Olga Planken, editor FPMT Edcuation Department May 2008 iv Middle length explanation of the stages of the path to enlightenment to be practiced by the three [types of] beings with supplementary insertions and a thematic structure CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Respectfully I prostrate at the feet of the venerable saints who are full of compassion. This here is the middling of three Lamrim texts - a great, a middle length and a small one - which the gentle 1 protector, Dharmaraja Tsongkhapa composed. It is also widely known as the “small Lamrim”. Its source text has three sections: 1 The introductory elements of the explanations 2 Composition of the explanations themselves 3 Their completion 1 The introductory elements of the explanations Expression of veneration and the vow of composition 1A Expression of veneration Bhagavan2, Lord of this world system of forbearance, Jina’s3 regent, Jamgon, Lord of the Dharma, Manjughosha, single father of all the sugatas4, Nagarjuna and Asanga, foretold by the Jina, bowing to you with respect 1B Vow of composition I shall once more give explanations here in a summary fashion of the gradual path of the most profound view and of vast conduct - making it easy to access. General introductory explanation of the instructions being taught here 1C Identification of the Dharma to be explained in the context of what the title means {2} The Dharma to be explained here consists in how the fortunate are lead to the level of buddhahood through the stages of the path to enlightenment. It summarises all the points of the Jina’s excellent speech, [following] the tradition of the two great trail-blazers Nagarjuna and Asanga, constitutes the Dharma system of supreme beings progressing to the state of omniscience, and contains all the stages without omission that the three [types of] beings need to practice. 2 Composition of the explanations themselves A Correspondence with the manner of explanation proposed by the scholars B The actual explanations in accordance with that 2A Correspondence with the manner of explanation proposed by the scholars 1 Middle Length Lam-Rim Introduction The scholars of glorious Vikramashila [monastery] considered it vital to start off with three preliminaries, i.e. the greatness of the author of the teachings, the greatness of the teachings and the way to explain and listen to them. 2B The actual explanations in accordance with that 1 Showing the greatness of the author in order to show that the teachings are venerable 2 Showing the greatness of the teachings in order to generate respect towards the instructions 3 How the teachings which are great in two ways should be listened to and explained 4 The stages by which a disciple should be guided through the actual instructions In accordance with that, the guide to the stages of the path to enlightenment has four [parts]: Showing the greatness of the author in order to show that the teachings are venerable, showing the greatness of the teachings in order to generate respect towards the instructions, how the teachings which are great in two ways should be listened to and explained, and the stages by which a disciple should be guided through the actual instructions.     SYNOPSIS OF TARANATHA'S HISTORY Synopsis of chapters I - XIII was published in Vol. V, NO.3. Diacritical marks are not used; a standard transcription is followed. MRT CHAPTER XIV Events of the time of Brahmana Rahula King Chandrapala was the ruler of Aparantaka. He gave offerings to the Chaityas and the Sangha. A friend of the king, Indradhruva wrote the Aindra-vyakarana. During the reign of Chandrapala, Acharya Brahmana Rahulabhadra came to Nalanda. He took ordination from Venerable Krishna and stu­ died the Sravakapitaka. Some state that he was ordained by Rahula­ prabha and that Krishna was his teacher. He learnt the Sutras and the Tantras of Mahayana and preached the Madhyamika doctrines. There were at that time eight Madhyamika teachers, viz., Bhadantas Rahula­ garbha, Ghanasa and others. The Tantras were divided into three sections, Kriya (rites and rituals), Charya (practices) and Yoga (medi­ tation). The Tantric texts were Guhyasamaja, Buddhasamayayoga and Mayajala. Bhadanta Srilabha of Kashmir was a Hinayaist and propagated the Sautrantika doctrines. At this time appeared in Saketa Bhikshu Maha­ virya and in Varanasi Vaibhashika Mahabhadanta Buddhadeva. There were four other Bhandanta Dharmatrata, Ghoshaka, Vasumitra and Bu­ dhadeva. This Dharmatrata should