Saltdogs starting pitcher John Brownell pitched a complete-game shutout, holding the Goldeyes to five hits over nine innings. Lincoln supported Brownell with a five-run bottom of the fourth. Mazzola forced home the night’s first run with a bases-loaded walk. Tyler Moore followed with an RBI single, and Lincoln added three more on two-out base hits from Ivan Marin and Christian Ibarra. Curt Smith made it 6-0 in the fifth on a solo home run to left. Brownell walked two and struck out five in what was his 39th career complete game and ninth career shutout. Parker French started for Winnipeg and took the loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits over five innings. Tyler Hill extended his hitting streak to 11 games. It was Brownell’s ninth career shutout and his 39th career complete game. PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brownell finished his effort on 103 pitches in a game that took just two hours and 30 minutes. PLAY OF THE GAME: Veteran designated hitter Curt Smith crushed his second home run of the series, a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth. It was Smith’s eighth career home run and 28th RBI in 39 games against Winnipeg. It was Brownell’s 39th career complete game and ninth career shutout. Lincoln took a 5-0 lead with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Josh Mazzola walked to force home Randolph Oduber. Tyler Moore followed with an RBI single. Two batters later, Ivan Marin hit a two-out, two-run single, and was followed by an RBI single from Christian Ibarra. Curt Smith hit a two-out, solo home run for the Saltdogs (24-27) in the bottom of the fifth. Goldeyes’ starter Parker French (2-3) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in five innings. French walked five and struck out two. Tyler Hill had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Joel Bender, Brandon Bingel, and Marcus Crescentini each threw a scoreless inning of relief for Winnipeg. The series concludes Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Mitchell Lambson (5-2, 3.28) faces left-hander Kyle Kinman (1-3, 3.05). On Wednesday, they answered the call with a five-run bottom of the fourth inning that led to a 6-0 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Haymarket Park. Lincoln (24-27) is now 8-1 this year when two different national anthems are played before first pitch. “It makes all the difference in the world when you can get those hits sometimes,” Lincoln manager Bobby Brown said. “It allows your pitcher to breathe a little bit.” John Brownell tossed a complete-game shutout, becoming the first Saltdog pitcher since Nick Tepesch on June 30 to complete the feat. It is the third complete game by a Saltdog pitcher this season. In the five-run fourth, Josh Mazzola drew a walk with the bases loaded to put Lincoln ahead 1-0. Following an RBI single from Tyler Moore, Ivan Marin added to the lead with an two-run base knock and Christian Ibarra added an RBI single of his own for the 5-0 lead. “Marin got a big hit in that inning, Ibarra got a big hit in that inning — (Daniel) Herrera didn't get a hit, but he stayed out of the double play to give our guys a chance,” Brown said. “I thought that was the key at-bat in the inning.” Curt Smith added a solo home run in the fifth for the game's final run. The Saltdog designated hitter has now homered in back-to-back games in the series and is 7-of-11 with six RBI in his last three games. With the 6-0 lead, Brownell continued the stellar Saltdog pitching that carried over from Shairon Martis outing in Tuesday's 9-2 victory. Brownell recorded five strikeouts and gave up five hits while allowing two walks Wednesday. In the series, Saltdog pitchers have allowed just eight hits and one earned run. “Two veteran guys,” Brown said. “That's the way we kind of built it with them. Martis and Brownell the last two nights: spectacular.” With Brownell (4-3) going all nine innings and Martis going 6 2/3 Tuesday, the Saltdog bullpen has received a major rest. The Saltdogs also had an off day Monday. Austin Pettibone threw 1 1/3 innings Tuesday, followed by one inning from Tyler Anderson. “(Austin) Boyle and Pettibone were leading the league in appearances at one point we were using them so much,” Brown said. “When you can go deep in the game like that, score some runs, you can kind of save those guys.” Lincoln will look for the sweep Thursday against the Goldeyes at 7 p.m. ‘DOGS CLINCH SERIES BEHIND BROWNELL’S SHUTOUT MICHAEL DIXON – LINCOLN SALTDOGS – WEDNESDAY, JULY 10th LINCOLN, Nebraska – John Brownell tossed the ninth shutout of his career, and the Saltdogs beat the Goldeyes 6-0 at Haymarket Park on Wednesday night. Brownell’s complete game was the 39th of his career, and the 36-year-old allowed just six hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. The shutout was Lincoln’s second of the year after Nick Tepesch finished one on June 30th, and the third complete game of the year. Curt Smith had two more hits and a second home run in as many nights, and Ivan Marin had a two-run single as part of a five-run 4th inning. Josh Mazzola drew a bases-loaded walk to open the scoring in the 4th, and Tyler Moore singled in another run right after. After Marin made it 4-0 with his two-run single, Christian Ibarra singled in one more to finish the inning. The ‘Dogs added another run on Curt Smith’s ninth homer of the year in the 5th – a solo shot with two outs in the inning. Smith now has hits in eight consecutive games, which ties the ‘Dogs season high and is Smith’s best run in 2019. Ibarra walked two more times, and Mazzola had a pair of walks to go with a double to make it hits in four consecutive games to begin his ‘Dogs tenure. Brownell has combined with Shairon Martis to toss 15.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits. Lincoln has a shot to sweep a series for the second time this season. First-pitch time on Friday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and pregame coverage will begin at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN Lincoln 101.5 FM/1480 AM.     MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

Woensdag is tijdens het toernooi voor velen een bijzondere dag. ‘s Avonds staat er bijna altijd een wedstrijd op het programma tussen twee ploegen die vantevoren worden gezien als titelkandidaat. Of gewoon een avond met een belangrijke wedstrijd, zoals in het verleden bijvoorbeeld het duel tussen Nederland en de Sullivans. Maar de woensdag is voor veel medewerkers ook op een andere manier bijzonder. Elk toernooi zijn er ruim honderd vrijwilligers van ‘s morgens vroeg tot ‘s avonds laat in de weer om alles op en rond het veld goed te laten verlopen. Woensdag is het toernooi halverwege en dan slaat bij velen meestal even een moment van vermoeidheid toe. Gelukkig duurt dat nooit lang, want als de middagwedstijd eenmaal is gespeeld is iedereen weer fris en fruitig. Helemaal klaar voor de volgende vijf dagen van het toernooi. Zo was het in de voorgaande toernooien en zo zal het vrijwel zeker ook in 2022 zijn. Als we de dertigste Honkbalweek Haarlem weer in het stadion gaan beleven. 2 LEESVOER 27 juni 2020 Nr.
