Ichthyosaurs from the Lower Lias (Lower Jurassic) of Banwell, Somerset ICHTHYOSAURS FROM THE LOWER LIAS (LOWER JURASSIC) OF BANWELL, SOMERSET M.A. TAYLOR 1 AND R.D. CLARK 2 Taylor, M.A. and Clark, R.D. 2016. Ichthyosaurs from the Lower Lias (Lower Jurassic) of Banwell, Somerset. Geoscience in South-West England, 14, 59–71. Two Lower Jurassic ichthyosaurs, lost in a 1940s air raid, are identified from archival records and surviving 19th century plaster casts distributed by their owner, the Bristol Institution for the Advancement of Science, Literature and the Arts. One was the type specimen of Ichthyosaurus latimanus Owen, 1840. The other, initially labelled Ichthyosaurus intermedius Conybeare, 1822, was the first ichthyosaur in which remains of the soft tissue of the tail fin were identified, confirming Richard Owen’s earlier prediction. Unfortunately Owen’s published account conflated the two specimens, apparently by the erroneous transposition of a passage of text. Owen possibly regarded the second specimen as the type of I. intermedius. In 1889 Richard Lydekker referred it to Ichthyosaurus conybeari Lydekker, 1888. For unknown reasons, he caused further confusion by suppressing the fact that both ichthyosaur specimens came from Banwell. Banwell is shown to have been a minor but significant source of Lower Lias fossil vertebrates, and also the type locality of the fish Tetragonolepis monilifer Agassiz, 1837, apparently from quarries in the lowermost Jurassic beds at Knightcott. The Bristol Institution assisted Edward Wilson (1808–1888) to obtain at least some of the West Country marine reptiles which his brother Dr Thomas Bellerby Wilson (1807–1865) donated to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, U.S.A. -

It became popular amongst art students in Yogyakarta, and formed a significant style of painting which generally is characterised by the use of casual juxtapositions of disparate ideas and subjects resulting in absurd, startling, and sometimes disturbing images. In this thesis, Yogyakartan Surrealism is seen as the expression in painting of various social, cultural, and economic developments taking place rapidly and simultaneously in Yogyakarta's urban landscape. -

The paper used butterflies of the family Papilionidae as a model system for testing evolutionary hypotheses, and included a revision of the Papilionidae of the region, as well as the description of some 20 new species. Wallace argued that the Papilionidae were the most advanced butterflies, against some of his colleagues such as Bates and Trimen who had claimed that the Nymphalidae were more advanced because of their possession of vestigial forelegs. In a very important section, Wallace laid out what is perhaps the clearest Darwinist definition of the differences between species, geographic subspecies, and local ‘varieties.’ He also discussed the relationship of these taxonomic categories to what is now termed ‘reproductive isolation.’ While accepting reproductive isolation as a cause of species, he rejected it as a definition. Instead, species were recognized as forms that overlap spatially and lack intermediates. However, this morphological distinctness argument breaks down for discrete polymorphisms, and Wallace clearly emphasised the conspecificity of non-mimetic males and female Batesian mimetic morphs in Papilio polytes, and also in P. -

In 1821, a hide and skeleton of a young adult single-horned rhinoceros was received in Paris. DESMAREST(1822: 399-400) described it as "Rhinoceros sondaicus . Espece nouvelle, dkcouverte par MM. Although SODY'Shistorical arguments have not received any comment, most recent authors give the type locality as "probably Java" (e.g. HOOIJER1946: 6; GROVES1967: 233; HONACKIet al. 1982: 31 1; ROOKMAAKERin press). It is possible to settle this problem more definitively. STRESEMANN(1951: 146) summarized the more important biographical details of ALFREDDUVAUCEL (1793-1824) and PIERRE-MBDARDDIARD (1794-1863). DUVAUCEL,the stepson of GEORGESCUVIER, had been sent to India as "naturaliste du Roi" in 1817. -

In male, the tegmen tip reach the abdomen end or are slightly shorter, while in the female, it does not reach the abdominal end and exposes the abdomen beyond the 7th abdominal plate. We confirmed the validity of this new species by breeding the specimens in our laboratory to demonstrate that the features of the progeny were maintained for several generations. For comparison and easy identification of this new species, the key to species identification of the genus Periplaneta that had been reported in Japan to date are also presented. -
