Date Plan Published: December 2011 Commissioned by Central Otago District Council Prepared by Robin Miller MNZIBS MRICS Origin Consultants Ltd August 2018 Architecture Heritage Archaeology Origin Consultants Ltd Rear of 38 Buckingham Street, Arrowtown & Level 4, Security Buildings, 115 Stuart Street, Dunedin Review of existing conservation plans for Clyde Museums Project Building: Clyde Railway Station Date of conservation plan: December 2011 Brief history: • Opened on 2nd April 1907 as a Troup Type B station. • Construction of the railway began on 7th June 1878 with an estimated construction duration of 6 years to reach Wanaka – the line actually reached Cromwell in 1921 where it stopped. • The station serviced the fruit industry and the demand for excursion trains, but suffered from competition from road transport, particularly from 1960 onwards. The 1980 station on the outskirts of the town was built to serve the construction of the Clyde dam; the engineering works to which closed the line to Cromwell and the 1907 station. After that, the line between Middlemarch to Clyde was abandoned completely in 1990. • Apart from the station and a short section of line, a few former railway houses remain nearby, together with the goods shed that was relocated to the adjacent Briar Herb Factory Museum site. • In 1997, the station was registered as a Category II Historic Place (Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga) and it is also a protected building in the CODC District Plan. Summary of findings: • The station building has high heritage significance on both a local & regional basis. -

Executive summary The Taieri Plains is a low-lying alluvium-filled basin, approximately 210km2 in size. Bound to the north and south by an extensive fault system, it is characterised by gentle sloping topography, which grades from an elevation of about 40m in the east, to below mean sea level in the west. At its lowest point (excluding drains and ditches), it lies about 1.5m below mean sea level, and has three significant watercourses crossing it: the Taieri River, Silver Stream and the Waipori River. Lakes Waipori and Waihola mark the plain’s western boundary and have a regulating effect on drainage for the western part of the plains. The Taieri Plains has a complex natural-hazard setting, influenced by the combination of the natural processes that have helped shape the basin in which the plain rests, and the land uses that have developed since the mid-19th century. -

Knowing the precarious state of suitable steam coal which faces those operating large or network locos, I thought the attached article from the Grey Star, 6 Nov 2015, should be circulated amongst members who may need to contact their local supplier as regards a future supply. With the apparent demise of the Cascade Mine the preferred and often only suitable steam coal, the choices to my knowledge are limited to; Strongman - very limited production, Redale, Reefton - a limited scale opencast operation with equally limited future and Garveys Ck, Reefton - well known for destroying grates. There may be some medium heat coals from couple of small mines in the Reefton area and of course the well known Mai Mai lignite and that is it. Any members are welcome to contact me but best they contact their favourite supplier with a copy of the newspaper cutting. CORRECTION—AGAIN!! We will be in Wellington where our host group will be Steam Incorporated. Our conference venue will be the West Plaza Hotel at 110 Wakefield St in the city. Selected so we are handy to the night life nearby for those that want to enjoy the social side of our time. So far our plans include: Friday 1 June: An afternoon visit to the Wheelwright Shop at Gladstone in the Wairarapa. Visitors can take a scheduled train from Wellington where we will have a coach transfer us to and from Carterton to Gladstone, followed by return train from Carterton. Saturday 2 June: Conference sessions all day with a free evening. Sunday 3 June: Morning conference session and in the afternoon we will travel by coach to visit some of our members sites (including host group Steam Incorporated) in the Kapiti area. Monday 4 June (Queen’s Birthday Holiday): Coach to the Hutt Valley where we will visit more member sites before re- turning to Wellington and the airport for visitors to fly home. Our briefing paper included an introduction to FRONZ, including our past challenges and achievements. More importantly, we also discussed the challenges we currently face which were; • Covid 19 recovery • Environmental uncertainty • Crewing mainline excursions and certainty of operation • Upkeep of heritage infrastructure • Escalating compliance costs • Uncertainty of funding • Knowledge transfer to younger generations We felt the Minister was fully engaged with us throughout the meeting. He made reference to having three sons and having taken them out to GVR Thomas days a few times when they were younger. He also said his grandfather worked his whole life on the railways, and his mother grew up in a railway house. He gave the impression of having a natural affiliation with the railways. Overall, we thought the meeting had achieved the purpose of making the Minister aware of FRONZ and the importance of the rail heritage movement. On the same day we also met with senior Kiwirail staff to discuss mainline running issues. KiwiRail now certainly appear very engaged with supporting heritage and are putting in place the right people to help move things forward. -
