Henricks, Ph.D., Library Director, and edited by Rosemary Kramer, Secretary, Library Board of Trustees © 2021 The History of Library Service in Dubuque, Iowa For many of us, one of our fondest memories revolves around getting a library card. Libraries are a quintessential part of how we learn and engage with the local community. Carnegie-Stout has a rich history of meeting its community’s educational, recreational, and informational needs. What follows tells the story of Carnegie-Stout. The Young Men’s Library Association In June 1856, a group of young professional men who had moved here from the eastern United States decided to introduce a “course of lectures” for that winter on “literary and scientific subjects, the object being to improve knowledge and improve the public taste of their chosen home.”1 During the second year of lectures a tidy profit was made and it was decided that they should purchase books. The members met with attorney J. S. Blatchley, who had a collection of 150 books that he rented out from his office for $5.00 per year. Blatchley agreed to turn his books over to the lecture society because it meant the collection could be doubled and his members would enjoy a free reading ticket for a year as part of the deal. In March of 1859 the organization was incorporated by the “15 young men, who were the leading spirits in all intellectual movements in this progressive Iowa city of about 14,000 inhabitants”2 as the Young Men’s Literary Association.

A Brief (Very Brief) History of Dubuque (see www.encyclopediadubuque.org for more) In 1788, Julien Dubuque, a French-Canadian, was granted rights by the Mesquakie (aka Meskwaki) Indians to mine their land for lead; he settled near the mouth of Catfish Creek (now part of the State Park, Mines of Spain Recreation Area). Dubuque, for whom the city is named, is considered to be the first white man to settle in Iowa, making Dubuque the oldest City in Iowa. For followers of the “Triple Crown Race”, La Classique internationale de Canots de la Mauricie (Shawinigan) in Quebec, Canada, Julien Dubuque, was born in Trois-Rivières (his childhood cradle is located in the Mississippi River Museum). Imagine the journey he made by water to arrive here! So, it is somehow fitting that the 50th Annual USCA National Championships should be held on “the Father of Waters,” the 2nd longest river in the United States, 4th longest in the world (including Missouri and Jefferson River feeds). In 1965, after severe flooding of much of the downtown area, a flood wall was built to protect Dubuque’s citizens and structures from future flooding, so much of the waterfront is rimmed in native limestone and protected by flood gates. Chaplain Schmitt Island, (named after Father Aloysius H. Schmitt) aka City Island, is Race HQ for Nationals 2017. Formerly an airport, a city dump site and a car racing track, it is now a recreational area, with a hiking/biking trail, an indoor iceskating arena (open to the public), baseball fields, boat docks, Dubuque Water Sports Club, Miller Riverview Park Campground, casino, hotel.

    Greetings to all Corvette enthusiasts, Rollin’ on the River… It is our distinct pleasure to invite you to this year’s Vettes on the River (VOTR) event. This year’s “Corvettes only” show & shine will be held at the Port of Dubuque, in Dubuque, Iowa. Our hosts, the Key City Corvette Club has teamed-up with Mid-West Corvettes to make this event bigger than ever. There will be more to do, more to eat, more to see, and best of all… more Corvettes. Hold the date of September 7th, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for this event. Last year, we invited 12 clubs to the VOTR event in Le Claire, IA and had 280 Corvettes come through the gate. This year we are inviting over 27 clubs and our challenge is to “fill the harbor”. We are anticipating over 500 Corvettes and we want you to be a part of this exciting event. If you own a Corvette, you have already paid your entry fee. Just show up in your Corvette, come on through the gate, and enjoy the day with your fellow fiberglass fanatics and interact with other clubs. Our committee has planned lots of activities and there will be a Mayor’s choice award and trophies for each “C” generation. We will also have a walking poker event and a 50/50 drawing for charity. There will be free trolley rides to get you to all the shops and other attractions surrounding the harbor and downtown Dubuque. There are also many restaurants and pubs close by for you to enjoy.

After graduation, opportunities for professional development cultivate Iowa’s next generation of leaders.
