Zoological Studies 2014, 53:22 http://www.zoologicalstudies.com/content/53/1/22 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Genetic variability and divergence of Neutrodiaptomus tumidus Kiefer 1937 (Copepoda: Calonida) among 10 subpopulations in the high mountain range of Taiwan and their phylogeographical relationships indicated by mtDNA COI gene Shuh-Sen Young1*, Yan-Ying Lee1 and Min-Yun Liu2 Abstract Background: In the mountain area of Taiwan, we investigated 10 subpopulations of Neutrodiaptomus tumidus Kiefer 1937 living in isolated alpine ponds or lakes. We used mitochondrial DNA cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI) sequence as molecular marker to investigate the population genetic structure and their phylogeographical relationships. Results: We obtained 179 sequences from 10 subpopulations and found 94 haplotypes. Nucleotide composition was AT-rich. Haplotype diversity (Hd) and nucleotide diversity (π) indicated significant genetic differences between subpopulations (Hd = 0.131 ~ 0.990; π = 0.0002 ~ 0.0084); genetic differentiation index (Fst) and gene flow index (Nm) also exhibited significant genetic diversification between subpopulations (Fst = 0.334 ~ 0.997; Nm =0~1).Using Tajima’s D and Fu and Li’s D*andF* as neutrality tests, we found that the nucleotide variation within the population was consistent with the neutral theory except in the JiaLuoHu subpopulation. The JiaLuoHu subpopulation significantly deviated from the neutral theory and was speculated to have experienced a bottleneck effect. According to the phylogenetic tree, these alpine lake subpopulations could be divided into four phylogroups (northern region, Xueshan group, central region, and southwestern region). Xueshan group contains one subpopulation, DuRongTan, which is a unique group relative to other groups. -

Protection and Transmission of Chinese Nanyin by Prof. Wang, Yaohua Fujian Normal University, China Intangible cultural heritage is the memory of human historical culture, the root of human culture, the ‘energic origin’ of the spirit of human culture and the footstone for the construction of modern human civilization. Ever since China joined the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2004, it has done a lot not only on cognition but also on action to contribute to the protection and transmission of intangible cultural heritage. Please allow me to expatiate these on the case of Chinese nanyin(南音, southern music). I. The precious multi-values of nanyin decide the necessity of protection and transmission for Chinese nanyin. Nanyin, also known as “nanqu” (南曲), “nanyue” (南乐), “nanguan” (南管), “xianguan” (弦管), is one of the oldest music genres with strong local characteristics. As major musical genre, it prevails in the south of Fujian – both in the cities and countryside of Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou – and is also quite popular in Taiwan, Hongkong, Macao and the countries of Southeast Asia inhabited by Chinese immigrants from South Fujian. The music of nanyin is also found in various Fujian local operas such as Liyuan Opera (梨园戏), Gaojia Opera (高甲戏), line-leading puppet show (提线木偶戏), Dacheng Opera (打城戏) and the like, forming an essential part of their vocal melodies and instrumental music. As the intangible cultural heritage, nanyin has such values as follows. I.I. Academic value and historical value Nanyin enjoys a reputation as “a living fossil of the ancient music”, as we can trace its relevance to and inheritance of Chinese ancient music in terms of their musical phenomena and features of musical form. -

However, little is known about the adaptive interactions between Taiwanese foragers and Neolithic Chinese farmers during the transition. This paper considers theoretical expectations from human behavioral ecology based models and macroecological patterning from Binford’s hunter-gatherer database to scope the range of responses of native populations to invasive dispersal. Niche variation theory and invasion theory predict that the foraging niche breadths will narrow for native populations and morphologically similar dispersing populations. The encounter contingent prey choice model indicates that groups under resource depression from depleted high-ranked resources will increasingly take low-ranked resources upon encounter. The ideal free distribution with Allee effects categorizes settlement into highly ranked habitats selected on the basis of encounter rates with preferred prey, with niche construction potentially contributing to an upswing in some highly ranked prey species. In coastal plain habitats preferred by farming immigrants, interactions and competition either reduced encounter rates with high ranked prey or were offset by benefits to habitat from the creation of a mosaic of succession ecozones by cultivation. Aquatic-focused foragers were eventually constrained to broaden subsistence by increasing the harvest of low ranked resources, then mobility-compatible Neolithic cultigens were added as a niche-broadening tactic. -

In order to deal with the negative effect of ecological environment caused by the rapid urbanization process, much more attention has been paid to urban ecological parks with the functions such as restoring urban natural ecological environment, building sustainable stable ecosystems, improving biodiversity and spreading ecological culture. On the basis of explaining the concept of urban ecological parks, this paper sums up the ecological strategies of the restoration case of Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park and Kallang River in Singapore, and puts forward ecological strategies of urban ecological parks in the aspects of planning, design and maintenance, involving site selection, layout, planting, techniques, facilities, education and management. The rapid urbanization process has caused much more [1, 2]. With the main goal of protecting or building serious ecological environmental degeneration while regional diverse self-succession ecosystems, urban promoting rapid economic growth and improving ecological parks are able to effectively alleviate the people’s living standards, which is in conflict with the contradiction between the development of people’s living high requirements of living environmental quality and standards and much more serious ecological ecological environmental conservation. The names also reflect the beliefs and religion of Singapore Chinese. More significantly, a change of identity and representation is reflected in the names of earlier settlers and Singapore Chinese today. This paper aims to show the general naming traditions of Chinese in Singapore as well as a change in ideology and trends due to globalization. 8 Why Does the United States Care about Taiwan? I sincerely hope that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait can seize this historic opportunity to achieve peace and co-prosperity. Under the prin- ciple of ‘no unification, no independence and no use of force,’ as Taiwan’s mainstream public opinion holds it, and under the framework of the ROC [Republic of China] Constitution, we will maintain the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. In resolving cross-strait issues, what matters is not sovereignty but core values and way of life. —Ma Ying-jeou, presidential inaugural address, Taipei, May 21, 2008 Taiwan has long been the most sensitive issue in US-China relations and likely will remain so for many years to come.1 The impasse across the Tai- wan Strait serves as one of the most dangerous flashpoints in the world, the one issue that could lead to military conflict at a moment’s notice be- tween the United States and China today. China is fond of calling this matter a remnant of China’s civil war and a relic of the Cold War. Indeed it is. However, the issue has evolved sub- stantially from this historical context over the years, making the Taiwan impasse in some ways even more relevant and immediate today than ever. Many in the United States and elsewhere may reasonably ask why the United States cares so much about this island off China’s coast and why Washington remains committed to it when this commitment could lead to war not only with a nuclear weapons state but also with the world’s most important rising power.
