Local Government Boundary Commission for England – proposals for West Berkshire Council. Proposed Wards for Tilehurst, Pangbourne and Purley. This response to the Local Government Boundary Commission for England proposals for the restructuring of the wards of West Berkshire Council, is from the West Berkshire Council members for Pangbourne, Purley on Thames and Tilehurst Westwood wards. These are respectively, Pamela Bale, Tim Metcalfe, Rick Jones and Laszlo Zverko. The response is also supported by the members for Tilehurst Birch Copse and Tilehurst Calcot wards. This represents five current wards with 10 members, to be reduced to four wards and eight members in most proposals. The WBC submission to the Commission suggested that Tilehurst comprised three two‐member wards, and that Pangbourne and Purley were combined, also in a two‐member ward (including Sulham & Tidmarsh). The Commission’s own report stated that this arrangement had good electoral quality, but felt that the community boundaries were poor and somewhat arbitrary, even though they are the current Parish boundaries. As a result of this view, the most recent Commission report proposes a radically different division for Purley, Pangbourne, and the central and north areas of Tilehurst. This separates Purley and Pangbourne based upon little community connection, enlarges the central Tilehurst ward area, and because that makes the rest of Tilehurst too small, combines that with Purley. This results in four wards of 1, 3, 2, 2 members. A formal response from WBC most recently suggested that the proposed Tilehurst & Purley Ward be split, though we do not favour that, and commentary in the WBC response should indicate that the case is marginal at best. -

The Church of The Most Holy Trinity Theale with North Street A collection of historical and architectural information about the ‘great church’ at Theale, gathered together with some additional observations by Albert Mars (Abridged version) …… denotes extracted text The full, unabridged text is available in the church or from Brian Gatward Preface Each time I celebrate the Eucharist at Theale I am conscious of the historical nature of the building, a building that has resounded to the sight, sound and action of Christian worship for over 170 years. What is not always as obvious is the context in which the church, through its architects, founders and patrons, has developed in that time. I am very grateful to Mr Albert Mars for the immense amount of work that he has undertaken in producing this history, so that a wider readership might have an insight into the reasons for the Church of The Most Holy Trinity Theale taking the form that it does. The Revd. Geoffrey Borrowdale October 2003 The Church of The Most Holy Trinity Theale with North Street Distinguished Visitors In the year 1833 Isambard Kingdom Brunel was in the Kennet Valley carrying out a survey to determine the route that the main railway line west of Reading was to take. Shortly after its consecration, another 19th century worthy, John Constable the artist, was attracted to the newly built church. He was in the area to carry out a commission at Englefield and made a sketch of the church which is now stored at the British Museum. The Consecration The church of Holy Trinity, which had drawn the interest of these two gentlemen, was consecrated on Tuesday 21st August 1832, by the Bishop of Salisbury, in whose diocese it then stood. -

North Reading Neighbourhood Policing Monthly Newsletter The Reading North Neighbourhood Policing Team have had another busy month. We have been dealing with a variety of community issues across theroughs of Caversham, Peppard, Mapledurham and Emmer Green. The main part of Reading North NHPT’s concentration has been aimed at disrupting and preventing anti-social behaviour across the 4 North Reading wards. There has been a variety of ASB that has had a number of different factors to address. We must stress that no job is the same so it does take a considerable about of planning and strategic thinking along with working with our partner agencies to create a positive result. It can also be a rather lengthy process and often cannot be corrected overnight. Mapledurham playing fields, situated off the Upper Woodcote Road has been one of our ASB hotspots with numerous complaints regarding vehicles parking up and playing loud music and doing so into the early hours of the morning. This was firstly brought to our attention via the North Reading Safer Neighbourhood Forum and. We firstly placed the area onto our daily NHPT patrol plan and along with the Problem Solving Team we were able to enhance the police presence and Anti-Social Behaviour “Operation in Progress” signs were placed around the car park. We then spent 4 consecutive nights sitting in the darkest corner of the carpark waiting for the suspects to arrive. We only issued 1 warning but we believe that the message was made clear and will be passed to their friends who more than likely were coming to meet them. -
