Whether as lead singer and songwriter with The Guess Who or on his own, Cummings has amassed more hit records than just about any other Canadian performer in history. His numerous hits include “Stand Tall”, “I’m Scared”, “Timeless Love”, “Break It To Them Gently” and “I Will Play A Rhapsody”. He has received several Juno Awards including “Most Promising Male Singer” in 1977 and “Best Male Singer” that same year as well as in 1980. Cummings has also ventured into acting having starred in the 1982 feature film, Melanie which co-starred Don Johnson, Glynnis O’Connor and Paul Sorvino. Although Cummings now resides in Sherman Oaks, California, he still retains ties in Winnipeg where a theatre and a community centre have been named after him and he has been invested in the Order of Manitoba. He was also inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. His most recent album, Above The Ground was released in 2008 and was recorded with the help of his touring band, The Carpet Frogs. In 2009, he was named an officer of the Order of Canada by Governor General Michaëlle Jean. Cummings, who was born in Winnipeg, spent ten years with the band where he wrote and with Randy Bachman, he co-wrote most of the band’s biggest hits including “These Eyes”, “Laughing” and “American Woman”. After leaving for a solo career, he released a self-titled album in 1976. The single, "Stand Tall" was an international hit reaching #2 on The Billboard Hot 100 and selling over a million copies. The album along with its follow-up the next year, My Own Way To Rock both reached Double Platinum. His third solo album, Dream Of A Child became the first Canadian album to achieve Triple Platinum. His numerous hits include “My Own Way To Rock”, “Break It To Them Gently” and “I Will Play A Rhapsody”. He has received several Juno Awards including “Most Promising Male Singer” in 1977 and “Best Male Singer” that same year as well as in 1980. Cyrus noted: Mark Doble’s authoritative and comprehensive essay “Burton Through The Boot- legs” has the following to say about this particular recording: “The Live At The Ambassador Theatre bootleg may in fact be the finest bootleg of the Guess Who in existence. Recorded from a stereo FM Broadcast, the recording includes 19 songs, all of the hits as well as some notable gems such as an impromptu rendition of Bobby Darin’s “Artificial Flowers” by Burton while Bill’s bass amp was being repaired. (One wonders if it was opportunities like this that provided Burt with the idea of performing in his UP CLOSE AND ALONE format of the mid-1990s.) The performances on this recording are outstanding. Of particular note are the versions of “Straighten Out”, “Self Pity” and “Orly”, where Burton lets loose as only Burton can. At the conclusion of the broadcast, the announcer played back a short a cappella excerpt of the “Leave It To Beaver” television theme sung by Burton and the boys in the studio the previous day. Overall, the sound quality of this bootleg is spectacular. If there is a “Must Have” in the collection of Guess Who bootlegs, this is it! This show was also one of the last concerts the Guess Who would play with Kurt Winter and Donnie McDougall in the lineup.
