    Silk Road Encounters: Multi-Cultural Interactions in Northwestern China A travelling seminar of the Asian Sphere program Tour leaders: Yuri Pines, Michal Biran and Gidi Shelach The northwestern part of China proper (the modern provinces Gansu, Ningxia, and parts of Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia) is one of the most culturally diverse areas in China. For centuries, this area stood at the center of China’s interactions with other Asian cultures. Major east-west trade routes that pass through the Northwest—i.e., the Chinese section of the so-called Silk Road known as the Gansu corridor—served Western and Central Asian traders and migrants (from whom the contemporary sizeable Muslim minority originated), and from the 13th century onwards also some Europeans. Other, less notable routes, connected the steppe nomads at the north with the dwellers of the Tibet-Qinghai plateau at the south, and further south to Sichuan and even Southeast Asia, and India. The meeting point of four major cultures (Chinese, Islamic, Mongolian and Tibetan) at this vast arid area gave birth to a fascinating variety of interactions: from military struggles to trade, cultural amalgamation, and constant shift and negotiation of individual and collective identities. Some of the most notable features of these interactions are the magnificent Buddhist sites, some of the earliest, richest and best-preserved monuments of Buddhist prosperity on Chinese soil. The Northwest also served as birthplace of one of the most peculiar and enigmatic civilizations on China’s borderlands, namely the Tangut Xi Xia kingdom (1038- 1227). Today, this multi-ethnic area, inhabited by Chinese, Chinese-Muslims (Hui), Mongols, Tibetans, and numerous smaller minorities regains its erstwhile vitality due to beneficent investment policies of the Chinese government and increasing internationalization of local industries (of which rapidly evolving ties between the Ningxia-Hui Autonomous Region and the Arab world are most notable).

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper uses the method of social network analysis, takes the digital footprint of tourists of big data on the Internet as the original data, constructs the network structure map of Gansu tourism flow by using Ucinet and Netdraw software, and systematically describes the spatial structure characteristics of Gansu tourism flow. On this basis, it makes an in-depth analysis of the problems existing in the development of Gansu tourism. It is found that: (1) the level of scenic spots in Gansu has a low matching degree with consumption hot spots, and (2) the tourist flow routes in Gansu show a multi-core and multi-point distribution pattern. Scenic spots such as Mogao Grottoes, Kongtong Mountain, Labrang Temple and Zhangye Danxia Geopark jointly form the core of tourism flow, while scenic spots such as Dadun Gorge, Hesheng Ancient fossil Museum, Xinglong Mountain and Baita Temple are still "isolated island attractions". (3) there is a lack of systematic overall management for the further excavation and high-quality development of tourism resources in Gansu.     2015-2017 Conservation Report of Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an–Tianshan Corridor, China Section （C1442） STATE ADMINISTRATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE ICOMOS XI’AN CONSERVATION CENTER 1 Executive Summary Since Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an–Tianshan Corridor (hereinafter referred to as “Silk Roads”) was officially inscribed on the World Heritage List at its 38th World Heritage Committee, the State Parties of China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have respectively submitted their state of conservation reports to World Heritage Committee on 27 November 2015 and 15 and 29 January 2016, and a WHC decision was made at its 40th session in 2016. The Decision requests the State Parties to submit conservation reports to the World Heritage Centre by 1 December 2017 for examination by the World Heritage Committee at its 42nd session in 2018. “Silk Roads: China Section” has involved four provinces in China, known as Shaanxi Province, Henan Province, Gansu Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, consisting of 22 heritage sites. Since the property was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2014, according to the “World Heritage Conservation and Management Regulation”, the “Law on the Protection of Cultural Relics” and some other international charters and domestic laws, the State Party has been actively deploying conservation, management and monitoring activities of the Silk Roads and enhancing the entire conservation situation. The government and relevant institutions pay much attention and give support to the conservation and management work along the Silk Roads, and carry out conservation presentation of heritage 2 combined with the requirements of management planning and the current situation of the component sites.

This programme is highly specialised but is also very collaborative and team based, reflecting much of the profession. I became aware of the Zibby Garnett Travel Fellowship during my time at the Courtauld while researching a site that a previous recipient had worked at. I was struck by how unusual it was to find a fund dedicated to supporting newly qualified conservators. It is at exactly this time that extra experience and professional connections can prove to be crucial in making the transition from student to professional conservator. Study Trip I travelled to the Dunhuang Academy in Gansu Province, China. The Dunhuang Academy (DA) is one of the leading centres of wall painting conservation practice and research, as well as of site management, in Asia. The most well-known aspect of their work is the care and management of the World Heritage Site of the Mogao Grottoes. This extraordinary Buddhist site contains over 45,000 m2 of wall paintings dating from the fourth to thirteenth centuries CE spread across nearly 500 painted caves [Figure 1].
