nicht vergessen, daß gerade in solchem Algengemisch viele zarte Arten auftreten, die wegen ihrer großen Empfindlichkeit durch Fixation verloren gehen. Und es sind gerade solche, die auch diese Gewässer- typen mitcharakterisieren und ohne deren Kenntnis die Angaben unvollkommen sind. Deswegen wird in letzter Zeit diesen Algen große Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet und man ist bestrebt, diese gleich an Ort und Stelle oder jedenfalls möglichst bald nach dem Einsammehl im lebenden Zustand zu untersuchen. Daß die Formenfülle 178 © Naturwiss.-med. Ver. Innsbruck; download unter www.biologiezentrum.at der zarten Algen und auch der Flagellaten groß ist, braucht wohl nicht betont zu wer- den. Wie andere Autoren festgestellt haben und meine eigenen Erfahrungen bestäti- gen, scheinen besonders die hochgelegenen Moore noch viele interessante, wenig bekannte und auch völlig neue Organismen zu beherbergen, deren Bau und Lebens- weise zu wenig erforscht sind. Die Algenflora der hochgelegenen Moore und Klein- gewässer ist bestimmt nicht artenarm im Vergleich zu solchen Gewässern in der Ebene. Im Gegenteil, oft können extremere Standortsbedingungen eine besonders formenreiche und interessante Artenfülle hervorbringen. Abgesehen davon, daß durch die kosmopolitische Verbreitung in den Gebirgsmooren auch Arten vorkommen kön- nen, die aus den Mooren niederer Lagen beschrieben wurden. Funde der letzten Zeit zeigen, daß z. B. Arten, die KoESCHIKOFF aus den Mooren der Ukraine beschrieben hat, auch im Hochgebirge beobachtet wurden. Weil die zarten Formen der Kleingewässer gegen jede Änderung des Milieus sehr empfindlich sind, ist vorläufig auch jede Kultivation schwierig, wenn nicht unmöglich. So ist dann jeder Fund im Freiland von besonderem Wert, um den Variabüitäts- bereich, den Zellbau, die Entwicklung und Fortpflanzung wie auch den Einfluß von Standortsbedingungen auf die einzelnen Arten kennen zu lernen. Neue Entdeckungen über die Morphologie, Zytologie und Entwicklungsgeschichte der einzelnen Formen können dann wieder das so erstrebte phylogenetische System ergänzen helfen und den Bauplan der einzelnen Gruppen präzisieren. Deshalb habe ich die Einladung zur Untersuchung der Tiroler Kleingewässer mit großer Freude angenommen. Weil aber die alpinen Algen, vor allem Gruppen, die in fixiertem Zustand identifiziert werden können, gut bekannt sind, habe ich mich nur den wenig bekannten und auch den zarten Formen, die im lebenden Zustand untersucht werden müssen, zugewandt. Dieser Beitrag ist bei weitem keine floristische oder monographische Bearbeitung des untersuchten Gebietes, weil nur ein kleiner Teil der formenreichen Algenflora fest- gehalten wurde. Der Aufenthalt war zu kurz, als daß ich die verschiedensten Gewässer eingehend studieren hätte können; auch habe ich die Proben weder systematisch noch in bestimmten zeitlichen Intervallen entnommen. Es handelt sich eher um Stich- proben, die sich auf einige an Algen reichhaltigere Gewässer bezogen. Aber schon bei diesen räumlich und zeitlich beschränkten Probenentnahmen habe ich so viel interessantes Material gefunden, das einer näheren Untersuchung wert war, daß der Beitrag zu solchem Umfang anwuchs. Außerdem waren in den Proben mehrere wenig bekannte Arten und sogar auch einige neue Taxa vorhanden. Der Großteil der hier beschriebenen und angeführten Taxa wurde abgebildet, um einerseits eventuelle Abweichungen vom Typus oder Details des Bauplanes zu zeigen, andererseits aber auch um weiteren algologischen Untersuchun- gen des Gebietes eine Hilfe zu bieten. Um klarzulegen, nach welchen Bestimmungs- werken oder nach welcher algologischen Spezialliteratur die einzelnen Sippen bestimmt oder verglichen wurden, ist bei jeder besprochenen Form eine kurze Zitation angeführt, die auf das reiche Literaturverzeichnis am Schluß verweist. Funde, die mit den Literaturangaben völlig übereinstimmen, und die schon anderswo klar abgebildet wurden, habe ich nur ganz kurz und ohne Abbildung angeführt. To facilitate the understanding of this problem, we collected surface water samples from January to December 2014 monthly at 12 sampling sites. A total of 205 taxa classified into eight major taxonomic groups were identified. Cyclotella meneghiniana, Melosira varians, Melosira granulata, Cryptomonas ovata and Chlorella vulgaris were the species dominating at least one season. The long stratification period and high nutrient concentration resulted in high chlorophyll a concentration (36.1 18.5 µg L 1) in the midstream and downstream during summer, ± − and mass phytoplankton growth and sedimentation process led to nutrients decrease. In the reservoir, neither P or N limitation was observed in the study period. We observed that water temperature, nutrient concentrations and light availability (Zeu/Zmix) are critical in selecting functional groups. These results highlight that the functional groups characterized the water body well and showed a good ecological status based on the assemblage index (Q average = 4.0).

