Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 3 Estate George James Howden George Howden, a Life Member and long‑time Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club supporter, passed away in March 2007. In his Will, he gave our Club a generous bequest of S20,000. He also instructed Trustees Executors Ltd to set up a Deed of Arrangement with the BWUCC to utilise the “residual” funds from his Estate, and invest them to provide a long‑term income stream for the Club. Carrying out George’s wishes took some time, as did the granting of “Charitable” status for the Estate. The Club at all times needs to be aware that the initial bequest and all subsequent income generated under the Deed of Arrangement, may only be utilised by the Club for the following purposes : (a) The provision of coaching services at all grades. (b) The maintenance, upkeep and improvement of the grounds upon which the Club’s activities are centred or take place. (c) The provision of or improvement to the facilities and amenities of the Club. (d) The general betterment of the Club as a whole, and the promotion of its interests. To ensure the income is so paid or applied in accordance with the terms of the Trust, it is a requirement that at all times there is an Advisory Committee of three persons who must give prior approval. The first persons to hold office are Graham Thorne Dowling, Brian Charles Adams, and Grant James Dickson. They, in conjunction with Trustees Executors, have since 27 November 2009 embarked on a “conservative growth portfolio” strategy, that we believe is in the best long‑term interests of our Club. At each balance date annual accounts are prepared by Trustees Executors and, once approved by the Advisory Committee, the net income, after setting aside a set percentage to add to the Trust Capital, is remitted to the Club. All unexpended funds are then held by the Club’s solicitors, quite separate from our Club’s general finances.

Present John Thompson (Chair), Paul O’Flaherty (Secretary), Peter Vorster (Treasurer), Graham Dowling, Brian Hastings, Brian Adams, Tony Feely, Paul O’Grady, Stephen Jeffery, Julie Noster, Rob Noster, Derek Cockburn, Bryce McKenzie, Grant Dickson, Jerard Cross, Ryan Cutts, Lee McKenzie, Nook Ebert, Alan Alty, Ashley Taggart. John Thompson welcomed all members, and particularly life members, to the meeting. Apologies J Rea, M Hastings, P Burke, M Phillips, C Kennedy. Acceptance of these apologies was moved by John Thompson and seconded by Paul O’Flaherty. Carried. Confirmation of Minutes, AGM, 23 August 2009 Amendments to be made were noted as follows: In the Subscriptions section, the sentence “L McKenzie moved that subscriptions for the 2009/10 season be the same as those for the 2010/11 season”, should read “L McKenzie moved that subscriptions for the 2009/10 season be the same as those for the 2008/09 season”; Paul O’Grady, who attended the 2009 AGM, was omitted from the minutes; Stephen Jeffery’s name was misspelt; Acceptance of these changes and confirmation of the minutes was moved by Paul O’Grady and seconded by Peter Vorster. Carried. Adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet John Thompson highlighted the developments on the field in the club since last year, including the existence of a new women’s team, for which he thanked Julie Noster, and a second grade team in the T20 competition. His view was that the overall season was a good one, including some positive news off the field. The club’s playing strength has increased, including the development of a young senior side with potential. One downside is that a senior coach has been signed up for the 2010/11 season, but has withdrawn at the last minute; alternative

