It is an extraordinary story of terrible things done to a woman who did not deserve them and shines a light into the darkest corner of the history of the Church of Scientology. Tony has done a wonderful job with the narrative — the story reads like a thriller. Scientology never changes its policies and practices no matter what they say. They remain a paranoid, vindictive cult that has reduced itself into a money making machine. Major kudos to the author Tony Ortega. This was amazing. Somebody better be trying to turn this into a movie. This could be huge! Although people would probably find the plot too unbelievable. Nov 20, Victor Smith rated it it was amazing. A fascinating read by an excellent writer--but so much more. Deserves all the plaudits already in these reviews. If anything, he takes something off the punches that this organization, which has cynically posed as a church and gotten away with murder literally, rightly deserves. At considerable personal risk, Tony has done more than his part to warn the public of the danger Scientology poses to anyone who falls into their clutches. They will promise anything to get to your wallet and spare no treachery to keep you captive once they have you. Thanks to Tony and many other intrepid writers and media folks, we have all been warned. Thank you from one who tried it unawares and paid a steep price. Scientology is like dramatic high school mean girls who threaten to hurt themselves if they don't get their way. Except they'll make it look like YOU did it and then everyone will hate you - your parents and your friends and your life will be OVER! And they get people to pretend to be your friends while learning all your secrets so they can tell them to the world while stealing your clothes and your paper. And 3. And threatening to mail a bomb to Henry Kissinger and then saying it was you! Typical bratty stuff! The writing left something to be desired, though. Some pages are almost entirely names, dates and dry facts with very little narrative structure. Elsewhere it's completely readable which made these fact sheets that much harder to slog through. Worth it overall though, there was so much I didn't know. Charles Manson was big into Scientology for awhile lolol. They should be putting all their energy and capacity for evildoing into headhunting and recruiting, they are masters. Aug 27, Sophie rated it really liked it. The Unbreakable Miss Lovely is a fascinating and thrilling read. The book is well-written, thoroughly researched, and a detailed account of Paulette Cooper's harrowing ordeal. Paulette is a strong, likeable woman although gullible and vulnerable at times; she falls for tricks so obvious you feel exasperated yet forever sympathetic of her situation. An absolutely thrilling book whether you know of the Church of Scientology or nothing at all. Incredibly depressing, even though things turned out okay for Paulette in the end. Like so many others before and after her, Paulette Cooper investigated the many, many credible claims of abuse and craziness inside the Church of Scientology, and had her life almost destroyed for her trouble. Though I'd read some The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology Tried to Destroy Paulette Cooper of the types of harassment and litigation Scientology had visited on its most inconvenient critics before, the play-by-play breakdown of just how Scientology sought to discredi Incredibly depressing, even though things turned out okay for Paulette in the end. Though I'd read some overviews of the types of harassment and litigation Scientology had visited on its most inconvenient critics before, the play- by-play breakdown of just how Scientology sought to discredit Paulette and even convict her of a bomb threat against Kissinger! The old school Guardian's Office wasn't messing around. I find Scientology endlessly interesting in ways that can unfortunately sometimes ignore the human cost of Hubbard's greed and ambition, and this book was an excellent reminder of the lives that were callously trampled because he could not abide people taking a look inside without the safety line of their auditing-provided blackmail. The day when it's razed to the ground and the earth salted can't come soon enough, so we can interact with it only in history books. Paulette Cooper was a fascinating, badass, iron-willed opponent to Scientology, and helped break the back of their ambitions, but the best way to honor her, it seems, is to ensure that we never need to create cases like hers again. The Unbreakable Miss Lovely was a most interesting book. I could hardly put it down. The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology Tried to Destroy Paulette Cooper knew very little about the Church of Scientology apart from the quote by L. Ron Hubbard to his then wife Polly, "You don't get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, you start a religion. It is almost unbelievable the lengths that they went to bring down Paulette The Unbreakable Miss Lovely was a most interesting book. It is almost unbelievable the lengths The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology Tried to Destroy Paulette Cooper they went to bring down Paulette Cooper, almost to the point of suicide. I was glad to read that she found happiness and was able to live without the threat of the Scientologist pursuing her. I am giving this book 5 stars The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology Tried to Destroy Paulette Cooper would be very interested in reading other works by Tony Ortega Apr 06, Grant Howard rated it it was amazing. Essential reading if you take an interest in Scientology's shady activities. For his first book he has chosen two of the organization's darkest chapters; Their more than a decade long attack on writer Paulette Cooper and "Operation Snow White" a shockingly bold and far-reaching program of stealing documents from US government offices. I'd still say the most important book to read on this subject is Russe Essential reading if you take an interest in Scientology's shady activities. I'd still say the most important book to read on this subject is Russell Miller's "Bare Faced Messiah". If you enjoy this book have a look on Youtube for Tony Ortega's many appearances on news channel "The Lip" discussing scientology news. Wonderful account of what Scientology got away with This books account of Scientology's relentless persuit of one journalist who dared to expose their practices is such an eye opener. It made me angry that even after everything they did including faking evidence that she sent the "church" of scientology a bomb threat and constantly providing fake "friends" to spy on her, including one who moved in with her, she was never really compensated for what was done to her. A great read and recommended fo Wonderful account of what Scientology got away with This books account of Scientology's relentless persuit of one journalist who dared to expose their practices is such an eye opener. A great read and recommended for anyone with an interest in this awful organisation. Good read Well written, thorough and clearly well researched, book about one of the many targets of the notorious Church of Scientology and their harassment and ruination. It is unbelievable what one person is able to endure, to survive and Paulette Cooper had more than her share of torment at the hands of Scientology. Up The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology Tried to Destroy Paulette Cooper fairly recently the only thing I could've told you about Scientology was that a bunch of celebrities belong to it. Thanks to celebrities like Tom Cruise the truth about Scientology is coming out. Uh-oh, it looks like your Internet Explorer is out of date.

