  • Eurovista Special Issue All Texts
From the Editors This is the first new issue of EuroVista to be freely available online. As anticipated in earlier editorials, from now on whole issues and/or individual articles may be downloaded without charge from the EuroVista website (http://www.euro-vista.org/). This includes those back issues that before only were available on the website behind a paywall. We are grateful to the CEP, that has made this possible. The main reason for this change is to make the journal more easily accessible and therefore, we hope and expect, much more widely read. Do please tell all your friends and colleagues the good news! And what a start we have for this new formula! This issue has been compiled and edited by a member of our Editorial Board, Dr Beth Weaver, University of Strathclyde, Scotland. As she writes in her introduction, we believe this to be the first journal ever to devote an entire issue to contributions made by people who have desisted from offending, some of whom may indeed describe themselves as in a continuing process of desistance. People who have committed crimes have usually been treated as subjects of research and sometimes even as its objects, but their own voice has not often been easy to hear. This issue, by contrast, includes writings by people from a large number of countries who set out a diverse range of accounts of and reflections on their own experiences. About the only thing they all have in common is that they have been convicted of offences and are now or have been on a journey towards ways of living in which offending has no place.

  • Theology of the Incarcerated: Views from the Underside Stuart Reginald
THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD S. R. WARE THEOLOGY OF THE INCARCERATED: VIEWS FROM THE UNDERSIDE Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2006 THEOLOGY OF THE INCARCERATED: VIEWS FROM THE UNDERSIDE STUART REGINALD WARE Submitted for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in the Department of Biblical Studies UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD and the URBAN THEOLOGY UNIT, SHEFFIELD September 2006 SUMMARY OF THESIS THEOLOGY OF THE INCARCERATED: VIEWS FROM THE UNDERSIDE This thesis deals with the development of a contextual theology that explores the use of prison as punishment and its consequences from the perspective of those who have served a prison sentence. My painful journey through imprisonment and the early years following my release, are paralleled by my early struggles in the development of this thesis and my theological reflection. The result is the development of a hermeneutical model that begins with a critical reflection on the historical use of imprisonment as punishment. The next chapter contains extracts from my diaries of my time in prison (1996-97) and the years following my release up to 2001. Chapter Three contains an analysis of my interviews with sixty-two former prisoners in order to record their 'dangerous memories'. The second half of my thesis begins with the exploration of consciousness raising in an attempt to understand control and surveillance techniques that continue to exclude the incarcerated and are used to govern our lives. Chapter Four also explores the concept of knowledge-power on the part of the Establishment, including the Church. Yet I find the powerless and excluded also have a knowledge-power.

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Paper Rock magazine - Issue 5 Abstract ATTENTION: Paper, Rock readers SUBJECT: Take a chance We’ve all been there. Your mind begins to race as you recite the proverbial ‘scissors, paper, rock’ before releasing your hand into uncertain terrain. You make a choice. You take a chance. Welcome to Paper, Rock magazine for 2010- where taking a chance is what we’re all about. We’ve coined it the ‘other’ issue because this year’s magazine ventures beyond what you’ve ever seen before in paper rock, it’s ‘other’ to its predecessors. The news and features section promises to excite, engage and provoke you. We’ve introduced ‘News that rocked our world’ as we felt it is important to look back on the news and events that shook our world. The lifestyle section puts a hold on the blasé clichés of food, travel and health. We give you the first glimpses of the meaty craze that has the tongues of Australia’s top food critics wagging in salivating desire. And, take you to the underground of the food world that the big chain stores don’t want you to know about.

  • Society and Prisons
This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project to make the world’s books discoverable online. It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that’s often difficult to discover. Marks, notations and other marginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book’s long journey from the publisher to a library and finally to you. Usage guidelines Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing this resource, we have taken steps to prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying. We also ask that you: + Make non-commercial use of the files We designed Google Book Search for use by individuals, and we request that you use these files for personal, non-commercial purposes. + Refrain from automated querying Do not send automated queries of any sort to Google’s system: If you are conducting research on machine translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a large amount of text is helpful, please contact us.