6 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club solutions will need to be quickly put in place for this if the club is to achieve its aim this year of winning a Premier competition. The second grade team won their grade and should be wholeheartedly congratulated in this achievement. The afternoon grade teams have performed well but need to concentrate on more uniformity of dress. Junior cricket has continued to thrive, under the leadership of Peter Burke and Shane Eglington. Each junior player is now outfitted with a club cap and top. $20,000 has just been spent on repairing and upgrading the exterior of the pavilion, which is now in good shape. Peter Vorster commented on the financial accounts and reported an overall reasonably good year. He pointed out that there is some uncertainty about the split between subs and bar sales, given that some subs were paid by eftpos over the bar. Also, the amount of $5767 spent on gear and balls is slightly misleading in that a lot of gear used this year was purchased in the 08/09 year. Questions and discussion covered the level of funds gained from charitable trusts, the potential for funds from donors, the importance of accuracy in subscription gathering, the value of issuing invoices for subscriptions and the issuing of membership cards, and the level of financial support from Canterbury Cricket. Rob Noster acknowledged the considerable efforts of Peter Burke in raising funds from charitable trusts. John Thompson moved that the Annual Report and Financial Accounts be adopted as presented, and this was seconded by Graham Dowling. Carried. Membership Subscriptions Peter Vorster proposed the following subscription rates for the 2010/11 season: Junior $75 (from $60 in 2009/10) Two Juniors from the same family $130 (from $100) Junior Each Extra Child $30 (from $20) Senior Student $180 (from $165) Senior Woman $180 Senior Man $255 (from $240) Senior Team $2365 (from $2200) Youth subscriptions (Year 9 to Year 13) are set and administered by North-West Youth Cricket.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 7 Subscription levels have not changed since the beginning of the 2008/9 season and the proposed increases are intended to offset the likelihood of a more challenging charitable trust grant environment, the impending GST rise and the cost of inflation since the last subscription rise. John Thompson noted that annual costs for the club were approximately $100,000 and the level of subscriptions needs to cover about 20% of this. Peter Vorster moved that subscriptions be set at the above levels. This was co- seconded by Grant Dickson and Ryan Cutts. Election of Officers The following office holders were appointed for the 2010/11 season: Patron: Graham Dowling, nominated by John Thompson, seconded by Peter Cockburn; Chairman: John Thompson, nominated by Graham Dowling, seconded by Alan Alty; Secretary: Paul O’Flaherty, nominated by John Thompson, seconded by Brian Hastings; Treasurer: Peter Vorster, nominated by John Thompson, seconded by Julie Noster; Committee: Peter Burke, Henry Boyd, Lee McKenzie, Markham Lee, Rob Noster, Julie Noster, Alan Alty, Ashley Taggart, Brett Thomson. Nominated by Paul O’Flaherty, seconded by Graham Dowling; Delegates to the Canterbury Cricket Annual General Meeting: John Thompson, Ashley Taggart, Paul O’Flaherty, Peter Vorster. Nominated by John Thompson, seconded by Rob Noster; Auditor: Brian McCrorie. Nominated by John Thompson, seconded by Lee McKenzie; Solicitor: Stephen Jeffery. Nominated by Ashley Taggart, seconded by Paul O’Flaherty. John Thompson notified his intention to stand down as Chairman after the coming season. He thanked committee members Chris Kennedy, Shane Eglington and Geoff Boorer, who are not standing again as committee members, for their contributions to the club. He also acknowledged Nook Ebert for the job has done as groundsman. John Thompson called for three or four replacement nominees for the committee. When none were forthcoming, he advised that the committee would look to co-opt new members during the season.

8 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club General Business A proposal by Alan Alty to shift from public notification of Club AGMs to notification online did not go further, due in part to the need to move an amendment to the club constitution at least 21 days in advance of an AGM. Members’ view was that it might be a matter for next year’s AGM; Alan Alty also floated the idea of four honorary membership levels, noting that honorary membership levels have not moved for about twenty years. Members view was that this concept needed more work and discussion before being brought back to a future AGM; Paul O’Flaherty outlined the process of and reasons for developing the club’s Strategic Plan, and thanked those members who has contributed to the beginnings of the plan via a workshop after last year’s AGM; John Thompson previewed the 2010/11 season, noting the potential difficulties caused by the 4 September 2011 earthquake e.g. burst water pipes on Burnside Oval, the level of commitments that the City Council currently has which might prevent timely repair and maintenance work, and by the recent inclement weather. There will be no club open day to start the season and the first week of the season is in doubt; Tony Feely noted that the statistics for the Premier team were absent from the Annual Report. The committee apologised for this oversight. Brian Adams moved that this season’s and any available historical statistics be made available on the club’s website and that the season’s statistics be noted as part of the club’s annual report. Tony Feely seconded. Carried; Nook Ebert observed that the covers and scrim for the Premier and 2A team’s pitches were in poor condition and noted the requirement for these grades to have adequate covers or risk loss of competition points. John Thompson advised that new covers and scrim has been ordered and would be delivered in a matter of days. The meeting closed at 12.46 pm.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 17 AUDITOR’S REPORT

I have audited the attached financial report, The financial report provides information about the past financial performance of the Club and its financial position as at 30 April 2011. The information is stated in accordance with the accounting policies. Committee Responsibilities The Committee is responsible for the preparation of the financial report, which fairly reflects the financial position of the Club as at 30 April 2011 and of the result of its operations for the year ended on that date. Auditor’s Responsibilities It is my responsibility to express an independent opinion on the financial report presented by the Committee and report my opinion to you. Basis of Opinion An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence relative to the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. It also includes assessing: • the significant estimates and judgements made by the Committee in the presentation and preparation of the financial report • whether the accounting policies are appropriate to the Club’s circumstances, consistently applied and adequately disclosed. I conducted the audit in accordance with the New Zealand Auditing Standards. I planned and performed my audit so as to obtain all the information and explanations which I considered necessary in order to provide me with sufficient evidence to give reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free from any misstatements, whether caused by fraud or error. In forming my opinion I also evaluated the overall adequacy of the presentation of information in the financial statements. Other than in my capacity as auditor I have no relationship with, or any interest in, the Club.

