Muslim et al. Iraqi Journal of Science, 2019, Vol. 60, No. 4, pp: 803-818 DOI: 10.24996/ijs.2019.60.4.14 ISSN: 0067-2904 Environmental Assessment of heavy metals Concentration and Distribution in Surface Soils of Wasit Governorate/ Iraq Ruaa Issa Muslim*1, Murtadha J. Issa2, Basim Shaker AL-Obaidi3 1Department of Chemistry, College of Science, University of Wasit, Wasit, Iraq 2Department of Geology, College of Science, University of Baghdad, Baghdad, Iraq 3Department of Soil and Water Science, College of Agriculture. University of Tikrit, Tikrit, Iraq Abstract Wasit Governorate is characterized by industrials activities such as groups of asphalts and bricks factories, oil fields and thermal power plant, in addition to the agricultural activity that is widely separated, which leads to pollution of the surface soils with heavy metals. The main objective in this research is to assess heavy metals pollution and understand the distribution in the surface soils in the studied area. Twenty two surface soils samples were collected from 6 districts and 4 subdistricts within Wasit Governorate during April 2017. The results obtained showed that grain size analyzes are classified as sandy mud (sand 9.5%, silt 50.8 % and clays 39.8%). In the term of geochemical parameters, high level of soil salinity in Wasit Governorate was in Badrah station (8%). Organic matter records 3.7% as a relative maximum concentration in industrial soils at 7.2 pH. Heavy metals Mo, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn, As, Cd,V, Cr, Br, Ta, Zr, Ba and Sr were investigated in the soils samples in Wasit Governorate. -

All Rights Reserved. ____________________________ The Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies is an independent research institute and think tank for the study of history and social sciences, with particular emphasis on the applied social sciences. The Center’s paramount concern is the advancement of Arab societies and states, their cooperation with one another and issues concerning the Arab nation in general. To that end, it seeks to examine and diagnose the situation in the Arab world - states and communities- to analyze social, economic and cultural policies and to provide political analysis, from an Arab perspective. The Center publishes in both Arabic and English in order to make its work accessible to both Arab and non-Arab researchers. Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies PO Box 10277 Street No. 826, Zone 66 Doha, Qatar Tel.: +974 44199777 | Fax: +974 44831651 www.dohainstitute.org Abstract This paper seeks to examine Iraq’s fertility trends and the changes in fertility levels brought about in the last decades, using the Demographic Transition Theory as the basis of its analysis and conclusion. To achieve this, the study examines how the social, economic, and political changes taking place in Iraq – the affliction of war and internal turmoil – inevitably influence fertility behaviors, and thus development. The paper examines the geographical distribution of fertility through a comparison of fertility rates in the rural and urban areas, and across the governorates of Iraq. -
IOM Displacement Assessment and Statistics 1 April 2009
IOM EMERGENCY NEEDS ASSESSMENTS POST FEBRUARY 2006 DISPLACEMENT IN IRAQ 1 APRIL 2009 MONTHLY REPORT Following the February 2006 bombing of the Samarra Al-Askari Mosque, escalating sectarian violence in Iraq caused massive displacement, both internal and to locations abroad. In coordination with the Iraqi government’s Ministry of Displacement and Migration (MoDM), IOM continues to assess Iraqi displacement through a network of partners and monitors on the ground. Most displacement over the past five years (since 2003) occurred in 2006 and has since slowed. However, displacement continues to occur in some locations and the humanitarian situation of those already displaced is worsening. Some Iraqis are returning, but their conditions in places of return are extremely difficult. The estimated number of displaced since February 2006 is more than 1.6 million individuals1. SUMMARY OF CURRENT IRAQI DISPLACEMENT AND RETURN: Daily life for both IDP and returnee families in Iraq remains extremely difficult due to the lack of food, shelter, and basic services. Security is improving in many parts of Iraq, but is still uncertain. Drought is also a major concern, growing as the warm weather continues. Return As of the end of March, IOM displacement monitors had identified 49,603 returnee families in Iraq. While IDP families continue to return to their places of origin in many places throughout the country, upon arrival they face destroyed homes, lack of basic services, and few employment opportunities with which to support their families. While the Government of Iraq (GoI) and other national and international organizations are working to assist returnee families and ensure sustainability of returns, returnees are still in need of shelter and income generation assistance along with reconstruction of basic infrastructure and services. -
Health and Welfare in Iraq After the Gulf Crisis an in -Depth Assessment
HEALTH AND WELFARE IN IRAQ AFTER THE GULF CRISIS AN IN-DEPTH ASSESSMENT International Study Team October 1991 HEALTH AND WELFARE IN IRAQ AFTER THE GULF CRISIS AN IN -DEPTH ASSESSMENT From August 23 to September 5, the International Study Team on the Gulf Crisis comprehensively surveyed the impact of the Gulf Crisis on the health and welfare of the Iraqi population. The Team consisted of eighty-seven researchers drawn from a wide variety of disciplines, including agriculture, electrical engineering, environmental sciences, medicine, economics, child psychology, sociology, and public health. Team members visited Iraq’s thirty largest cities in all eighteen Governorates, including rural areas in every part of the country. The mission was accomplished without Iraqi government interference or supervision. Principal funding was supplied by UNICEF, the MacArthur Foundation, the John Merck Fund, and Oxfam- UK. The study team has prepared separate in-depth reports on the Gulf Crisis and its impact on Iraqi civilians focused on the following subjects: 1. Child Mortality and Nutrition Survey 2. Health Facilities Survey 3. Electrical Facilities Survey 4. Water and Wastewater Systems Survey 5. Environmental and Agricultural Survey 6. Income and Economic Survey 7. Child Psychology Survey 8. Women Survey This statement summarizes the principal findings of the research. Individual project reports, representing the findings and views of individual authors, are available for more detailed information. The economic and social disruption and destruction caused by the Gulf Crisis has had a direct impact on the health conditions of the children in Iraq. Iraq desperately needs not only food and medicine, but also spare parts to repair basic infrastructure in electrical power generation, water purification, and sewage treatment. -
