    Chaucer, St Loy, and the Celts Andrew Breeze University of Navarre, Pampiona Although St Loy the smith was one of the popular saints of late medieval Europe, the British evidence for his legend has never been full y described. In its common form the legend tells how St Loy, while working as a blacksmith, calmed a dangerously rearing horse (believed possessed by the Devil) with the sign of the cross, cut off its leg, shod the leg, and then attached it to the horse again without ill effect. This story was known to Chaucer and St Thomas More, both of whom allude to the saint's power with horses. Other references to the legend in Britain occur in sources as diverse as English art, Welsh poetry, and Protestant polemic. However, in spite of its popularity, this story has been neglected by Anglicists and others, perhaps because it existed almost entirely in oral form. There certainly seems to be no narrative written version of it in medieval British sources. In fact the oral nature of the legend receives striking confinnation from modern Irish and Scottish Gaelic folklore, where the account of the miraculous shoeing. without mention of St Loy, forms the first part of the tale Gabha an (Suic, 'The Smith of the Ploughshare'. Over the last hundred years or so this story has been coll ected from most parts of Ireland by folklore scholars, as well as in a Scottish Gaelic version from Tifee in the Inner Hebrides. We can assume that the tale of the miraculous shoeing was as familiar in medieval English spoken tradition as it has been in the spoken tradition of modem Gaelic communities.

    Benefice of the Wiske 1 THE DIOCESE The Anglican Diocese of Leeds comprises five Episcopal Areas, each coterminous with an Archdeaconry. This is now the largest diocese in the country, and its creation is unprecedented in the history of the Church of England. It covers an area of around 2,425 square miles, and a population of around 2,642,400 people. The three former dioceses were created in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to cater for massive population changes brought about by industrialisation and, later mass immigration. An update on these matters is provided at paragraphs 5.43 – 5.52. 1.2 The location is approximately half way between Great Smeaton and East Cowton. The development site consists of two parcels of land, totalling 40 hectares, north of the Great Smeaton - East Cowton road. The wider site includes a cable route between the sites, two temporary construction compounds and an access track.     Our Ref SGB/AB Nathan Puckering Hambleton District Council Civic Centre Stone Cross Northallerton North Yorkshire DL6 2UU 12th November 2019 Dear Mr Puckering Re: Proposed Enclosure of Registered Village Green, Great Smeaton, DL6 2EP 19/02204/LBC I write further to the above listed building consent application which you have received from the occupant of East House, Great Smeaton who is seeking to enclose and obstruct part of the Great Smeaton registered Village Green (VG127). On behalf of the Parochial Church Council of Great Smeaton with Appleton Wiske, within the Wiske Benefice of Leeds Diocese, I wish to register a formal objection to this application. The proposal is contrary to Section 12 of the Inclosure Act 1857 and contrary to Section 29 of the Commons Act 1876. The former gives rise to a criminal offence and the latter makes it a statutory public nuisance to fence in a registered green. North Yorkshire County Council as the appropriate commons registration authority for the area have confirmed the fact that the area in question constitutes registered Village Green and therefore having regard to the above Acts and Sections, it is clear that it would be unlawful for the Council to entertain the applications proposed. It is my understanding that it would be ultra vires for the Council to seek to grant planning permission for this proposal. From a procedural perspective, we also believe that the application is defective in terms of its depiction of the correct state of land ownership. We consider that the ownership has not been correctly identified – the red line needs to enclose only that area of land affected by the proposals but more importantly a blue line should be clearly delineated showing other land which is within the ownership of the applicant.
