IJAS_39192 Vol 8, Issue 6, 2020 ISSN- 2321-6832 Review Article GENERAL OVERVIEW OF PHYTOCHEMISTRY AND PHARMACOLOGICAL POTENTIAL OF RHEUM PALMATUM (CHINESE RHUBARB) AAMIR KHAN KHATTAK, SYEDA MONA HASSAN, SHAHZAD SHARIF MUGHAL* Department of Chemistry, Lahore Garrison University, Lahore, Pakistan, Email: [email protected] Received: 21 July 2020 , Revised and Accepted: 11 October 2020 ABSTRACT Recent probe of medicinal plants incorporated in traditional systems for curing infection and sustaining holistic health, has exposed good sum of therapeutic efficiency against deleterious infections and chronic illnesses. Rheum palmatum (Chinese Rhubarb, family Polygonaceae) is a significant medicinal herb, which finds an extensive use in Unani (Traditional) system of medicine. It has been traditionally employed as antiseptic, liver stimulant, diuretic, diabetes, stomachic, purgative/cathartic, anticholesterolemic, antitumor, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, tonic, antidiabetic, and wound healer. The most vital components from Rheum palmatum are the phenolics, flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, and anthraquinone derivatives such as aloe- emodin, chrysophanol, physcion, rhein, emodin and its glucorhein, and glycoside. Rhubarb also contains tannins which include hydrolysable-tannins, containing glycosidic or ester bonds composed of glucose, gallic acid, and other monosaccharide’s and condensed tannins, resulting principally from the flavone derivatives leukocyanidin and catechin. In recent years, new components such asrevandchinone-1, revandchinone-2, revandchinone-3, revandchinone-4, sulfemodin8-O-b-Dglucoside, and 6-methyl-rhein and aloe-emodin have been reported from the same class. It also encompasses some macro and micro mineral elements such as Ca, K, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, Na, Cu, and Li. Anthraquinone derivatives demonstrate evidence of anti- microbial, antifungal, anti-proliferative, anti-Parkinson’s, immune enhancing, anticancer, antiulcer, antioxidant, and antiviral activities. -

The structures of 1-5 were identified by comparison of their NMR data with literature data. Assadi: Research Prof., Research Institute of Forest and Rangelands, Tehran, Iran Abstract According to previous studies, the genus Rheum in Iran includes four species: R. turkestanicum Janisch ., R. persicum Losinsk ., R. ribes L. and R. khorasanicum Baradaran & Jafari. During the long-term study, based on field and many herbaria specimens, three new species including R. iranshahrii Taheri & Assadi sp. nov., R. kordestanicum Taheri & Assadi sp. nov. and R. austro-iranicum Taheri & Assadi sp. nov. were discovered in Iran. In this paper, all new species are compared with their putative relatives. Botanical characters are elaborated and a brief taxonomic synopsis for all accepted species is also provided. For thousands of years, Rhubarb has been used in the world for early spring vegetable and medicinal purposes (Rumpunen & Henriksen 1999). The roots of Rhubarb species have been widely used as a purgative and anti- inflammatory agent (Yang 1991). Moreover, the species grow rapidly and establish a big canopy on top of soil, protect it against water and wind erosion. -

Al-samarrai 3 1 Samarra university, College of applied sciences, Department of analysis pathological, IRAQ 2 Tikrit university, college of education and pure sciences, department of biology, IRAQ 3 Samarra university, College of education, Department of chemistry, IRAQ Abstract The study aimed to evaluate the effect of aqueous extract of R. ribes roots and metformin in treatment of induced PCOS. 40 adult female rabbits (1000-1600g) use in this study, 30 rabbits injected with TP (100mg/Kg) for 4 days consecutive and left 3 days for developing the syndrome. The female rabbits divided to four groups: C+ve group, C-ve group, G1 (R. ribes extract 300mg/Kg) and G2 (metformin group 20mg/Kg). Treatment period was 30 days. The hormonal and biochemical assays include: AMH, Testosterone, Insulin, HOMA-IR and Glucose levels. The results showed significant increase at P≥0.05 in levels of AMH, Testosterone, Insulin, HOMA-IR and Glucose in C+ve group compared to C-ve group while the treated groups (G1 and G2) showed significant decrease in a parameters compared with C+ve except Insulin levels in G2 which show non-significant difference compared to C-ve, C+ve and G1. The effects of dyeing show higher colour strength values obtained by the latter. Dyeing with Rheum ribes roots has been shown to give good dyeing results. The results of washing fastness properties of the dyed wool yarn were fair to good. CIELAB values have also been evaluated and discussed. INTRODUCTION Since prehistoric times, natural dyes have been used for many pur- poses such as the colouring of natural fibers wool, cotton and silk as well as fur and leather. The dyes were also used to colour cosmetic products and to produce inks, watercolours and artist's paints. The chemical structure of a dye molecule is divided in two parts i.e., the main chromophore and the auxochromes groups. The analysis of the natural dyes listed in Colour Index revealed that almost 50 % of all natural dyes used to colour textiles are flavonoid compounds. Most of the remain- ing natural dyes fall within 3 chemical classes viz., anthraquinones, naphtoquinones and indigoids1. The use of natural dyes to colour textiles declined rapidly after the discovery of synthetic dyes in 1856, until they were virtually unused by 1900.
