ACADEMIC SESSION-2020-2021 SOCIAL STUDIES CLASS-III TOPIC -THE FESTIVALS WE CELEBRATE We celebrate National festivals to remember some important events. Day RepublicLi Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti are the three national festivals that we celebrate. Republic Day We celebrate Republic Day on 26th January. The President hoists the national flag at Rajpath, New Delhi. This is followed by a grand parade. The Armed forces, police, folk dancers and school children take part in the parade. Independence Day We celebrate Independence Day on 15th August 1947. India became independent on this day.The Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi. On this day we remember those who fought for the freedom of our country. Gandhi Jayanti We celebrate Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October . It is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi . A prayer meet is held at Raj Ghat ,the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi. Similar meetings are held all over the country. RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS Indians celebrate many religious festivals. Let us read about a few: HOLI DUSSEHRA DIWALI EID GURUPURAB CHRISTMAS HOLI Holi is a festival of colours. It is celebrated in March. People play with coloured powder , called gulal and splash coloured water on one another. DUSSEHRA Dussehra also called Vijaya Dashami celebrates victory of good over evil. Ram Lila is performed during Dussehra. DIWALI Diwali or Deepawali means a row of lights.It is the festival of lights. It is celebrated in the month of October or November. People decorate their houses with candles , diyas and lights. People also make rangoli at the entrance of their houses. GURUPURAB Gurupurab is celebrated to honour and remember the ten Sikh gurus. Prayers and langars are held in Gurudwaras on this day. People also take out processions on this day. EID Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Zuha are two main Eids that people celebrate. After praying in mosque people wish each other Eid-Mubarak. Sewain, a sweet dish is served on Eid-ul-fitr. CHRISTMAS People celebrate Christmas on 25th of December.
