At its outset German U-boats were inflicting huge damage on Allied shipping, while in the land war the loss of one ally, Russia, was not compensated by the gain of another, the United States. How did the Allies swing the balance in their favour by the year’s end, particularly at sea? How central was Ireland (and Cork in particular) in this conflict? To address these and related questions join History Ireland editor,Tommy Graham, and the panel — John Borgonovo (UCC), Michael Kennedy (RIA’s Documents on Irish Foreign Policy), Jennifer Wellington (UCD) and Michael Martin (Titanic Trail). Cork Additional Information: In 1917 thousands of American naval servicemen came to Ireland to participate in the First World War. Their interactions with local women, particularly in Cork where they were based, became a major social issue. Many Irish women ultimately married these American sailors, with Queenstown / Cobh in particular seeing a large number of weddings. Who were these women and what were their stories? New research by Damian Shiels to identify them using U.S. passport applications has revealed something of the past - and the portraits of many. The exhibition at Sirius Arts Centre will consider a number of these images, and the stories of those young women depicted. Sirius Arts Centre is housed in the former Royal Cork Yacht Club building - a beautiful Italiante building that was designed by Anthony Salvin and built by James Smith Barry of Fota in 1854. The RCYC operated from here for over a century. During the First World War the building was used to host many of these American and British naval servicemen as a place to relax and socialize. Women were not permitted to socialize there nor could they become members of the yacht club until much later. Damian Shiels is an archaeologist and historian with Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd. Formerly a curator in the National Museum of Ireland, he is a specialist on Irish military archaeology and history, on which he has published and lectured widely both nationally and internationally. His latest book "The Forgotten Irish: Irish Emigrant Experiences in America" was published by The History Press in 2016. This exhibition is kindly supported by the Port of Cork. Cork Additional Information: During one of Ireland's darkest hours - the Great Famine - the Choctaw People sent aid to the country. The Choctaw People, dispossessed, poor and destitute though they were themselves and having suffered the infamous “Trail of Tears” only a few years before, made a donation of $170, a substantial sum at that time, to help men, women and children starving in Ireland in 1847. The “Kindred Spirits” Choctaw Monument is a token of our thanks to the Choctaw people for their generous, kind and inspiring act on our behalf. They had little for themselves but they gave what they had to help others, strangers half the world away. On the 18th of June we have the opportunity to say thank you in person to their representatives, Chief Gary Batton and Tribal Council Members of the Choctaw Nation. Everyone is welcome to attend so please come and bring your family and friends. We hope to share and enjoy (over a period of about 2 hours from 2 to 4 p.m.) aspects of our two cultures in language, song, music and dance and to remake and renew friendships between our two peoples. You can get further information about the Choctaw Gift and the “Kindred Spirits” sculpture by putting – Kindred Spirits – The Choctaw – Irish Band Lives On – into the search box on YouTube'.

It is not for scientists but about science, and those who are interested in our modern world , bringing scientists, historians, and those interested in culture together through lectures, discussions, guided historical walks, and a hedge school to explore the role of science in our lives and culture. The summer school celebrates Ireland’s most famous scientist Robert Boyle and takes place at the heritage towns of Lismore and Youghal. Lismore Castle was the birthplace of Robert Boyle and Youghal was one of the main bases of the Boyle family dynasty and burial place of Robert’s father, Richard Boyle, the “Great Earl of Corke”. This year the Summer School will involve a historical tour of Youghal paying particular emphasis on the works of Richard Boyle including the Collegiate Gardens and the Boyle Tomb in St Mary's Collegiate Church. The school is a carefully designed with talks, walks and social events with plenty of time for conversation. A highlight this year will be the soirée in the Jacobean Gardens at Lismore Castle (laid out by Robert Boyle’s father the “Great Earl of Corke”) with 17th century music and 21st century buffet and costumed re-enactments of Robert Boyle’s work. There will be a coach transfer for the short distance between Youghal and Lismore for participants. School chairman Eoin Gill, a director of Calmast, the STEM outreach centre at Waterford Institute of Technology emphasised that while the school is about science it is not just for scientists. “In this world of fake news and alternative facts, it is science that gives us a reliable way of addressing reality. We are delighted to bring leading communicators to the beautiful Blackwater Valley to explore the scientific heritage of Youghal and Lismore, and to discuss the place of science in our culture. The summer school arena is an ideal way to bring these important issues to the fore, where the public can engage with scientists, historians, and commentators and enjoy social interaction”. A desk for writers overlooks the Dissour River, and the library holds a piano for musicians. The large rustic stone walled dining room doubles as a space for meetings. The adjacent Glenblower Wood is the perfect spot for long walks, and the character filled house invites reflection and inspires creativity. Built in 1767 by the Green Davis family, the building later became an RIC barrack before being burned out by the IRA in 1920. It then had a new life as a sawmill, and later as a guesthouse. 100% of proceeds raised throughout the weekend will go towards the restoration of Cloyne’s incredible example of an early Medieval Irish Round Tower. Irish Round Towers (Irish: Cloigtheach (singular), Cloigthithe (plural) – literally ‘Bell House’) are early medieval stone towers of a type found mainly in Ireland, with two in Scoltand and one on the Isle of Man. Though there is no certain agreement as to their purpose, it is thought that they may have been bell towers to warn of invasion, or places of refuge and safety, or both. Cloyne’s Round Tower is a particularly extraordinary example of this ancient masonry and such an important part of local and national history, the Cloyne Round Tower Restoration Committee are aiming to first secure and preserve the tower but hopeful it could also be restored well enough that it could become an important must see attraction for historians, history enthusiasts and Failte Ireland’s Ireland’s Ancient East visitors too and a valued tourism asset to benefit the whole of East Cork. Please follow @CloyneRoundTowerRestorationCommittee via FB for updates – there is a COMPETITION running now to WIN tickets to Saturday night. The weekend promises great entertainment in support of a historically significant project that will bring benefit not only to the Cloyne community, but East Cork in general. All events are taking place at Cloyne Cathedral. For more information please contact Tommy Hartnett ((086) 238 6390 or Brian Harty ( 087) 665 2667 at the Cloyne Round Tower Restoration Committee.

