Dear decision makers, Hit the reset button. Of all the nations in the world, we’ve had the most deaths from COVID-19. At the same time, we’re in the midst of “reopening our economy,” exposing more and more people to coronavirus and watching numbers of cases -- and deaths -- ​skyrocket​. In March, people went home and stayed there for weeks, to keep themselves and their neighbors safe. You didn’t use the time to set us up to defeat the virus. And then you started to reopen anyway, and too quickly. Right now we are on a path to lose nearly ​300,000 American lives​ by December 1st. Yet, in many states people can drink in bars, get a haircut, eat inside a restaurant, get a tattoo, get a massage, and do myriad other normal, pleasant, but non-essential activities. Get our priorities straight. More than 117,000 Americans had died of COVID-19 by mid-June. If our response had been as effective as Germany’s, estimates show that we would have had only 36,000 COVID-19 deaths in that period in the United States. If our response had been as effective as South Korea, Australia, or Singapore’s, fewer than 2,000 Americans would have died. We ​could have prevented 99% of those COVID-19 deaths​.

An era of jazz Jalopies Prohibition And Trigger-Happy Punks.” — Baby Face Nelson this essay examines a distinctive and coherent cycle of films, pro- duced in the late 1950s and early 1960s, which exploited the notoriety of Prohibition-era gangsters such as Baby Face Nelson, Al Capone, Bonnie Parker, Ma Barker, Mad Dog Coll, Pretty Boy Floyd, Machine Gun Kelly, John Dillinger, and Legs Diamond. Despite the historical specificity of the gangsters portrayed in these “bio-pics,” the films each display a marked interest in relating their exploits to contemporary topical con- cerns. Not the least of these was a desire to exploit headline-grabbing, sensational stories of delinquent youth in the 1950s and to link these to equally sensational stories of punk hoodlums from 1920s and 1930s. In the following pages, some of the crossovers and overlaps between cycles of juvenile delinquency films and gangster bio-pics will be critically eval- uated. At that time he had been a Student and Tutor in Politics at Christ Church, Oxford, since 1946. He had published admired revisionist studies of the soldier Lord Haig (1952) and the politician Bonar Law (1955), but unquestionably it was the brilliant success of his biography of Disraeli in 1966 that stimulated support for his election. Robert Norman William Blake was born in the Manor House, Brundall, on the Yare, Norfolk, a little outside Norwich, on 23 December 1916. His father, William Joseph Blake (1877–1964), born and brought up in Cornwall, was senior history master at the King Edward VI Grammar School in Norwich. His mother, Norah Lindley, née Daynes (1886–1957), of a Brundall family, was the daughter of a prominent Norwich solicitor. Blake’s second given name, Norman, was shared with a maternal uncle, His Honour John Norman Daynes, QC (1884–1966), who was a Judge of County Courts, 1945–57. For all his life, Blake identified himself fervently with his native county; but it was through his maternal line that his Norfolk roots originally ran deep. It was from his uncle Norman that in 1966 he inherited Riverview, a fine and ample Victorian house in Brundall with terraced gardens overlooking the Yare. Riverview remained his beloved retreat for the rest of his life. The eldest of three children (there was a brother who died young, and a sister, Jill), Robert attended a dame school in Brundall before going on to the King Edward VI School in Norwich where his father taught him history.

The first is the use of movies, documentaries, and docudramas to illuminate sociological phenomena and events and effectively use these mediums to teach basic sociological models and concepts. The second is to utilize different types of media as a means of teaching students how to apply relevant sociological models, concepts, and research to movies and to the real world, and thereby see the world through a sociological lens that allows them to analyze and think about the world in sociological terms. The third goal is to evaluate movies in terms of the extent to which they uncritically transmit stereotypes, misconceptions and ideologies regarding gender, race, ethnicity, poverty, social change, and social and political life. Ultimately, the goal of this course is to help students apply concepts taken from social science in a way that will enhance their judgment and help them make better decisions in both their personal and public life. Hybrid Class As a hybrid class, this class will meet Monday and Wednesdays from 10:45- 11:35. In this class the students will watch a variety of feature length movies and documentaries that will be used to highlight important social realities and processes within society.