18 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club Qualified Opinion In common with other organisations of a similar nature, control over revenues from the various activities prior to its being recorded is limited and there are no practical audit procedures to determine the effects of the limited control. In this respect alone, I have not obtained all the information and explanations I have required. In my opinion, except for adjustments that might have been necessary had I been able to obtain sufficient evidence concerning various sources of income, the financial report reflects the operations of the Club for the year ended 30 April 2011. In my opinion, the attached financial report reflects the financial position of the Club as at 30 April 2011. My audit was completed on 9 August 2011 and my qualified opinion is expressed as at that date. B. A. McCrorie Chartered Accountant (retired) Christchurch

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 19 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT History will determine the overall effect on both our Club and the whole of Canterbury following the disastrous events of 2010–11. I refer of course to the series of ground- shattering earthquakes that have rocked this city and environs and completely changed the outlook of many people and of course the landscape. The Burnside Oval suffered little damage apart from some to the entranceway for the changing rooms which will be covered by our insurance. Heavy breakages occurred upstairs but all replaceable – in time. Other clubs have not been so lucky. So to cricket: A most disjointed season, culminating in the non-completion of our Two-Day Competition in February and no more competitive cricket played in Christchurch this season. The season started on a bad note with our newly appointed coach withdrawing a week before cricket started. This left our club in a very vulnerable situation as Level 2 coaches are not readily available at short notice. At this point I would thank the great contribution given by our Premier Grade Ryan Cutts who willingly gave of his time under considerable duress. Ryan, a big thank you!. The club, on the whole had some good results, with many of our grade teams winning sections of their competitions with particular reference to both second and third grades’ success in the One-Day competition. A good quinella! All our sections, women, youth, junior and men’s are in reasonable strength with regards to playing numbers but our playing strength can always be improved. The facilities at Burnside are, we think, the best in and around Christchurch. Four good blocks and good grass practice facilities help in the running of our club with thanks to Nook Ebert for his good efforts in this area. Financially, our club battled through all the major disturbances that were thrown at us and we will enter into next season in a sound financial position. Peter Vorster, our money man, kept a good rein on finances and cash flow which enabled our season to end in positive mode. Thanks to our committee for their tireless efforts throughout this taxing season. A special thanks to Taggers who has spent countless hours on all matters pertaining to cricket; his knowledge is invaluable in discussions with CCA Administration in particular. As this is my last year as Chairman (too old and grumpy), I would like to think that I leave the Club in good shape both in spirit and strength. Wishing our club the best in 2011–12 and beyond. THE SEASON FROM HELL is over! J. F. Thompson (Chairman)

20 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club In the hope that no more Earthquakes GROUNDS REPORT occur before this report goes to print I submit the following résumé of BWUCC season. In any given season there are many facets that determine success and /or failure of a cricket club. This past year we encountered many problems most of which were overcome but not without ongoing logistical factors. Whether our club gets through the next season unscathed remains the great unknown! Our Senior blocks (four) all played reasonably well with and Second. Grade mini-tournaments hosted successfully. Good totals were achieved by both club and opposition teams with bounce and carry being generally consistent. The practice block stood up to the rigours of usage – sometimes four or five days a week for almost six months of the year. Junior strips around the perimeter of the Oval also withstood the pressures of constant use and the Juniors enjoyed playing on pacey grass . Renovation work normally carried out in late summer /early autumn could not be finalised this year due to the unavailability of Heathcote soil and the lack of trucks and machinery to mill the clay. This may have a detrimental effect later this year. There was however good work done on both Block No. 1 and the practice strip with topdressing, scarifying, seeding and fertilising carried out to a high level. Our thanks to Nook Ebert for his efforts last season – unfortunatley his services will not be available this season as he is required at Fletchers to help our many homeless citizens and wrecked buildings. Plant and Machinery: although we possess reasonably reliable equipment, repairs and maintenance continue to eat away at our reserves. I make reference to scrim, pegs(metal) and covers. These are the responsibility of the players, not the ground staff. Please ensure, after use that they are removed from the ground and placed under cover! Our club will require a 10-bladed reel mower this season as our block mower is showing signs of over-usage and is not doing as good a job as previously. So, all in all, we are in reasonable shape by comparison to other clubs – hopefully no further damage will occur around Christchurch and we will have an enjoyable forthcoming season. J. F. Thompson (Convenor)