This seminar is part of a series of events that explores the notion of a making culture. In a world where people increasing seek connections to the objects they surround themselves with, and where there is access to global design and new technologies, we examine our past and debate our future as we mark our place in time with the objects we create and live with. Objects that enhance the way we live but are also an expression of who we are. Some of the big names include: Humberto Campana (Brazil); John Makepeace (UK); Gareth Neal (UK); O’Donnell + Twomey (Ireland); Chris Lefteri (London); Gunter Schnell, Jorg J. Berchtold and Joe Hogan. Date/Time: Thursday 07th December 2017 at 20:00 Event: Illustrated Talk - The Siege of Cork 1690 Location: Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál (Blarney Secondary School), Blarney, Co. Cork Additional Information: Blarney & District Historical Society presents an illustrated lecture titled :The Siege of Cork 1690’ Guest Speaker: Mr. John Mulcahy of Blarney and District Historical Society. After the Battle of the Boyne, William of Orange dispatched a force under John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (then 1st Earl) who reached Cork by sea on 21 September 1690. His English forces were 5,000 strong and he also had at his disposal a fleet which blockaded the port of Cork. His forces took the forts which commanded the hills around Cork and commenced a bombardment of the city to begin a siege which lasted less than a week. When a breach was opened in the city walls, the town’s garrison opened surrender negotiations but Marlborough refused the request. A few days later, the Williamites mounted an assault of the breach. This time the garrison surrendered and became prisoners. Marlborough accepted the surrender but his troops sacked and looted the city, did a great deal of damage and abused the Catholic inhabitants. Many civilians were killed before order was restored. John Mulcahy brings to life the high and low points of this famous siege which eventually led to the ‘Flight of the Wild Geese’, a massive emigration of soldiers and their generals to various continental armies in 1691. Date/Time: Monday 18th December 2017 at 14:30 Event: Launch of publications - Heritage Castles of County Cork and A Design Guide to the Shopfronts of County Cork Location: County Library Building Exhibition Room, County Hall Campus, Carrigrohane Road, Cork Additional Information: Heritage Castles of County Cork, the latest publication in the nationally recognised Heritage of County Cork Publication Series, supported by the Heritage Council – has just been completed and will hit the bookshops in the next few weeks with the launch of the publication taking place in the County Library Exhibition room on Monday 18th December at 14:30. Castles are a very strong part of County Cork’s heritage, and not surprisingly so, when we learn that there were 346 recorded castles recorded in the County. Of these 184 remain identifiable in the field and a further 162 are known from early maps or other documentary sources, but have not survived. The publication gives an overview of the wide range of castle types that are to be found in the County, also detailing, how castles would have functioned in society, the family names synonymous with the main castles, what life was like in County Cork during medieval times and why indeed castles eventually went into decline towards the end of the 17th century. The book is arranged in chronological order, starting with the castles of the Anglo-Normans (including a brief look at earthwork castles), then moving on to the later medieval tower houses, then the fortified houses of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Typical architectural and archaeological features are also presented to give a reader a great insight into castle construction and development and some fascinating featured examples from across the County are also provided, the majority of which can be visited today, free of charge. One of the main strengths of the book, and indeed of the Heritage of County Cork Series as a whole, is the fantastic involvement of community groups, organisations and individuals, by recommending numerous castles for inclusion and providing wonderful photographs, accounts and local tales. As a result, the publication contains a wealth of information and is expertly written with thanks to Eamonn Cotter – another proud publication by Cork County Council’s Heritage Unit and hopefully another publication that will be well received by people in the County of Cork and further afield. The book will shortly be available in bookshops throughout the County and online with thanks to the Skibbereen Heritage Centre - www.skibbheritage.com/shop. Cork County Council’s Heritage Unit has also recently brought out a Design Guide for the Historic Setting of the Shopfronts of County Cork with thanks to County Architectural Conservation Officer Mona Hallinan and Fourem Conservation. This will also be launched at the same time and place as Heritage Castles of County Cork on Monday 18th December. The Guide aims to identify the significance of the historic shopfronts of the County and the benefit of establishing the distinctive character of historic examples to the wider community and economic interests. Recommendations are made for repair and reinstatement of shopfronts in the history setting and it is a most enjoyable and insightful design guide that will undoubtedly have a number of benefits. Copies of the design guide will also be available at the launch - all welcome.
