The primary focus of the plot, however, is a fictional future game entitled Space Quest XII: Vohaul's Revenge II, in which a computerized copy of the mind of twice-defeated villain Sludge Vohaul takes over the master control computer of Roger's home planet Xenon, and promptly conquers the planet, rendering it a post-apocalyptic wasteland. This collection presents not just the collected tales of the Space Quest saga, but also provides an example of the evolution of computer entertainment software since the earlt,J dat,Js of PC gaming. As t,JOU review ear/1,1 works of the Space Quest series, please remember that t,JOU are looking at what might be described as "digital antiques" from the earlt,J dat,Js of personal computing. Innovations like mice and music cards, which are widelv used todav, were not vet available in the earlv and mid 1980's. Thus earlv Space Quest games will not support them. We hope that vou will enjot,J these games in the same nostalgic spirit as t,JOU would a classic black and white movie. While thet,J mat,J lack some modem dot,J technological flair, thet,J have a unique qualitt,J all their own. It is also important to note that the Windows operating svstem was not found in homes during the 1980's. • Dear a & S, I Would Like to Reply to Lain Mackenzie's Letter in the Last Issue
SEPTEMBER 1993 Dear A & S, I would like to reply to lain Mackenzie's letter in the last issue. He claimed that my review of ULTIMA UNDERWORLD II was "very silly" because I had marked it down after finding a bug. This is not quite accurate, so I think I should set the record straight. Fi rstly, I did not refrain from awarding the game three stars because of the bug. I realise that this was the impression given by my review, but I'm afraid this comes down to the way my copy was edited. In the original copy there was no paragraph break before the sentence relating to the bug. The sentence which starts, "Consequently I have awarded UNDERWORLD II two stars rather than three," refers not just to the bug but to everything I mentioned in the previous paragraph as well. I am always extremely cautious when awarding a maximum score, and usually only give it to games which are ground-breaking or have something to offer which other games lack. UNDERWORLD II is very good, but does not meet those criteria. The first UNDERWORLD was sufficiently different to anything else around at the time to merit that mark, but the sequel is just more of the same. Remember also that there are many people to whom it does not appeal, and wouldn't consider it a "must in their collection." As for the bug itself, I found it very insulting that lain assumed that he knew what the bug was and passed judgement on that basis.
