he craftsmanship and extensive use of millwork in the Sansum Clinic Medical and Surgical Center in Santa Barbara caught the attention of Woodwork TInstitute awards judges in 2015. Not just once, but twice.

Dennis Reeves, Inc., and Boulder Associates Architects earned dual honors in receiving Woodwork Institute’s Ralph B. McClure Craftsmanship Award and the Bernard B. Barber Jr. Award for Excellence for their work on the Sansum Clinic in Santa Barbara, California.

About the Awards

he McClure Craftsmanship Award honors exceptional Tcraftsmanship and/or installation of architectural millwork by a Woodwork Institute Affiliate. Awards date back to 1994. In 2003, the program eliminated the separate awards classifications such as installation, wood and overall millwork, and instead began recognizing up to three finalists each year and selecting the top project for the award.

Any Woodwork Institute Accredited Millwork Company or employee may make a submittal, and the project specifications must require Certified or Monitored Compliance.

The Barber Award for Excellence honors design professionals for projects in which the interior or exterior architectural millwork is a predominant feature.

Interior or exterior areas are eligible; awards are not limited to any specific category of building or any specific areas within the structure. Applications may be submitted by any design professional or Woodwork Institute Affiliate that was contractually tied to the project; however, project specifications must require Certified or Monitored Compliance.

20 Archetype | FALL 2016 Why NOT an ANSI standard for architectural millwork?

he Architectural Woodwork Institute is currently unilaterally pursuing the development of ANSI standards for millwork.

The Woodwork Institute (WI) and the T Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada (AWMAC), wanting to build on the foundation of the Architectural Woodwork Standards rather than displace it, chose to create the new North American Architectural Woodwork Standards.

The Architectural Woodwork Standard — developed in concert by AWI, WI and AWMAC — provided guidance not only for basic woodwork, but also for the highest quality levels of fine architectural millwork. While it is important to have a standard that sets criteria for the fabrication/ installation of solid, functional and well-crafted millwork, it is equally essential to have one that details higher levels of quality fabrication and installation when the millwork will be a primary focal feature of a room, building, or space.

Because the ANSI process for developing standards must allow for openness, balance, due process, and consensus among all interested parties, it cannot, by its very nature, likely require settling on a lowest common denominator. result in a standard other than a minimum standard And if ANSI is the only standard, a design professional acceptable to all participants. seeking a higher standard for a project would have to • Openness means everyone with an interest can create their own. participate. The Woodwork Institute is dedicated to elevating the quality • Balance means the interests of all parties are taken of architectural millwork throughout the industry by having into account equally. one comprehensive woodwork standard that can be relied • Due process means everyone has a chance to review — upon to provide standards for every level of project that and object to — the standards at every step. incorporates architectural woodwork.

• Consensus means that everyone agrees to the final Instead of participating in a consensus-built lowest- standards. common-denominator standard, WI and AWMAC have Consensus is the greatest weakness of the process and the chosen to enhance the previous industry-wide standard stumbling block toward developing a higher standard. If by producing the North American Architectural Woodwork there are too many competing voices with personal agendas Standard.
