Boxing and Latin Beats Meet at Bronx Forum Boxing and Latin beats meet at Bronx forum The overlapping histories of boxing and Latin music in the Bronx will be on display at the Bronx Music Heritage Center Saturday. BY DENIS SLATTERY Thursday, September 18, 2014, 6:41 PM The overlapping histories of boxing and Latin music in the Bronx will be on display at the Bronx Music Heritage Center Saturday. The links between the sweet science and salsa will be explored at a free event, dubbed “TKOs and Timbales,” which will feature live boxing, movie screenings and a performance by Bronx Latin music legend Orlando Marin. Carlos Ortiz, 78, a two-time former lightweight world champion, will participate in a panel discussion about the glory days of the music scene, in the 1950s 1 Cover of the 1977 Willie Colon and Ruben Blades album Metiendo Mano shot at Bobby Gleason's boxing gym and 1960s. Ortiz owned the massive, mirrored dance hall known as the Tropicoro Club on Longwood Ave. The South Bronx staple was a favorite performance venue for Latin music stars such as Tito Puente and Willie Colon. “That was the first club I ever went to,” recalled Julio Pabon, a South Bronx activist and founder of latinosports.com. “There’s so much musical history in the Bronx, especially for Latinos.” Filmmaker Leon Gast will also be on hand for a screening of “When We Were Kings,” his award- winning documentary about the legendary 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle” between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. TKOs and Timbales: The Intersection of Boxing and Music, Bronx Music Heritage Center, Saturday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., 1303 Louis Nine Blvd. For more 2 An undated photo of boxer Carlos Ortiz dancing with a information, visit: www.whedco.org female fan. .

  • Lightweight Legends
Lightweight Legends Back when things were in Black and white and Boxing had only 8 weights classes, Lightweight was one of the toughest division’s to make a name for yourself fast forward to today things haven’t changed much. Lightweight still has some of the elite performers in the game. Granted things aren’t as hot at 135 as they have been in the past years. That could all change this weekend when Juan Manuel Marquez heads back to the more cosy confines of Lightweight after his sojourn to a Welterweight catchweight against Floyd Mayweather. His opponent this time at least seems mortal, a rematch with Juan Diaz. Last February Diaz’s youth, size and strength seemed as though they would help him gain the biggest win of his career to date. Slowly but surely Marquez refined and tuned his considerable skills, creating gaps in Diaz defence until landing two howitzer right hands that dropped Diaz before conclusively ending the argument with a devastating right uppercut. It was ultimately one of the top fights of 2009. Also on Saturday’s card will be Robert Guerrero & Joel Casamayor, though the fight is a few pounds above the Lightweight limit the winner will most likely look to fight the winner of the main event. Just a few pounds south at 130 Jorge Linares and Rocky Juarez duel in an intriguing fight in which the loser has no place to go. It’s not quite the Lightweight Lightening that took place last April when eight of the top Lightweights were scheduled to face off, though it never quite worked out.