If you think you have problems with Scientology in England, you should see what's happening in the States. Here, they pass out their leaflets on the street corners of some of the most pukka neighbourhoods, urging innocent bystanders to try out Scientology. Those who have accepted the invitation have found themselves in one of their many dingy headquarters, listening to a dull lecture on Scientology, followed by a film of equal merit on its leader, L. Ron Hubbard. Those who didn't walk out then may have submitted to the American Personality Test (in England, it's the Oxford Capacity Analysis), probably not realising that the B.Scn, D.Scn, DD, and BA degrees of the girl who wrote the test stood for Bachelor of Scientology, Doctor of Scientology, and Doctor of Divinity in the "Church" of Scientology only.

Scientology: Losing The Religion Previously published at: http:/jove.prohosting.com/~xenuart/losingthereligion.htm and retrieved from the wayback machine to preserve for future generations. Minor spelling & formatting corrections applied, and hyperlinks repaired & added. Part One Over the years, I have met a number of people, people who have looked into the seemingly implausible things being taught by the Church of Scientology, the huge sums of money they charge, people who cannot possibly comprehend how intelligent people can get caught up into it. To best understand this, one must understand that there are different types of people on this earth. If you are such a person wondering these things, then to understand this you will have to, for a moment, jump into the skin of someone who is different than you, cut from a different cloth than you, and, such a cloth, perhaps, as that I was cut from during those years that I was swept up by the church. Once upon a time, during the year 1966, I was a young boy of fifteen, my mother was away on business, and so I was staying with two of her friends, friends who happened to be Scientologists. "What is OT?” I asked Wanda, curious about the cryptic acronym I was seeing everywhere in church literature laying around the house. She had already given me the basics of Scientology and Dianetics, but the banal descriptions they offered me didn't catch my attention much, that is, until she answered this question. "An OT is someone who, if they wanted a hamburger, could make one appear out of thin air, like magic", Wanda replied, sincerely.

The compound, known as the Church of Spiritual Technology, reportedly houses about a dozen Scientologists who are said to be completely cut off from the outside world.

