Doty SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 554 A MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE REGULAR SESSION 2017 By: Senator(s) Doty To: Rules SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 554 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING LAURA 2 LEE LEWIS OF BROOKHAVEN, MISSISSIPPI, UPON BEING CROWNED MISS 3 MISSISSIPPI 2016 AND AS THE FOURTH RUNNER-UP IN THE MISS AMERICA 4 PAGEANT ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2016. 5 WHEREAS, Miss Mississippi Laura Lee Lewis was the Fourth 6 Runner-Up in the Miss America Pageant on Sunday, September 11, 7 2016. Laura Lee was the third contestant from Mississippi to 8 place in the Top 10 Finalist in the Miss America Pageant since 9 2006; and 10 WHEREAS, the Brookhaven, Mississippi, native, an elementary 11 education major, is a President's List Scholar at Mississippi 12 State University. Laura was Miss Dixie when she was crowned Miss 13 Mississippi 2016 in June; and 14 WHEREAS, during the Miss America Talent Competition, it 15 appeared when Lewis hit the final line in her song "A Piece of 16 Sky" that says, "Just watch me fly," she knew she had a good 17 chance of winning; and 18 WHEREAS, the Mississippi State student and Brookhaven High 19 School graduate built her platform on "Mentoring Matters" which S. C. R. No. 554 *SS01/R157* ~ OFFICIAL ~ N1/2 17/SS01/R157 PAGE 1 (tb\rc) 20 encourages mentoring in the lives of young people. Lewis says it 21 was her high school principal who ultimately gave her the 22 leadership and courage she needed to overcome the perils of 23 teenhood and to grow into a strong woman who knows her worth. She 24 credits the Miss America Organization for giving her the 25 confidence in herself that she needed to compete as she got older; 26 and 27 WHEREAS, before her Miss Mississippi achievement, Laura Lee 28 was active in her community promoting her personal platform, 29 H.E.R.O. - Encouraging Children to Make Good Choices. Laura Lee 30 developed four guidelines to help youth remember how to be like 31 the superheroes, by using the word "HERO": 32 H Honor your parents, be honorable, and most of all honor 33 yourself; 34 E Excel in everything you do; 35 R Reach for goals; 36 O Overcome obstacles through positive actions/reactions; 37 and 38 WHEREAS, the other inspiration Laura Lee freely talks about 39 is her hometown. "Brookhaven will always be home," she said, and 40 she knew that she had the full support of her hometown people when 41 her name was called for Fourth Runner-Up in the Miss America 42 Pageant, and "The moment I was crowned Miss Mississippi, I heard 43 the cheers, and I knew that was Brookhaven and all the people who 44 have loved me throughout these years. No. 554 *SS01/R157* ~ OFFICIAL ~ 17/SS01/R157 PAGE 2 (tb\rc) 45 I appreciate them because they believed in me, and here I am their 46 Miss Mississippi, and I'm so excited to represent Brookhaven as 47 Miss Mississippi and now to represent Mississippi, at the Miss 48 America Pageant"; and 49 WHEREAS, Laura Lee is the daughter of Mark and Lorin Lewis of 50 Brookhaven and the niece of former Secretary of the Senate Tressa 51 Guynes, and it is with great pride that we recognize this young 52 Mississippi citizen who has brought honor to her community and to 53 the entire state: 54 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF 55 MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That 56 we do hereby commend and congratulate Laura Lee Lewis of 57 Brookhaven, Mississippi, upon being crowned Miss Mississippi 2016 58 and as the Fourth Runner-Up in the Miss America Pageant on 59 September 11, 2016. 60 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to 61 Laura Lee Lewis and made available to the Capitol Press Corps. So says Miss America 1971 — Phyllis George — who called her trip to Vietnam the highlight of her reign. But, Miss George — who turns in her crown and title in less than two weeks — expressed the hope that no future Miss America would have to visit Vietnam. "I hope this is the last USO tour that has to come here," she said. "I hope they bring our guys home — I guess most people do." Miss George and six state beauty pageant winners spent most of August visiting U.S. troops in Vietnam. The girls were scheduled to leave in early September. "This has been an outstanding way to end a year," Miss George said. "The guys here have made it rewarding for us." The 22-year-old brown-eyed brunette said this was the first time she had entertained in a combat zone. Sink or Swim: Deciding the Fate of the Miss America Swimsuit Competition Grace Slapak Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA ÒÏ Abstract: The Miss America beauty pageant has faced widespread criticism for the swimsuit portion of its show. Feminists claim that the event promotes objectification and oversexualization of contestants in direct contrast to the Miss America Organization’s (MAO) message of progressive female empowerment. The MAO’s position as the leading source of women’s scholarships worldwide begs the question: should women have to compete in a bikini to pay for a place in a cellular biology lecture? As dissent for the pageant mounts, the new head of the MAO Board of Directors, Gretchen Carlson, and the first all-female Board of Directors must decide where to steer the faltering organization. The MAO, like many other businesses, must choose whether to modernize in-line with social movements or whole-heartedly maintain their contentious traditions. When considering the MAO’s long and controversial history, along with their recent scandals, the #MeToo Movement, and the complex world of television entertainment, the path ahead is anything but clear. Ultimately, Gretchen Carlson and the Board of Directors may have to decide between their feminist beliefs and their professional business aspirations. Underlying this case, then, is the question of whether a sufficient definition of women’s leadership is simply leadership by women or if the term and its weight necessitate leadership for women. Will the board’s final decision keep this American institution afloat? And, more importantly, what precedent will it set for women executives who face similar quandaries of identity? Trisha Vijay, a recent University of California Berkeley graduate, was crowned the title of Miss Contra Costa County 2018. Trisha performed an entertaining Bollywood dance to, “Jiya Jale,” during the talent portion of competition. During the evening wear segment, she commanded the stage in her blush pink gown. “When I heard my name announced as Miss Contra Costa County, I was in shock and wasn’t sure if I heard the emcee correctly but I was ecstatic as I will get to represent my area at the Miss California State Competition!” said Vijay to her new Executive Directors, Paula Gross and Lindsey Nakashima, after she was crowned. After a small hiatus, the Miss Greater East Bay title was brought back this year and Danville resident, Alissa Anderegg, walked away with the 2018 title. Anderegg is a Duke University Graduate and current Northwestern University Masters in Journalism Candidate. She sang, “That’s Life,” in a fiery red dress during the talent phase of competition and graced the stage in an elegant ice blue gown for evening wear. “I am absolutely thrilled to be Miss Greater East Bay 2018.

    HISTORY OF THE OKLAHOMA STATE FAIR SCHOLARSHIP PAGEANTS The Miss Oklahoma State Fair pageant is a qualifier for the Miss America pageant. The first pageant was coordinated by Mr. Robert Yocham and was held during the Fair in 2000. Eight years later, Ms. LaRadius Allen would take over and add the teen pageant.