Chlorophyta are abundant and diverse in freshwater envi- ronments where sometimes they form nuisance blooms under eutrophication conditions. The phylogenetic relation- ships among core chlorophyte clades (Chlorodendrophyceae, Ulvophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae and Chlorophyceae), are of particular interest as it is a species-rich phylum with ecological importance worldwide, but are still poorly understood. In the Mediterranean ecoregion, data on molecular characterization of eukaryotic microalgae strains are limited and current knowledge is based on ecological studies of natural populations. In the present study we report the isolation and characterization of 11 green microalgae strains from Greece contributing more information for the taxonomy of Chlorophyta. The study combined morphological and molecular data. Results: Phylogenetic analysis based on 18S rRNA, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the large subunit of the ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase (rbcL) gene revealed eight taxa. Eleven green algae strains were classifed in four orders (Sphaeropleales, Chlorellales, Chlamydomonadales and Chaetophorales) and were represented by four genera; one strain was not assigned to any genus. Most strains (six) were classifed to the genus Desmodesmus, two strains to genus Chlorella, one to genus Spongiosarcinopsis and one flamentous strain to genus Uronema. One strain is placed in a separate independent branch within the Chlamydomonadales and deserves further research.

Accepted: April 13, 2006) ABSTRACT Hormotila ramosissima Kor., a very rare in the world and poorly known species, have been found in peat bogs of Lower Silesia. The growth stages typical of this species but unknown so far, have been described and illustra- ted. It was found that this species has many features in common with the representatives of Volvocales, Tetraspo- rales, and chlorococcales. The regularly observed zoospores and hemizoospores, which accompanied the various developmental stages of that species, showed an internal structure of Chlamydomonas-type. Studies on Hormotila ramosissima were based on live material collected in ample quantities from peat bogs. The collected in this way repeatable and abundant data allowed to discuss problems concerning morphology, reproduction and development, as well as consider the taxonomic position this species. This diverse group of autotrophic organisms can UV spectra rapidly produce large biomass per surface area. These phyto-compounds were qualitatively analysed using TLC and mass spectrometry biochemical methods. Solvent extracts of fresh samples were subjected to preliminary identification by UV Microalgae Bioactive metabolites spectra and thin layer chromatography. Furthermore, GC-MS and HPLC analysis were conducted to identify and characterize pharmacologically potent molecules. Major Phytochemicals such as phenolic, flavonoids, pigments, protein, and carbohydrates were present in both the samples. This was primarily subjected to UV spectral analysis and TLC chromatogram. The chemical diversity of compounds was further confirmed using GC MS and HPLC. 1. The aim of this thesis was to examine the in vitro biological activities of phenolic compounds, carotenoids and protein hydrolysates from three edible green macroalgae (Ulva ohnoi, Derbesia tenuissima and Oedogonium intermedium) cultured in tropical Australia. The phenolic components were extracted with 60% aqueous ethanol and their antioxidant activities were determined by four different assays (ABTS, DPPH, FRAP and ORAC). The extracts exhibited moderate levels of antioxidant activities. However, analysis of the extracts by HPLC-PDA, GC-MS, LC-MS and 1H NMR failed to detect any phenolic components, while a number of free amino acids, fatty acids and sugars were found, which were likely responsible for the measured antioxidant activities. Carotenoids were extracted from the algae by dichloromethane, and the extracts exhibited significant antioxidant activities, as well as potent inhibitory effects against several metabolically important enzymes including α-amylase, α-glucosidase, pancreatic lipase and hyaluronidase. However, the carotenoid extracts were poor inhibitors of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE).