This paper provides an overview of the legal system of the religion of Scientology. To the members of the religion, this legal system supersedes and fully displaces the mainstream legal system. Scientology’s legal system is self-contained and independent, with rules, enforcement mechanisms, and correctional facilities. The overview provided in this paper will be useful to courts and to further research in the nascent yet vital field of Scientological legal research. The contents are as follows: INTRODUCTION; I. SOURCING; II. WITHIN AND WITHOUT; III. RULES; IV. ENFORCEMENT MECHANISMS; V. CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES; CONCLUSION. MARBURG JOURNAL OF RELIGION, Vol. 21, No. 1 (2019) 2 INTRODUCTION This paper provides a broad overview of the legal system of the religion of Scientology.1 No legal scholar has yet provided such an overview. This fact is somewhat perplexing, as the religion was founded some seventy years ago.2 More broadly, the literature on Scientology is far sparser than that on other recently founded religions such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints3 (two religions which count far more adherents than 1 I am grateful to Prof. Mark Antaki, Alec Sader and Olivier Lirette for their thoughtful comments on earlier drafts. This means that the non-recognition policy being followed by prison service is reasonable .and secure. It has been our long-standing policy to withhold recognition of scientology as a religion. However, in order to meet the needs of individual prisoners, the Prison Service allows any prisoner registered as a Scientologist to have access to a representative of the Church of Scientology if he wishes to receive its ministry. This is the approach which was followed in the case of Mr Heaton. The Home Office considers that its policy respects the rights of Mr Heaton under the ECHR and is reasonable in view of concerns of which the department is aware about some of the practices of the Church.

Date of Birth/Death: March 13, 1911/January 24, 1986 4. Birth Place: Tilden, Nebraska 5. Year Founded: 1954 6. Biography of Founder: According to texts published by the Church of Scientology and its web page pertaining primarily to its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, always referred to as L. Ron by Scientologists, experienced early in his life the many facets of the human mind. At the age of 12, he learned from Commander Joseph C. Thompson, who was the first military official to study under Sigmund Freud in Vienna, Austria, the theory of psychoanalysis. Hubbard was also influenced by his many world journeys to exotic locales, thus gaining an appreciation for Eastern philosophies rooted in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. His studies in mathematics, engineering, and nuclear physics at George Washington University generated a scientific background to his beliefs in the human mind, although his studies did not earn him a degree. As a naval officer during World War II, he suffered injuries that left him blind and crippled. During his recovery, he once again examined Freudian psychoanalytical theory and Eastern philosophies. He credits the eventual cure of his disabilities to his findings about the human mind during this time, findings that became the central elements of a religious doctrine he later called Dianetics.

  • Degrees of Truth: Sequoia University and Doctor L
$ The Journal of CESNUR $ Degrees of Truth: Sequoia University and Doctor L. Ron Hubbard, PhD, D. Scn, D.D. Ian C. Camacho Independent Scholar [email protected] ABSTRACT: The various conflicting claims about Sequoia University, from which L. Ron Hubbard received an honorary PhD, result from incomplete and faulty research by critics of Hubbard and Scientology. Although unaccredited, Sequoia University was not a degree mill. Sequoia neither operated from a post office box, nor solely from one man’s home. There were several departments, locations, ceremonies and courses with real coursework required to obtain various degrees, which even a California state inquiry confirmed upon its investigation into the school. Several successful and prominent graduates received degrees from Sequoia for their work, while others received honorary degrees. Hubbard neither founded nor acquired Sequoia University, nor did he buy or self-award his honorary PhD. In fact, Hubbard was reticent to become involved with Sequoia University and never reclaimed the honorary PhD once he formally renounced it. Sequoia University appeared well- intentioned from all accounts, and although unaccredited there was more to its background than previously realized. KEYWORDS: Dianetics, Joseph W. Hough, Forrest J. Ackerman, L. Ron Hubbard, L. Ron Hubbard’s Academic Degrees, Richard de Mille, Scientology, Sequoia University. Introduction Sequoia University is famous for awarding Dianetics and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard (1911–1986) an honorary Doctorate of Philosophy. As such, critics and scholars have depicted Sequoia as a diploma mill, including Hugh B.
