ADDAMS FAMILY CONCERT VERSION Character Descriptions Addams Family Members Gomez Addams, Tenor: Gomez is an attractive man of Spanish descent, who adores his wife, Morticia. He takes great pride in his children, Wednesday & Pugsley. He is immensely proud to be an Addams. Wednesday has told her father that she is getting married, however, she has made him promise not to tell her mother until after the dinner party. Gomez and Morticia do not keep secrets from each other. He feels completely trapped having to keep his daughter happy by keeping her secret and keeping his wife happy by telling her what the secret is. Keeping them both happy is his greatest job. He must have great comedic timing, move well, and have strong vocals. Fencing skills a plus. Morticia Addams, Alto: She is beautiful and the real head of the family; the critical and moving force behind it. This role requires an easy comedic sense with a sexy, dry wit. She feels her husband, Gomez, is hiding something from her and will use any tactic to lure the secret out. Morticia must move and sing well. Wednesday Addams, Mezzo/Sop, Strong belt: Wednesday is the goth daughter of Gomez and Morticia. She is a charming girl who has the same dry wit and sensibility of her mother. Wednesday has fallen in love with a “normal” boy (Lucas) and to get married. She just wants her family to be “normal” for one night to meet Luca’s parents. She needs strong pop belt vocals and a good sense of sarcasm. Pugsley Addams, strong high vocals, Tenor (or Alto): Pugsley is a charming, funny, husky boy (or girl who can play a boy) who loves being tortured by his sister. He wants to ensure that he won’t lose his sister to her new boyfriend, so he takes matters into his own hands. Pugsley sings with energy and high strong vocals. He is usually shorter than his sister. Could be played by female. Uncle Fester Addams, Tenor: He is larger than life, Fester has an energetic, joyous, child-like presence. This character is a vaudeville style comedian with tenor vocals. He has a great sense of humor and a strong singing voice. Grandma, Alto or Soprano: Grandma is a feisty 102-year old woman. She is fun and quirky, but don’t mess with Grandma! She helps Pugsley through his problems and has a crass sense of humor. She has funny dialogue and sings with Addams family members. Must have a strong character voice that can carry off the comedy. Lurch, Bass: Lurch is the Addams family butler. He’s extremely tall and a man of very, very few words. He often grunts at half speed. Most of what he utters is long, plaintive groans, some tinged with irony or exasperation. He has many emotions, just not the words. Must have true low bass notes for his (surprise!) song at the end of the show. The Ancestors, Soprano, Alto and Baritone: Strong singer/movers that have a fun, quirky sensibility. Must be able to hold tight harmonies and portray historical archetypes. Several of the ancestors have solo singing and spoken lines. One Ancestor, Lupe, is used to set up scenes and continue the story. The Ancestors interact, sing or move in almost every scene. The Ancestors are not allowed to return to their graves until love triumphs for Lucas and Wednesday. Fester works with the Ancestors through the show. Beinecke (B-eye-nick-e) Family Members Mal Beinecke, Baritone/tenor: Mal is the stuffy father of Lucas and exasperated husband to his rhyming wife, Alice. He’s a suburban father that’s cynical of life and of the Addams family. He’s always looking out for his family, but he has difficulty accepting his reality and pretends to be better than others. At one time he was a follower of The Grateful Dead but has lost that side of himself. Mal has high baritone/tenor vocals. Alice Beinecke, Soprano/high belt: Alice is the wife of Mal and mother of Lucas. She appears to be a mousy housewife who’s devoted to her family and put aside her own desires. She is a suburban mom with a cold relationship with her husband Mal. Her focus is on her son, Lucas. When she gets upset, she speaks in rhymes. While at the Addams’ family dinner party, she mistakenly drinks a potion that causes her to let her hair down and speak her truth and let it all hang out. Alice is comedic with strong soprano/belt vocals. Lucas Beinecke, Pop Tenor: Lucas is an attractive young man. Son of Mal and Alice Beineke. He has fallen in love with Wednesday Addams and plans to marry her. He is experiencing the youthful pain and drama of young love and is struggling with the differences between his family and the Addams family. He writes poetry and appears to be a traditionalist, but he harbors an unexpected crazy and dark side and appreciates the macabre. That is why he gets along so well with the Addams Family. Lucas has a strong pop/rock voice. .
