Stephen Carpenter, II Dr. Patrick Slattery This study examined the intentions of a group of individuals who created the sitcom Aliens in America broadcast on the CW Network in 2007-2008 and the ways in which three separate groups (bloggers, TV critics and local television viewers) perceived the show. In doing so I attempted to uncover the pedagogical implications of these intentions and perceptions for visual culture studies. I used a qualitative approach to conduct this study. I gathered interviews the creators of the show gave to media outlets in 2007 and 2008. -

This is the first in a series of articles about the “first paying jobs” of successful people and their advice for today’s teens. Born in London in 1944, after his family fled the Holocaust, Springer immigrated at age 5 to New York City with his family. For Springer and his family, America represented a place where people could live without persecution. No doubt Springer’s upbringing and first job as a teen set the tone for his future success. Ward: What was your first paying job and how old were you? Springer: You’re asking about a long time ago like back in the 1950’s. I delivered newspapers, the Long Island Press on my bicycle. I had to get up at a ridiculously early hour, go to the printing press and load up my bike basket and off I went. It was the first job where I actually got paid. I was so excited about it but it was never fun when the alarm went off at about 4 o’clock in the morning before I had to go to school. I must have been about 13 or 14 years old. Yep, that’s what I did. Ward: How did you learn about this job? Springer: Through a friend. -

This thesis aims to qualitatively analyze Maury’s trashy televised depictions of the American underclass, and understand the differences between depictions of the American underclass based on immersive investigation and the way that Maury depicts the American underclass on a daytime trash-televised format. -

It looks at how changes in the U.C telecommunications industxy contributed to the proliferation of these types of prograrns, due to their lower production costs. The author argues that, while the rise of trash talk shows can be traced back to the economic imperatives which drive American business practices, talk shows should also be looked at as cultural texts which reflect a certain world view. -

Tancred THE FACTS The Jerry Springer Show is syndicated in the Canadian market and plays at different times in different cities across the country. In the markets affected by this decision and in the relevant time frame related to the following complaints, the show aired at 2 p.m. on CIHF- TV in Halifax/Dartmouth and at 5 p.m. on CKMI-TV in Montreal. The five episodes watched by the Atlantic and Quebec Regional Councils are sufficiently structurally similar to permit some generalized observations regarding the show. In the view of the two Councils, the show deals primarily with relationships in which there is a personal issue to be resolved, with some emphasis on the bizarre. Nor is there any lofty purpose to be attributed to the word “relationship” for, generally speaking, relationship, in this context, signifies sexual relationship and the public revelation of such matters as −2− cheating, threesomes, and behaviour of less than broad social acceptance. More specifically, in the episodes in question, this involved sexual issues such as adults sleeping with the partners of their children, unfaithfulness, cheaters cheating on their cheating partners, disturbing secrets, and prostitution; these invoked feelings of jealousy, hatred, bitterness and nastiness, often at an intense level. -

Biographies: Peter Lunt and Paul Stenner are both social psychologists at University College London. Peter Lunt’s research interests are in the psychology of the media audience, consumption and the relationship between social psychology and social theory. His previous publications on talk shows include Talk on Television (with Sonia Livingstone). Paul Stenner’s research interests focus on the social construction of the emotions and the philosophy and history of psychology. He was a member of the Beryl Curt group of critical social psychologists who published Textuality and Tectonics. 1 The Jerry Springer Show as an Emotional Public Sphere Abstract The public sphere debate in social theory has been a topic of considerable interest amongst scholars analysing the talk show genre. Habermas (1989) attached great importance to the potential of rational critical discussion to create consensus and thereby legitimation in democratic society. He was concerned that the media gave a false impression of engagement in a public sphere while managing rights of access and speech in a manner that was inimical to open public discussion. -

We give ‘em what they want.” Actor Richard Dawson, as a game show host, in The Running Man (1987, US, Paul Michael Glaser) Television has changed the perceptual base of Western culture and has profoundly influenced the development of other mass media popular arts. It has also changed the avant- garde. The structure and icon function of television programming will be discussed in this chapter. The next chapter will discuss television commercials. Chapter 10: Television 2 The main reason for the cultural and artistic impact of television is easy to identify: for the first time in Western history, the primary source of culture-building images is located within the home itself. Television has produced images ranging from the Felix the Cat doll (10.1) used in NBC’s experimental broadcasts before World War II to the live shots of an American setting foot on the surface of the moon (10.2) to belated scenes of the invasion of Grenada to images of the 2003 war with Iraq such as the one of a Saddam Hussein statue discussed at the very beginning of this book (10.3). -

Whiting* * Since Madeline Ziniak, who customarily sits on the Ontario Regional Council, is employed by the broadcaster in question, she did not participate in the resolution of this matter. THE FACTS The episode of the Jerry Springer Show in question, entitled “I’m Dumping My Lover!”, aired at 10 pm on June 9, 1999 on CFMT-TV (Toronto). It was preceded by the following on- screen viewer advisory: “The Jerry Springer Show may contain adult themes or strong language. Parents are cautioned that this program may not be appropriate for children.” It should be noted, in the opening words to the decision regarding this episode, that, unlike the case of episodes dealt with by the Atlantic and Quebec Regional Councils in CIHF-TV and CKMI-TV re The Jerry Springer Show (CBSC Decision 97/98-1277, May 28, 1999), this episode contained no physical violence component whatsoever. As is customary, the various guests on this episode of the show had sexual or relationship stories to recount. Since the accounts of three of the four guests were neither the subject of the complaint nor raised any particular concerns for the Regional Council, they will not be described here or dealt with in the decision. Suffice it to say that they generally raise bizarre, abnormal and antisocial behaviour patterns on the part of the show's guests.
