MEDIA ALERT GOODSPEED TO HONOR KRISTIN CHENOWETH Star of Stage and Screen, Tony Award-winner Chenoweth will be presented with The Goodspeed Award for Outstanding Contribution to Musical Theatre Goodspeed Musicals is delighted to announce that Tony Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth, who appeared as Annie Draper in Goodspeed’s production of Strike Up The Band, will be the latest recipient of The Goodspeed Award for Outstanding Contribution to Musical Theatre at its Gala on August 11, 2012. Previous honorees include Julie Andrews, Martin Charnin, Ira Gershwin, Jerry Herman, William Ivey Long, Thomas Meehan, Michael P. Price, Gerald Schoenfeld, Stephen Schwartz, Susan Stroman, Charles Strouse, Tommy Tune and Paul Williams. Emmy and Tony Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth effortlessly transitions between stage, television and film with the captivating grace that only she can project. Many remember her show-stealing, Tony-winning performance in You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown and her triumphant star turn when she originated the role of Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked, which earned her a Tony Award nomination. Kristin was most recently seen on Broadway as Fran Kubelik in the revival of Promises, Promises starring alongside Sean Hayes at the Broadway Theatre. Other stage credits include the Encores! productions Music in the Air and Stairway to Paradise, The Apple Tree at Roundabout Theatre Company and Steel Pier. Ms. Chenoweth has explored numerous and diverse roles for television including “Pushing Daisies” for which she received an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, “Glee”, “The West Wing” and guest judge on “American Idol”. In addition Kristin has played Marian Paroo in ABC’s movie version of Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man. This spring, Chenoweth will star in the new ABC show “GCB” as Darlene, alongside Leslie Bibb and Annie Potts. On the big screen she has appeared in such films as Deck the Halls with Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick, RV with Robin Williams, Bewitched with Nicole Kidman, Running with Scissors with Annette Bening, and The Pink Panther with Steve Martin. The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance
Gordon 1 Jessica Gordon 29 March 2010 Honors Thesis Everything was Beautiful at the Ballet: The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance During the mid-1860s, a ballet troupe from Paris was brought to the Academy of Music in lower Manhattan. Before the company’s first performance, however, the theatre in which they were to dance was destroyed in a fire. Nearby, producer William Wheatley was preparing to begin performances of The Black Crook, a melodrama with music by Charles M. Barras. Seeing an opportunity, Wheatley conceived the idea to combine his play and the displaced dance company, mixing drama and spectacle on one stage. On September 12, 1866, The Black Crook opened at Niblo’s Gardens and was an immediate sensation. Wheatley had unknowingly created a new American art form that would become a tradition for years to come. Since the first performance of The Black Crook, dance has played an important role in musical theatre. From the dream ballet in Oklahoma to the “Dance at the Gym” in West Side Story to modern shows such as Movin’ Out, dance has helped tell stories and engage audiences throughout musical theatre history. Dance has not always been as integrated in musicals as it tends to be today. I plan to examine the moments in history during which the role of dance on the Broadway stage changed and how those changes affected the manner in which dance is used on stage today. Additionally, I will discuss the important choreographers who have helped develop the musical theatre dance styles and traditions. As previously mentioned, theatrical dance in America began with the integration of European classical ballet and American melodrama.

They're also the reasons the Broadway legend, recording artist, and TV star almost retired in her thirties. Photograph by Michael Larsen The performer says light, even from a smartphone's tiny camera, can bring on a migraine with aura—a temporary visual loss or disturbance—intense nausea, and crippling head pain, as well as room-spinning vertigo. Now 51, Chenoweth has battled these symptoms half her life. Her first attack happened mid-performance with the Virginia Symphony when she was 25. She lost peripheral vision and saw strobing flashes, or what she refers to as "kaleidoscope eyes." The viselike head pain that followed left her "crawling off the stage," she says, only to retreat to her hotel room. There, she vomited repeatedly and experienced extreme light sensitivity and dizziness, even as the worst headache of her life did not abate for days. "I didn't know what hit me," says Chenoweth, who is readying for the release of For the Girls, her seventh album, with an all-star roster of female singers including Ariana Grande, Dolly Parton, and Reba McIntire.
