Cerithiform gastropods possess high-spired shells with small apertures, anterior canals or si- nuses, and usually one or more spiral rows of tubercles, spines or nodes. This shell morphology occurs mostly within the superfamily Cerithioidea. Several morphologic characters of cerithiform shells are adap- tive within five broad functional areas: (1) defence from shell-peeling predators (external sculpture, pre- adult internal barriers, preadult varices, adult aperture) (2) burrowing and infaunal life (burrowing sculp- tures, bent and elongated inhalant adult siphon, plough-like adult outer lip, flattened dorsal region of last whorl), (3) clamping of the aperture onto a solid substrate (broad tangential adult aperture), (4) stabilisa- tion of the shell when epifaunal (broad adult outer lip and at least three types of swellings located on the left ventrolateral side of the last whorl in the adult stage), and (5) righting after accidental overturning (pro- jecting dorsal tubercles or varix on the last or penultimate whorl, in one instance accompanied by hollow ventral tubercles that are removed by abrasion against the substrate in the adult stage). Most of these char- acters are made feasible by determinate growth and a countdown ontogenetic programme. -

SuBBA RAO Zoological Survey of India, Calcutta ABSTRACT This paper is the concluding part on the Strombidae of Indian Soas and the first comprehensive report on tlie species of this region. Fourteen species belonging to four genera namely, Lambis, Tibia, Terebellum and Rimella are recorded from the Indian Ocean. Two species of Rimella are reported here for the first time from Indian Seas. INTRODUCTION THE FAMILY STROMBIDAE is represented by five genera namely, Strombus, Lambis, Terebellum, Tibia and Rimella in the Indian Seas. The collections in the Zoological Survey of India are well represented in having all the genera. The genus Strombus was dealt with in a previous paper (Subba Rao, 1971). The present paper deals with the remaining four genera namely, Lambis, Tibia, Terebellum and Rimella. The author is grateful to Dr. S. 989 ARTICLE Seasonal reproductive anatomy and sperm storage in pleurocerid gastropods (Cerithioidea: Pleuroceridae) Nathan V. Whelan and Ellen E. Strong Abstract: Life histories, including anatomy and behavior, are a critically understudied component of gastropod biology, especially for imperiled freshwater species of Pleuroceridae. This aspect of their biology provides important insights into understanding how evolution has shaped optimal reproductive success and is critical for informing management and conser- vation strategies. One particularly understudied facet is seasonal variation in reproductive form and function. For example, some have hypothesized that females store sperm over winter or longer, but no study has explored seasonal variation in accessory reproductive anatomy. We examined the gross anatomy and fine structure of female accessory reproductive structures (pallial oviduct, ovipositor) of four species in two genera (round rocksnail, Leptoxis ampla (Anthony, 1855); smooth hornsnail, Pleurocera prasinata (Conrad, 1834); skirted hornsnail, Pleurocera pyrenella (Conrad, 1834); silty hornsnail, Pleurocera canaliculata (Say, 1821)). Histological analyses show that despite lacking a seminal receptacle, females of these species are capable of storing orientated sperm in their spermatophore bursa. Additionally, we found that they undergo conspicuous seasonal atrophy of the pallial oviduct outside the reproductive season, and there is no evidence that they overwinter sperm. The reallocation of resources primarily to somatic functions outside of the egg-laying season is likely an adaptation that increases survival chances during winter months. Snail Distributions in Lake Erie: the Influence of Anoxia in the Southern Central Basin Nearshore Zone1

KRIEGER, Water Quality Laboratory, Heidelberg College, Tiffin, OH 44883 ABSTRACT. The distributions and abundances of gastropods collected in sediment grab samples in 1978 and 1979 in the southern nearshore zone of the central basin of Lake Erie were compared with earlier gastropod records from throughout the lake. Since the 1920s, 34 species in eight families have been reported for the lake proper. Sixteen species have been reported only once, 13 of them in three reports prior to 1950. All but three of the species collected by two or more authors prior to the mid-1950s have also been collected in the past decade. The most frequently reported species are Walvata trkarinata, Bithynia tentaculata, Elimia ( =Goniobasis) livescens, Physella "sp.", Amnkola limosa, Pleuroceraacuta and V. sincera. Only six of 19 studies reported species densities, and most did not record sample locations, depths or substrates. Thus, only a limited comparison of the gastropod fauna between studies was possible, with the exception of several well documented studies in the western basin up to the early 1960s. Of four introduced species in Lake Erie, only two were found in the present study, and these appear to have no influence on the present distributions of the native species. The absence of snails in the south- western part of the study area and at the mouths of the Cuyahoga and Black rivers appears to be the result of prolonged anoxia during one or more summers preceding the study. -

This study presents the first ever record of molluscan fauna from shapk beach of Jiwani. Amongst these fifty eight (58) species were found belonging to class gastropoda, twenty two (22) bivalves, one (1) scaphopod and one (1) polyplachopora comprised of thirty nine (39) families. Each collected samples was identified on species level as well as biometric data of certain species was calculated for both sites. Molluscan species similarity was also calculated between two sites. For gastropods it was remain 74 %, for bivalves 76 %, for Polyplacophora 100 % and for Scapophoda 0 %. Meanwhile total similarity of molluscan species between two sites was calculated 75 %. Notable identified species from Bandri and Shapak includes Oysters, Muricids, Babylonia shells, Trochids, Turbinids and shells belonging to Pinnidae, Arcidae, Veneridae families are of commercial significance which can be exploited for a variety of purposes like edible, ornamental, therapeutic, dye extraction, and in cement industry etc. -

ABSTRACT The anatomy of seven members of the Bittium group is described, clarifying the status of the genus-level taxa comprising it. Bittium reticulatum, the type species of Bittium Gray, is described in depth, thereby establishing criteria for comparisons with other taxa of Bitliinae. The type species of Stylidium Dell and LirobiWum Bartsch, and representatives of Bittiolum Cossmann and Cacozeliana Strand are examined and compared with Bittium, s.s. Results of anatomical studies and a phylogenetic analysis using the Hennig86 and CLADOS programs, with Cehtt)ium as an outgroup, establish monophyly for Bitliinae Cossmann and reveal six different genus-level taxa. A new genus, ittibittium, from the Indo-Pacific, is proposed. Synonymies of each genus- level taxon and representative species examined are presented. Brief accounts of the ecology and zoogeography of each taxon are given. Two taxa formerly attributed to the 6/ff/um-group are herein excluded from it and referred to Cerithium Bruguière. These are Cerithium zebrum Kiener, 1841, and Cerithium boeticum Pease, 1861. The subfamily Bittiinae Cossmann, 1906, is thought to comprise nine genera (four of which were not included in phylogenetic analyses) : Bittium Gray, 1847; Bittiolum Cossmann, 1906; Ittibittium gen. n., Stylidium Dalí, 1907; Lirobit- tium Bartsch, 1911 ; Cacozeliana Strand, 1928; Argyropeza Melvill & Standen, 1901 ; Varicopeza Gründel, 1976; Zebittium Finlay, 1927. The genus Cassiella Gofas, 1987, of uncertain place- ment, is included as a possible member of the group. -
