hereward and the Barony of Bourne file:///C:/EDrive/Medieval Texts/Articles/Geneaology/hereward.htm Lincolnshire History and Archaeology, 29 (1994), 7-10. Hereward 'the Wake' and the Barony of Bourne: a Reassessment of a Fenland Legend [1] Hereward, generally known as 'the Wake', is second only to Robin Hood in the pantheon of English heroes. From at least the early twelfth century his deeds were celebrated in Anglo-Norman aristocratic circles, and he was no doubt the subject of many a popular tale and song from an early period. [2] But throughout the Middle Ages Hereward's fame was local, being confined to the East Midlands and East Anglia. [3] It was only in the nineteenth century that the rebel became a truly national icon with the publication of Charles Kingsley novel Hereward the Wake .[4] The transformation was particularly Victorian: Hereward is portrayed as a prototype John Bull, a champion of the English nation. The assessment of historians has generally been more sober. Racial overtones have persisted in many accounts, but it has been tacitly accepted that Hereward expressed the fears and frustrations of a landed community under threat. Paradoxically, however, in the light of the nature of that community, the high social standing that the tradition has accorded him has been denied. [5] The earliest recorded notice of Hereward is the almost contemporary annal for 1071 in the D version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. A Northern recension probably produced at York,[6] its account of the events in the fenland are terse. It records the plunder of Peterborough in 1070 'by the men that Bishop Æthelric [late of Durham] had excommunicated because they had taken there all that he had', and the rebellion of Earls Edwin and Morcar in the following year.

I am very pleased to report that volunteers have come forward to continue Mary Morgan’s hard work and take on the mantle of producing the Rippingale News! Your new Editorial Team is: Editor: Mike Bronze & Deputy Editor: Jamie Petch Don’t worry if you don’t know who they are yet, I’m certain they’ll introduce themselves via future issues. To help ensure the Newsletter production can be sustained, and the workload on the volunteers who produce and distribute it minimised, the frequency of the Newsletter may need to be reduced, especially as most of the information is also on the website and in the Village Life magazine. No decision has been made, and the subject will be discussed at the April Council Meeting (Thursday 12th) in the Village Hall. If you have any comments or suggestions, please share them with the Council at the preceding Public Forum at 7.30pm. Alternatively, you can speak to any Councillor, or send your comments to the Parish Clerk ([email protected]) or Editor ([email protected]). Village Burglaries As you know, several properties in the village have been the victims of burglary or attempted break ins. There have also been reports of suspicious persons and vehicles. Hopefully the recent arrests will put a stop to the recent burglaries but if you see something that doesn’t seem right, Report it to 101, or 999 in an emergency. See page 4 for some simple steps to keep your property safe.

FIG. i6. MRS. CHARLES TINSLEY at the age of 76. 215 MRS. CHARLES TINSLEY, NOVELIST AND POET. A LITTLE-KNOWN LANCASHIRE AUTHORESS. By Henry Peet, M.A., F.S.A. DO not intend to enter into any criticism or review I of her writings, except an occasional reference here and there, in order to explain and make clear some inci dent in her career which otherwise would be obscure. My object is to give a brief account of her romantic experiences, and that of one or more members of her family ; to tell something of her early vicissitudes, of the few years when she mixed in the highest society, of her long struggle with poverty, and finally of her old age when she had peace of mind and lived in the enjoy ment of modest prosperity. Her principal works, in order of publication, were as follows : 1827. A small volume of Poems, published by Lutz. 1840. The Priest of the Nile, 2 vols., published by Whittaker & Co. 1847. A small volume of Poems, entitled Lays for the Thoughtful and the Solitary, published by Brook & Co. 1853. " Ellaby Grange," appeared in serial form in the Family Herald. 1853. Margaret, 2 vols., published by Richard Bentley. 1854. " Eunice," appeared in serial form in the Family Herald. 1854. Women as They Are, 2 vols., published by Richard Bentley. 1855. " The Heiress of Barren Court," appeared in serial form in the Family Herald. This story had previously appeared in the Metropolitan Magazine, under the title of " Storm and Sunshine." 216 Mrs. Charles Tinsley. 1858.
