The announcement Was made just ahead of DreamHack Atlanta, a three-day gaming experience featuring esports competitions, live music, exhibitions and more. Because Atlanta is the No. 1 city for gaming environment and No. 5 city for gamers, the Atlanta Esports Alliance is being launched to drive neW opportunities for teams, tournaments, venues and esports service providers and partners in Atlanta. Atlanta is home to three franchised city-based esports teams: the Atlanta Reign (Overwatch), Hawks Talon (NBA 2K) and the Atlanta FaZe (Call of Duty). With 150 gaming studios throughout the state of Georgia, the region is also the headquarters of esports game developers Hi-Rez Studios and Blue Mammoth, global leader in customized gaming controllers Scuf Gaming and professional esports league ELEAGUE. “Our goal is to continue being forward thinking,” said Dan Corso, president of the Atlanta Sports Council. “As We look ahead to the next decade, esports is going to continue to dominate the sports industry, and it was important for us as an organization to cement Atlanta as the capital of esports and use this platform as yet another economic driver.” A division of the Metro Atlanta Chamber (MAC), ASC facilitates the growth and development of sports in metro Atlanta by serving as a recruiter for major regional, national and international sports events. -

DreamHack and ESL North America Enter Into Esports Partnership With U.S. Navy Deal Marks First Official U.S. Armed Forces Partner of DreamHack STOCKHOLM / LOS ANGELES – DreamHack and ESL North America, both part of the leading international entertainment group Modern Times Group MTG, today announced a joint partnership with America’s Navy. “The Navy is excited to partner with DreamHack and ESL as we enter the esports space,” said Rear Admiral Brendan R. McLane, Commander, U.S. Navy Recruiting Command. “Like the Navy, esports requires a variety of skills and roles, and a strong commitment to continual improvement. Our partnership will help align the U.S. Navy’s passion for competition with esports fans both onsite at DreamHack North American events and through unique online content on ESL channels.” As part of this partnership, the U.S. Navy has been designated an Official Festival Partner at DreamHack Anaheim on February 21-23 as well as DreamHack Dallas on May 22-24. "Who Watches The Watchmen" Steve Meretzky, Independent Dave Rohrl, Mobile Game Doctor Juan Gril, Independent Ian Schreiber, RIT Kenny Shea Dinkin, King Mission statement: to understand why players passively watch games … either as a pure spectator, or in their own gameplay during periods of low interaction or low agency … and to give gamemakers a blueprint for creating watchable games. What makes games watchable? YouTube influencers and Twitch streaming have become a major force affecting the game industry. Each year, tens of millions of players enjoy spectating the growing category of esports, while at the same time the growing phenomenon of player walkthroughs has many millions of players watching videos for game hints and help or pure entertainment. In addition to these purely passive experiences, there are important and widely adopted forms of gameplay that in many ways looks more like traditional experiences of watching rather than traditional experiences of playing. These include games where the player has little or no control of the game’s outcome (as in a slot machine or an on-rails linear narrative game) and games where the player only interacts with the game quite infrequently (as in idle games, anthill-type simulations, and map-based MMORTS games like Travian). We now live in an environment where games don’t just have to consider what it’s like to play them, but also what it’s like to watch them - even if the player gets to interact with them sometimes. Professional sports have been designed this way for many years (although we only get a new one of those that catches on once every several generations), but it’s a relatively new design consideration for today’s video game and board game designers. -

Constructing authentic esports spectatorship: An ethnography David Jian-Jia Cumming ORCID: 0000-0002-0121-476X Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy October 2020 School of Computing and Information Systems Melbourne School of Engineering The University of Melbourne Abstract Formally organised competitive video gaming, commonly known as esports, has seen a rapid rise in popularity over the past decade as a form of spectator entertainment. Thousands of fans pack grand stadia across the globe to watch their favourite esports teams and players compete for extravagant prize pools, while millions watch online remotely in their homes via livestreaming platforms like Twitch. Unlike conventional sports however, there is no inherent need for esports to take place in any particular physically-situated site like a stadium. The computerised nature of esports lends the practice a perceived placeless quality. No matter where an esports event is situated, be it in a stadium or networked across homes, the digital synthetic environments in which players’ avatars compete remain the same as objective constructs of code and graphical assets. If the perspective of watching esports is largely the same across different sites by virtue of its inherent mediation, then why is esports spectated beyond the comfort of the home? The aim of this thesis is to address this conundrum by exploring the experiences esports spectatorship in varying contexts. In particular, this thesis seeks to understand how experiences of esports spectatorship are influenced by and differ across various sites of spectatorship. This aim is achieved through an ethnographic methodology, where data is generated through embedded interactions and experiences with esports spectators at three distinct sites of esports spectatorship. -

Using Consumer Insights 18 FOREWORD A NEW PHASE FOR ESPORTS COMMENCES Esports is entering a new phase toward becoming a mature ESPORTS ENTERING A CRUCIAL PHASE TOWARDS MATURITY market. The coming two years will be crucial in how fast it grows into a multi-billion-dollar business. The key determining factors are the success of local leagues and the franchising approach, the implementation of regulations, the arrival of new game formats and competition, the uptake of content rights sales, team profitability, and the impact of industry convergence involving traditional media, entertainment, telecom, and sports companies. Depending on how these factors play out in the coming year or two, esports’ growth could accelerate and reach $2.4 billion in 2020 in an optimistic scenario, almost $1 billion higher than the base scenario of $1.5 billion. Europe has been one of the most important regions in the development of the esports industry. Some of the first organizations that made esports popular, especially in the West, originate from Europe. Most notable is ESL, arguably the world’s largest esports organization, which has its roots in Germany. The company has helped build and shape esports from small community events to record-breaking events, including the Intel Extreme Masters in Katowice and ESL One in Cologne.
