Walker This dissertation is a study of the loyalist Church of England clergy in the American Revolution. By reconstructing the experience and identity of this largely-misunderstood group, it sheds light on the relationship between church and empire, the role of religious pluralism and toleration in the American Revolution, the dynamics of loyalist politics, and the religious impact of the American Revolution on Britain. It is based primarily on the loyalist clergy’s own correspondence and writings, the records of the American Loyalist Claims Commission, and the archives of the SPG (the Church of England’s missionary arm). The study focuses on the New England and Mid-Atlantic colonies, where Anglicans formed a religious minority and where their clergy were overwhelmingly loyalist. It begins with the founding of the SPG in 1701 and its first forays into America. It then examines the state of religious pluralism and toleration in New England, the polarising contest over the proposed creation of an American bishop after the Seven Years’ War, and the role of the loyalist clergy in the Revolutionary War itself, focusing particularly on conflicts occasioned by the Anglican liturgy and Book of Common Prayer.

    The Bishop of London, colonialism and transatlantic slavery: Research brief for a temporary exhibition, spring 2022 and information to input into permanent displays Introduction Fulham Palace is one of the earliest and most intriguing historic powerhouses situated alongside the Thames and the last one to be fully restored. It dates back to 704AD and for over thirteen centuries was owned by the Bishop of London. The Palace site is of exceptional archaeological interest and has been a scheduled monument since 1976. The buildings are listed as Grade I and II. The 13 acres of botanical gardens, with plant specimens introduced here from all over the world in the late 17th century, are Grade II* listed. Fulham Palace Trust has run the site since 2011. We are restoring it to its former glory so that we can fulfil our vision to engage people of all ages and from all walks of life with the many benefits the Palace and gardens have to offer. Our site-wide interpretation, inspired learning and engagement programmes, and richly-textured exhibitions reveal insights, through the individual stories of the Bishops of London, into over 1,300 years of English history. In 2019 we completed a £3.8m capital project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to restore and renew the historic house and garden. The Trust opens the Palace and gardens seven days a week free of charge. In 2019/20 we welcomed 340,000 visitors. We manage a museum, café, an award-winning schools programme (engaging over 5,640 pupils annually) and we stage a wide range of cultural events.

    The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry.

  • William Smith's Biblical Notebook (1729)
    William Smith’s Biblical Notebook (1729): A Manuscript Recovered Among New College’s early printed books there is a curious double volume, undistinguished in aspect and all but forgotten until very recently. It consists of two items, the first a manuscript, the second a printed book. The combined volume arrived into the library probably in the very early twentieth century, and as the librarians receiving and eventually shelving the book evidently did not consider the manuscript portion to be worthy of more than a tacit harrumph, its existence was barely acknowledged, and then forgotten,1 until some recent browsing chanced upon the forgotten volume. The second, printed text is a copy of the first four books of the Odes of Horace, translated by Francis Wrangham (1769-1842), a clergyman from Yorkshire who was educated at Hull and Cambridge. Wrangham was an extremely prolific writer and poet, and he corresponded with many writers of the time, including Wordsworth and Byron. He was a bibliomaniac, obsessed with rare editions and books printed on coloured paper, and upon his death his vast library was split between Trinity College, Cambridge, and public auction. He had a habit of publishing his books commercially and then reprinting them privately in small runs; New College’s copy of his Horace is one of these latter imprints, and was published in Chester sometime shortly after 1822. The first item in the volume is a totally different object. It is a student notebook, signed by one William Smith and dated by him to 1729. A later owner has found a portrait of this Smith and pasted it into the front of the notebook.2 Assuming the portrait is correctly matched to the scribe, this is William Smith the classical scholar (1711-87), an eighteenth-century gentleman commoner of the college.

Smith) This study centers upon Edmund Burke’s early literary career, and his move from Dublin to London in 1750, to explore the interplay of academic, professional, and commercial networks that comprised the mid-eighteenth-century Republic of Letters in Britain and Ireland. Burke’s experiences before his entry into politics, particularly his relationship with the bookseller Robert Dodsley, may be used both to illustrate the political and intellectual debates that infused those networks, and to deepen our understanding of the publisher-author relationship at that time. It is argued here that it was Burke’s involvement with Irish Patriot debates in his Dublin days, rather than any assumed Catholic or colonial resentment, that shaped his early publications, not least since Dodsley himself was engaged in a revision of Patriot literary discourse at his “Tully’s Head” business in the light of the legacy of his own patron Alexander Pope.

They are named after Fulham Palace, the bishops’ former residence, where they were housed before being deposited in Lambeth Palace Library by the Church Commissioners in 1960. The majority of the collection dates from the mid eighteenth century to the end of the nineteenth century, and is made up of 380 volumes. The papers are arranged by bishop and are bound together into several volumes (with the exception of John Jackson’s papers, which are in loose files). Individual bishop’s papers include letters, visitation returns, confirmation papers, examination papers and certificates granted to clergymen holding more than one living.
