Special Volunteers are individuals that participate in volunteer program activities but are not approved volunteers. Special Volunteers are limited to 4 visits with an approved volunteer. Ex-offenders can be a special volunteer 1 year after their release Other volunteer opportunities are available such as correspondence, literature, conference planning and can be done while waiting to get approved by TDCJ. Approved Volunteers have completed the volunteer application and attended the 4 hour VOLUNTEER TRAINING ORIENTATION and have been approved by TDCJ Volunteer Services Requirements for Approved Volunteers must have 1 year of sobriety, if participating in a Substance Abuse Treatment Program such as AA, NA, CA, be 18 years of age, have a clear criminal history for at least 18 months - meaning no felony charges or convictions for 18 months and, if been to prison, been out for a period of at least 18 months at the time of the application. IF DOING A SPECIAL ORIENTATION TRAINING, LIKE THE ONE THAT ONE OF OUR CFC COMMITTEES DO, THEN YOU CAN FILL OUT THE VOLUNTEER TRAINING APPLICAION AND DO THE 4 HOUR ORIENTATION ALL AT ONCE. If doing a Regular Orientation Training, which is one that is held throughout the year at the different TDCJ units,(see above) then you will need to complete the Volunteer Application online or print the application and mail it in. TDCJ will review and upon approval will send you a letter saying you are approved. Then you can go to one of the Regular Orientation Trainings. You can get this form online at the TDCJ Volunteer Services Rehabilitation Programs Division at tdcj.state.tx.us/divisions/rpd/rpd_volunteer.html People on probation or parole may become an approved volunteer provided they have a clear criminal background for the previous 18 months and have a letter from their PO. This letter, generally, is just to acknowledge probation or parole officer knows person going in. Ex-offenders can be a special volunteer 1 year after their release or participate in the Partners Program where they have to be out 6 months and go in with an approved volunteer. If a relative, friend, victim or enemy is incarcerated volunteers are required to acknowledge it on their application. Volunteers cannot go into the facilities where relatives, friends, victims or enemies are assigned but they can go into other facilities. If someone wants to be an approved volunteer and has a clear record the process typically takes 2 or 3 weeks. If there is a criminal history, then, additional information or support letters or possibly dispositions for crimes, etc…will be required and will require additional processing time. .
