The boundary last over from Latham brought up the 19th 50 run partnership between Williamson and Latham. What a pair. Gabriel over pitches and Williamson drives one out through cover for two. A good full delivery from Joseph to finish the over. (NZ 68/1) 24th over - Gabriel to continue with the West Indies putting in a leg slip in. Signs of some short stuff to come. A mix up between the two batsman, West Indies have a shy at the stumps but miss. A direct hit would have seen Williamson walking back to the pavilion. The next ball is a no ball called by the third umpire. That was Gabriel's 194th no ball the most in test cricket. Latham punches one off the back foot and it runs away for four through backward-point. Great shot from Latham. Latham flicks one off his pads for a single to end the over and the second hour of play. New Zealand have definitely won the second hour of play. (NZ 62/1) 12th over - Roach to continue with is fifth over. Short and wide from Roach and Williamson smashes him through the covers off the back foot for four. Another boundary for Williamson but this time a bit lucky. Great length from Roach and Willaimson pushes at it and it skews off the bat and goes through gully for four. That boundary brings up 1000 runs at Seddon Park for Williamson. Williamson plays out the last ball of the over solid in defence. (NZ 31/1) Fourth over - Gabriel to continue to Young. Young gets his first run in test cricket with a drive through the covers for a single. The first boundary of the test summer comes through Latham. Gabriel over pitches and Latham takes full toll with a perfect cover drive through for four. A chance goes begging for West Indies. Great delivery from Gabriel catches the edge but the keeper and Bravo look at each other, no one goes for it and races away for four. OUT - The West Indies don't have to wait long. Next ball a full delivery from Gabriel has hit Young right and front and he has been given out. Young lbw b Gabriel 5 (11) The wicket ends the over. A great over from Gabriel. (NZ 14/1) 12:55pm - Both sides are walking out onto the field for the national anthems. 12:38pm - West Indies have won the toss and have elected to bowl. The first session is from 1pm to 3:50pm. The afternoon session is from 4:10pm to 7pm stumps, with the possibility of an extra half hour. The umpires are targeting 85 overs, but it all depends on light, as they can't use the floodlights. Team news for New Zealand is that Daryl Mitchell comes into the starting XI, with Mitch Santner missing out. Blackcaps: Tom Latham, Will Young, Kane Williamson (c), Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholas, Tom Blunder, Daryl Mitchell, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult West Indies: John Campbell, Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Jermaine Blackwood, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich (wk), Jason Holder (capt), Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel 11:57pm - Further delays to play, with a toss now due at 12:30pm and first ball scheduled for 1pm. Welcome to New Zealand's 'summer' of cricket. Clearly, this photo was taken yesterday ^^^ 11:45pm - The latest update from Hamilton is that the covers are off and we'll have the toss at 12:10pm. The players are warming up on the field and play will begin at 12:40pm. 10:32am - Covers are on the pitch at Hamilton, so the prospects of play starting on time are slim. We've been here before. Remember, the third T20 was rained out after just 2.2 overs on Monday, but the consensus is that some play will be possible today. 10:06am - In related news from quarantine, Pakistan have elected to forego their scheduled four-day match with NZ A from December 10-13, preferring to play some intra-squad games to prepare for their T20 and test matches against New Zealand. That's a shame for the fringe Blackcaps candidates, who were counting on these fixtures to stake claims for test spots. Obviously, the tourists have struck problems adapting to their isolation protocols since arriving in New Zealand, so maybe this is a necessary adjustment to their preparation. ***** Kia ora, good morning and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the opening day of the first cricket test between New Zealand and West Indies at Hamilton. After wrapping up the T20 series over last weekend, the Blackcaps now turn their attention to the five-day format, with a spot in the world test championship final still on offer. A series win could see them move past England into third place. Sitting second in ICC test rankings - just a point behind Australia - New Zealand have fashioned a formidable record on home wickets in recent years and bring a settled squad into this encounter against the 'Calypso Kings', ranked eighth. The home side have been thrown a curve ball - maybe a bouncer, in cricket parlance - with the withdrawal of nuggety wicketkeeper BJ Watling with a hamstring injury. His absence has had a ripple affect on the line-up, with opening batsman Tom Blundell dropping down the order to take the gloves and Will Young making his long-awaited debut against the new ball. Captain Kane Williamson and bowling ace Trent Boult will rejoin the squad, after arriving back from the Indian Premier League and missing the T20 series. Only four Blackcaps - Ross Taylor, Kyle Jamieson, Mitch Santner and Tim Southey - contested the short form, while only Shimron Hetmyer and Kemar Roach back up for West Indies. Weather in Hamilton today is overcast, with occasion rain forecast. Blackcaps batsman Young poised for long-awaited test debut James Regan Another standout performer in domestic cricket is poised to make a long-awaited Blackcaps debut in the first test against West Indies in Hamilton. Just three days after South African-born Devon Conway starred for the T20 team, Will Young may earn his first cap, with an injury cloud hovering over one of the team's senior players. Coach Gary Stead has confirmed Young will play, if wicketkeeper BJ Watling's hamstring injury rules him out. "Tomorrow, we'll make a call on whether he's a chance or not," says Stead. Young's been in this position before. Eighteen months ago, he was supposed to face Bangladesh in Christchurch, replacing captain Kane Williamson, before the terrorist attack saw the test cancelled. But sheer volume of runs has given him another chance. "It's always helpful, when you put your selectors hat on, when you have genuine competition for places," says Stead. "I think Will's scored 4-5 'A' centuries in the past couple of years." Young's been a standout in the West Indies' warm-up series against New Zealand A and if there was any doubt Conway would be ready for the international stage, he put those to bed in the recent T20 series. Conway's joined the squad as cover for Watling, but won't be jumping the cue, with the coach staying loyal to a squad that's only lost one of their last nine series. "It's been a settled team and I think that's helped us have some of the success we've had," says Stead. "Guys know it's not one performance that will have them in or out of the side." Says veteran fast bowler Trent Boult: "It's brilliant, it's been a very healthy competition... it makes guys work hard for their spots and not get complacent in any respect." The Blackcaps can't afford that complacency this summer - they must win all four tests, if they're to stay a chance of qualifying for the inaugural test championship final at Lord's.