not be confused with the author of Udanavarga, Dharmatrata; similarly this Vasumitra with two other Vasumitras, one being thr author of the Sastra-prakarana and the other of the Samayabhedoparachanachakra. Abstract This article discusses a Khalkha reincarnate ruler, the First Jebtsundampa Zanabazar, who is commonly believed to be a Géluk protagonist whose alliance with the Dalai and Panchen Lamas was crucial to the dissemination of Buddhism in Khalkha Mongolia. Za- nabazar’s Géluk affiliation, however, is a later Qing-Géluk construct to divert the initial Khalkha vision of him as a reincarnation of the Jonang historian Tāranātha (1575–1634). Whereas several scholars have discussed the political significance of Zanabazar’s rein- carnation based only on textual sources, this article takes an interdisciplinary approach to discuss, in addition to textual sources, visual records that include Zanabazar’s por- traits and current findings from an ongoing excavation of Zanabazar’s Saridag Monas- tery. Clay sculptures and Zanabazar’s own writings, heretofore little studied, suggest that Zanabazar’s open approach to sectarian affiliations and his vision, akin to Tsongkhapa’s, were inclusive of several traditions rather than being limited to a single one. Tamara Sears has gestured at the same apparitions by pointing to the neglected study of monasteries (mathas) associated with Saiva temples.1 She finds the omission intriguing on two counts. First, these monasteries were built for and by significant teachers (gurus) who were identified as repositories of vast ritual, medical and spiritual knowledge, guides to their practice and over time, themselves manifestations of divinity and vehicles of human liberation from the bondage of life and suffering. Second, these monasteries were not studied even though some of these had existed into the early twentieth century. Sears implies that two processes have occurred simultaneously. Both are epistemological. One has resulted in a continuity of colonial- postcolonial politics of recognition. The identification of a site as ‘religious’ rested on the identification of a building as a temple or a mosque. Residential sites inhabited by religious figures did not qualify for preservation. The second is the foreshortening of scholarly horizons by disappeared buildings. Modern scholars, this suggests, can only study entities and relationships contemporaneous with them and perceptible to the senses, omitting those that evade such perception or have disappeared long ago. This is not as disheartening as one might fear.

    ~ Biographies of Dzogchen Masters ~ Jigme Lingpa: A Guide to His Works It is hard to overstate the importance of Jigme Lingpa to the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. This itinerant yogi, along with Rongzom Mahapandita, Longchenpa, and-later-Mipham Rinpoche, are like four pillars of the tradition. He is considered the incarnation of both the great master Vimalamitra and the Dharma king Trisong Detsen. After becoming a monk, he had a vision of Mañjuśrīmitra which caused him to change his monks robes for the white shawl and long hair of a yogi. In his late twenties, he began a long retreat during which he experienced visions and discovered termas. A subsequent retreat a few years later was the ​ ​ container for multiple visions of Longchenpa, the result of which was the Longchen Nyingthig tradition of terma texts, sadhanas, prayers, and instructions. What many consider the best source for understanding Jigme Lingpa's relevance, and his milieu is Tulku Thondup Rinpoche's Masters of ​ Meditation and Miracles: Lives of the Great Buddhist Masters of India and Tibet. While the biographical coverage of him only comprises ​ about 18 pages, this work provides the clearest scope of the overall world of Jigme Lingpa, his line of incarnations, and the tradition and branches of teachings that stem from him. Here is Tulku Thondup Rinpoche's account of his revelation of the Longchen Nyingtik. ​ ​ "At twenty-eight, he discovered the extraordinary revelation of the Longchen Nyingthig cycle, the teachings of the Dharmakāya ​ and Guru Rinpoche, as mind ter. In the evening of the ​ ​ twenty-fifth day of the tenth month of the Fire Ox year of the thirteenth Rabjung cycle (1757), he went to bed with an unbearable devotion to Guru Rinpoche in his heart; a stream of tears of sadness continuously wet his face because he was not 1 in Guru Rinpoche's presence, and unceasing words of prayers kept singing in his breath.
