As The Hollywood Reporter [7] previously reported [2], Remini had taken action after becoming concerned about the wellbeing of Shelly Miscavige, wife of controversial Scientology leader David Miscavige. PHOTOS: 7 Stars Who Quit Scientology [8] The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed on Friday that the case had been closed and the missing persons report was "ruled as unfounded." According to writer Tony Ortega's website, The Underground Bunker [9], which focuses on the inner workings of the secretive organization, Shelly Miscavige has not been publicly sighted in six years. According to Ortega, Shelly Miscavige allegedly was transferred from Scientology's headquarters near Hemet, Calif., to a secret compound near Lake Arrowhead in late 2005 or early 2006. The compound, known as the Church of Spiritual Technology, reportedly houses about a dozen Scientologists who are said to be completely cut off from the outside world. Miscavige and his attorneys have not publicly confirmed Shelly's whereabouts. According to Ortega's report, Remini questions whether Shelly has freedom of movement or is being "punished for her own shortcomings." STORY: Paul Haggis Pens Open Letter Praising Leah Remini's 'Brave' Break With Scientology [4] Scientology officials have strenuously denied that Shelly Miscavige is missing, and in 2012, Shelly Miscavige's attorneys told Us Weekly that "any reports that she is missing are false. … Mrs. Miscavige has been working nonstop in the Church, as she always has." News of Remini's departure from Scientology broke July 8, with many reports stating that the 43year old had come to question the treatment of church members and the leadership of Miscavige. Her break with the organization also involved the touchy issue of Shelly Miscavige's whereabouts, a subject that has prompted occasionally fevered speculation among Scientology watchers. According to Ortega's original account [10], Remini's disillusionment with Scientology began at the 2006 wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in Italy when she asked why Shelly Miscavige was not in attendance. When Remini questioned why Shelly had not accompanied her husband to the nuptials (David Miscavige served as Cruise's best man), thenchurch spokesman Tommy Davis, son of actress Anne Archer, reportedly told Remini, "You don't fing rank to ask about Shelly." Remini later was behind an internal report sent to senior Scientology officials concerning the events at the wedding, alleging questionable behavior between Miscavige and his female assistant, Laurisse "Lou" Stuckenbrock, according to two sources who spoke to THR and asked not to be identified because they fear retaliation from Scientology. Remini's sisterNicole ReminiWiskow told Ortega [11] that her sister phoned a longtime friend in Scientology from Italy, and the friend wrote the report about Miscavige based on what Leah told her she witnessed at the wedding. While members reporting on one another is frequent and encouraged in the church, exmembers say it is highly unusual to criticize Miscavige. www.hollywoodreporter.com/print/602860 2/3 8/8/13 LAPD Rules Shelly Miscavige Missing Persons Report 'Unfounded' Earlier this month, reports surfaced that Remini was planning a tellall memoir [3]that would include "my experiences, everything that's taboo to talk about." ISSN: 2392-3113 Rhetoric in religion Retoryka w religii 3/2017 EDITOR: ANNA BENDRAT MARK J. PORROVECCHIO OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY [email protected] The Repetitive Rhetoric of Miscavige’s Battle: A Preliminary Look at the Church of Scientology Powtarzalność retoryki Davida Miscavige’a. Wstępne spojrzenie na Kościół Scjentologiczny Abstract The Church of Scientology is currently experiencing a rash of negative publicity regarding its belief- system, organizational structure, and practices. Amidst this controversy, Ecclesiastical Leader David Miscavige has continued to make speeches celebrating the church. But he has remained notably silent regarding the challenges facing his church. This short essay aims to: (a) provide an introduction to the church, (b) examine the rhetoric of Miscavige in light of the church’s practices, and (c) offer up some initial suggestions regarding how the two can, and do, relate to each other. The tentative conclusions drawn suggest that, at best, Miscavige is providing his followers with a positive vision of the church; at worst, his rhetoric threatens to engender more criticism and further isolate the church.

  • Bohemian Rhapsody
8 Bohemian Rhapsody aul Haggis and Deborah Rennard married in 1997, soon after Paul’s divorce from Diane became nal. Paul was still seeking joint custody of his three daughters. Without Pconsulting him, Diane had taken Lauren and Katy out of the Delphi Academy, apparently intending to enroll them in public school. Paul and Diane were ordered by the court to undergo psychiatric evaluation, a procedure that Scientology abhors. In December 1998, the court surprised everyone by awarding Paul full custody of his daughters. According to court records, the ruling followed the discovery that the girls were not enrolled in school at all. The girls were stunned. They had watched the hostilities through Diane’s eyes. No one had prepared them for the possibility that they might be taken from her—until then, it had been the three girls and their mother against the world. The girls thought the decision was unbalanced and unfairly inuenced by the fact that their father had more money. Alissa vowed she would never speak to him again. Haggis was also caught short by the court’s decision. In addition to the year-old son, James, he had with Deborah, he suddenly had two teenage daughters on his hands as well. (Alissa was twenty-one at the time, and lived on her own.) The girls felt uprooted and they missed the emotional support of their mother. They didn’t resent Deborah; actually, they appreciated her advocacy and the way she balanced out Paul. Still, it was a difficult adjustment for everyone. Paul put the girls in a private school, but that lasted only six months.

  • Narconon, Scientology, and the Battle for Legitimacy
MARBURG JOURNAL OF RELIGION, Vol. 19, No. 1 (2017) 1 Narconon, Scientology, and the Battle for Legitimacy Stephen A. Kent Abstract This article provides an historical description and analysis of Scientology’s controversial drug treatment program, Narconon. Following scholarship by sociologist Terra Manca on Scientology’s pseudo-medicine, I argue that Scientology initially wavered about acknowledging its program to be part of its ‘religion,’ but eventually dropped this claim as it attempted to get Narconon programs and teachings established in communities. I show, however, the intimate association between Scientology and Narconon courses, and present some of the evidence that the program lacks scientific validity - especially its Purification Rundown. I. INTRODUCTION Developed by Scientology and overseen by one of its front groups called the Association for Better Living and Education (ABLE), 1 Narconon represents itself as a drug treatment program that “has been saving lives since 1966.” 2 Its treatment involves regimes of running, vitamin consumption, saunas, and courses borrowed almost directly from Scientology, based upon the instructions of Scientology’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986). According to a 2017 Narconon Worldwide website that listed its “drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers,” thirty-one programs operated globally, scattered throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe, Russia, the Ukraine, Turkey, Nepal, and Australia. 3 The website listed eight of those programs as operating in America, and in November 2016, the online Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the United States Department of Health and Human Services provided contact information for two Narconon programs.
