    A Dog’s Heart by Alexander Raskatov Alexander Raskatov’s stage compositions, numerous works for orchestra, vocal groups, soloists and chamber ensembles reflect the sophisticated and subtle aesthetics of the composer. 1 In the composer’s own words, his music often deals with ‘the forgotten Romantic idioms’. These Romantic elements are often transformed and presented in a rather unusual, nostalgic, almost ‘unreal’ context. His early compositions sometimes have references to some elements of minimalism, as well as to Russian popular arts songs of the nineteenth-century (similar to the music of his older compatriot Valentin Silvestrov). There are also sacred, liturgical music elements in Raskatov’s music, in all periods of his work, the most important examples being his Stabat Mater for high voice and organ (1988), Miserere, a double concerto for viola, cello and orchestra (1992), Kyrie Eleison for solo cello (1992), Misteria brevis for piano and percussion instruments (1992), Gebet for soprano and string quartet (1996), Seven Stages of Alleluia for voice, percussion and piano (1993), Praise for male voices (1998), The Last Freedom, a requiem for mixed choir and orchestra (2001) and Obikhod for male voices and string 1 Raskatov was born in 1953 in Moscow, and graduated from Moscow Conservatoire in 1978. In 1990 Raskatov together with other Russian composers – Edison Denisov, Vladimir Tarnopolski, Viktor Yekimovsky, Alexander Vustin - founded the group ASM-2 (Association of Contemporary Music – 2). From 1994 to 2004 Raskatov lives and works in Germany, from 2004 – in France. Raskatov gets commissions from numerous important music festivals, including the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, the festival of the Cité de la Musique in Paris and the Salzburg Easter Festival, where Raskatov was awarded the Composition Prize in 1998.

    MOSCOW FORUM X Festival for Contemporary Music 1. TEN STEPS OF THE “FORUM” The beginning of the nineties […] A time when everything was possible. Some people opened up businesses, some people went into the government, whereas some people deviated from their professions. There was a mass exodus of composers to the West, comparable only to a similar exodus during the post-revolutionary years in Russia or to the situation in Germany during the 1930s. Here is an incomplete list of only Moscow- based composers who have left the country during that period: Alfred Schnittke, Sophia Gubaidulina, Vassily Lobanov and Alexander Raskatov moved to Germany, Elena Firsova, Dmitri Smirnov and Vladislav Shoot ended up in England, Leonid Hrabovsky moved to America and Nikolai Korndorf – to Canada, while Edison Denisov was compelled to relocate to France for medical treatment after a car accident. Following them, many younger composers, not being greatly on demand in their native land, go away in search for success to other countries more suitable for their professions. “A whole musical culture has left Russia” – this is how prof. Yuri Kholopov characterized the situation in one of the musicological conferences. Amid this cultural debris politicians were searching for a new national idea, economists were seeking a new life-saving economic model, while the average people in the street were scrambling together the means for a basic livelihood. “The tongue-less street is squirming – it has nothing by means it could scream of converse” – these lines by Mayakovsky had acquired a similar topicality in Russia at the end of the previous century as they had during the revolutionary years.

What holds them in tension, as equal forces straining in opposite directions, is the artist’s mature subjectivity, stripped of hubris and pomposity, unashamed either of its fallibility or of the modest assurance it has gained as a result of age and exile. Edward W. Said: On late Style The world première recording of Alfred Schnittke’s posthumous Ninth symphony, released simultaneously with a new recording of recent works by Arvo Pärt, not only makes for an indispensable addition to the wide spectrum of Post-Soviet composition on ECM New Series, which was launched 25 years ago with Pärt’s “Tabula rasa”. The composer’s last musical work before his death in 1998 is an impressive triumph of spiritual powers over physical constraints. Struggling with the debilitating effects of a series of strokes, Schnittke notated the three movements with a shaky left hand in short-score but was unable to finish the complete orchestration. The 40-minute work for standard symphony orchestra (with added percussion and harpsichord) doesn’t present any kind of final statement thus defying conventional interpretation. Relinquishing obvious contrasts, narrative aspects and semantic allusions the symphony is both contrapuntally elaborate and playfully serene, starkly dissonant and magically melodious. It will certainly offer interesting new impulses to debates on the mystery of “late style”.

Pflege und Verbreitung der vom Verlag vertretenen Kompositionen bilden daher auch den eindeutigen Schwerpunkt unserer Arbeit. Die erfolgreiche Zu- sammenarbeit mit einer stattlichen Anzahl von Autoren währt bereits viele Jahrzehn- te. Die vorliegende Publikation portraitiert nun eine repräsentative Auswahl unserer Komponistinnen und Komponisten aus dem Bereich der Ernsten Musik. Ihnen und all jenen, die nur namentlich erwähnt werden, sei für die vertrauensvolle und fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit herzlich gedankt. Den Grundstein für den Verlag legte Dr. Hans Sikorski (1899-1972) im Jahre 1935 in Berlin. Seit 1946 in Hamburg ansässig, umfasst und vertritt die unabhängige, nach wie vor familiengeführte Musikverlagsgruppe inzwischen mehr als 30 Verlage aus aller Welt. Bereits seit Jahrzehnten engagiert sich Sikorski für die zeitgenössische Musik. Das Spektrum reicht hierbei von Kammermusik, Orchestermusik und Bühnenwerken über Musicals bis hin zu Filmmusiken. Einen elementaren Schwerpunkt bilden dabei die Werke der Komponisten der ehemaligen Sowjetunion. Namen wie Dmitri Schostako- witsch, Sergej Prokofjew, Aram Chatschaturjan und Dmitri Kabalewski drangen durch die intensive Verlagsarbeit verstärkt in das Bewusstsein des westlichen Kulturlebens und etablierten sich im Konzertgeschehen. Gleiches gelang mit der nachfolgenden Komponistengeneration und den Oeuvres von Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, Edison Denissow, Gija Kantscheli, Galina Ustwolskaja und anderen. Aber auch zahl- reiche deutsche Autoren werden erfolgreich vertreten, unter ihnen Peter Ruzicka, Ulrich Leyendecker, Jens-Peter Ostendorf, Manfred Trojahn, Wolfgang von Schweinitz und Jan Müller-Wieland.

Alexander Ivashkin: Ambassador for Contemporary Music * Elena Artamonova Alexander Vasilyevich Ivashkin (1948-2014) was one of internationally eminent musicians and academic researchers at the turn of the most recent century. Soviet by birth, he was at home not only in his native Russia and London, where he made his home for the last fifteen years of his life, but also in many renowned concert halls, festivals, conservatories and international conferences around the globe. The author and editor of twenty books published in Russian, English, German, Italian and Japanese, Ivashkin left an extensive legacy which includes notable monographs on the composers Krzysztof Penderecki, Charles Ives and Alfred Schnittke, two books of studies on the life and music of Dmitrii Shostakovich, as well as biographical monographs on the cellists Sviatoslav Knushevitskii, Daniel Shafran and Mstislav Rostropovich. As the biographer of Schnittke, his close friend for many years, Ivashkin produced books, catalogues and publications on the composer which are based on many personal conversations and professional collaborations with him; they are regarded as the best in-depth sources and studies with their unique inner penetration, understanding and assessment of Schnittke’s life and work.
