Back to the Future follows the amazing adventures of Marty McFly (Michael J Fox), a high-school student in the small Northern California town of Hill Valley. The fun begins when Marty’s friend and mentor, crazed scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), invents a time machine in the form of a nuclear-powered DeLorean. Marty accidentally finds himself transported back to the year 1955 where he is faced with the prospect of having no future, unless he can get his bumbling teenage father (Crispin Glover) and flirtatious mother (Lea Thompson) to fall in love while keeping town bully Biff Tannen (Thomas F.Wilson) away. And, of course, he must convince a young but still crazed Doc Brown to help him get back to the future. Back to the Future II continues with Doc Brown returning from the future. Doc Brown convinces Marty and girlfriend Jennifer (Elisabeth Shue) to travel with him into the future where Marty must ensure his future son does not participate in a crime that would lead to catastrophic consequences. They return to 1985 only to find Biff Tannen has managed to obtain money and power thus creating an alternate 1985. Marty and Doc Brown realise they must once again go back in time to 1955. In the conclusion to the trilogy, Marty receives a telegram in 1955 from Doc Brown who has been transported further back in time to 1885. Through research, Marty discovers that Doc Brown is murdered shortly after writing the telegram. Marty must decide, should he go back to 1885 and rescue Doc Brown or make his way safely back to 1985?     Classrooms of the Future Marty McFly and Dr Emmett Brown managed to do it. They transported themselves through time in the film Back to the Future and its sequels. In the second film, on October 26, 1985, Dr. Emmett Brown arrived in the DeLorean time machine and persuaded Marty McFly and his girlfriend, Jennifer Parker, to travel to the future with him and help their forthcoming children. They travelled thirty years ahead to October 26, 2015. The film was actually made in 1989, some 26 years before the futuristic date in the film. The screenwriters, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, attempted to predict the future. According to Zemeckis, the 2015 depicted in the film was not meant to be an accurate representation of the future. However, the film did correctly predict a number of technological and sociological changes that occurred by 2015, including: the rise of ubiquitous cameras; the use of unmanned flying drones for newsgathering; widescreen flat-panel television sets mounted on walls with multiple channel viewing; video chat systems; hands-free video games; talking hologram billboards; wearable technology; tablet computers with fingerprint scanners; and head-mounted displays. While the film, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd, made many fanciful predictions which we're still waiting for, it was surprisingly correct in some aspects. Here's what it got right and what it got wrong about the world we live in, in 2015: Right Fingerprint scanners Fingerprint recognition, like that used to pay for a taxi in the film, can be found on the latest iPhones and at US passport control. Fuelling cars on rubbish While you can't exactly scavenge through a wheelie-bin and force feed it through your car's petrol cap (as Doc does to the DeLorean), using waste as a fuel - in the form of biogas, is something we use in 2015. There's even a bus in Bristol that runs entirely on human and food waste. Hoverboard transportation The kind with wheels may be banned on British streets, but inventors in the US have managed to create a real hoverboard using powerful electromagnets and a metal course. The Hendo II, fronted by renowned skateboarder Tony Hawk will be launched on Wednesday. Hands-free games A young Elijah Wood and his pal denounce Marty for using a video game that needs a handset in the film, suggesting that by 2015 hands-free computer games would be mainstream.

No wonder it was a favorite of the US president at the time, Ronald Reagan: the film’s message is typical of 1980s Hollywood, espousing a good, happy American family and the preservation of social values based on that good !family.

Since then we have learned that it is one of the most common genetic disorders. One in every 3,000 babies is born with NF. Neurofibromatosis can affect any family. Imagine an unpredictable disease that causes tumors to form on your nerves, sometimes resulting in disfigurement, paralysis, deafness, blindness or cancer. In the wrong place even benign tumors can be fatal. Despite decades of research, there is still no cure for NF, and treatments are largely inadequate. But there is hope. The Neurofibromatosis Network is a national non-profit whose mission is to provide services to the NF community and to promote federal funding for NF research. My wife and I have made it our mission to raise awareness and support for those living with NF. That is where you come in.     4.2 On the Political Economy of the Contemporary (Superhero) Blockbuster Series BY FELIX BRINKER A decade and a half into cinema’s second century, Hollywood’s top-of-the- line products—the special effects-heavy, PG-13 (or less) rated, big-budget blockbuster movies that dominate the summer and holiday seasons— attest to the renewed centrality of serialization practices in contemporary film production. At the time of writing, all entries of 2014’s top ten of the highest-grossing films for the American domestic market are serial in one way or another: four are superhero movies (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro), three are entries in ongoing film series (Transformers: Age of Extinction, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, 22 Jump Street), one is a franchise reboot (Godzilla), one a live- action “reimagining” of an animated movie (Maleficent), and one a movie spin-off of an existing entertainment franchise (The Lego Movie) (“2014 Domestic”). Sequels, prequels, adaptations, and reboots of established film series seem to enjoy an oft-lamented but indisputable popularity, if box-office grosses are any indication.[1] While original content has not disappeared from theaters, the major studios’ release rosters are Felix Brinker nowadays built around a handful of increasingly expensive, immensely profitable “tentpole” movies that repeat and vary the elements of a preceding source text in order to tell them again, but differently (Balio 25-33; Eco, “Innovation” 167; Kelleter, “Einführung” 27). Furthermore, as part of transmedial entertainment franchises that expand beyond cinema, the films listed above are indicative of contemporary cinema’s repositioning vis-à-vis other media, and they function in conjunction with a variety of related serial texts from other medial contexts rather than on their own—by connecting to superhero comic books, live-action and animated television programming, or digital games, for example.