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 21 Unfortunately our Pavilion has been yellow- PAVILION REPORT stickered for some four to five months due to some minor damage to the changing rooms. This is being assessed at the moment but is not on the priority list of the Christchurch City Council. Many breakages occurred during the February earthquake and our insurance assessor has been informed and a report will be forthcoming for both replacement and repair. This had the effect of showing a smaller than expected profit from the bar. This will be reversed in next year’s figures. In the meantime renovations to the kitchen are still high on the list of priorities. As you would be aware, no pavilion hires have taken place over the winter due to the embargo on our pavilion. ROLL ON NEXT SEASON! J. F. Thompson (Convenor)

22 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club A season to forget that will always be PREMIER GRADE remembered… With a number of the senior squad and our newly-appointed coach all playing cricket in the Northern Hemisphere the decision was made to start our pre-season training later than usual on 4 September. This was also the morning Canterbury experienced its 7.1 magnitude earthquake which was centred in Darfield and damaged much of the city, including the Canterbury Cricket Association’s indoor training facilities. Training did commence a fortnight later but only two weeks before our first game. However of greater concern was that our coach had decided to take up another coaching role in Zimbabwe. For the first time the One-Day competition was to be completed before Christmas and our first game was against Riccarton on Hagley Park. Extremely rusty, the side was well beaten and it would have been a lot worse if Jordie Gibbens had not taken 32 off one over which was to be one of the individual highlights of the season. The team bounced back extremely well, beating the Canterbury Under-20 side, with the team chasing down the total within 20 overs. This was to be their only loss in winning the Senior One-Day Competition on the first occasion Canterbury Cricket involved them, which I believe was a great initiative. The side then travelled out to Rangiora and posted 280 against a very good Canterbury Country team, but this is where things started to unravel. Canterbury Country easily chased down the total and what followed were losses against Lancaster Park-Woolston, Old Boys-Collegians, Marist-Harewood and St Albans. During this period there were strong individual performances, but the team never played anywhere near its full potential. The two-day competition followed a similar trend to last season, where we would dominate teams for long periods and, with the finish line seemingly in sight, not be able to deliver the killer-blow. With only half of the games in the two-day competition completed, the season was abruptly ended on 22 February due to the 6.3 earthquake that will change Christchurch forever. Individually the was held together by the consistent Carl Huyser and Steve McKean as well as the brilliance of Tom Latham who registered two centuries after Christmas. Mark Harding was our top taker in the one-day competition, while Scott Inglis took that honour in the two-day competition. We also had three players in representative teams, with Richard Sherlock and Tom Latham playing for the Wizards and Tom and Matt Farrant playing for the Canterbury Under-23 Team at the National Tournament.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 23 Interestingly, the senior side used 21 players during the season, which is considerably higher than in past seasons. The young players coming into the team benefited greatly from their experiences and there was no bigger evidence of this than the Second Grade side going through the One-Day and Twenty20 Competitions unbeaten as well as the Third Grade side winning the One-Day Competition. This means that of the six trophies that were awarded for the completed competitions (One-Day and Twenty20 for the top three grades) BWCUCC won three and another was won by the Canterbury Under-20 team. The events of 22 February were a real wake-up call that life is short and can be taken away in a instant and that you should enjoy every minute while you can. Even though the season was extremely trying I would not trade it with anyone, due to the players who were involved in the Premier squad. I would like to thank all the players for their support as a captain, player, very reluctant “coach” and most of all as a friend. Ryan Cutts (Senior Captain)

Last year the Premier Grade statistics were unfortunately omitted from the Annual Report. In the interests of maintaining a complete historical record, the 2009–2010 statistics are printed on the following pages, followed by the statistics for the 2010–2011 season.

36 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club In my Second Grade Captain’s report SECOND GRADE 2A in the 2009/2010 Annual General Report I commented that following the team’s title-winning triumph in the two-day competition in that season and given the growing confidence and camaraderie of the team, that in the upcoming season the team would genuinely have the ability to win all three competitions – the One-day, Twenty20 and Two- day. Accordingly this goal was set for the 2010/2011 season. The season commenced in early October, with a One-day game against Riccarton on Burnside 1. After losing the toss and being put into bat we posted a competitive score in the low 200s. As a result of a disciplined bowling and fielding effort we bowled Riccarton out and were victorious by 26 runs. This victory was followed by an unbeaten through the round-robin phase of the one-day competition, where we completed dominant victories against LPW, Sydenham, OBC, East Shirley, St Albans and Marist. After finishing the round-robin phase in first place, we met the fourth-placed side, Riccarton, in our semi-final played on Burnside 1. Again batting first, we compiled a creditable total in the mid 200s. Following an aggressive early run chase from Riccarton, which had them sitting on 90 runs for the loss of one wicket after seven overs, we slowly built momentum and bowled Riccarton out in the late 100s. The following week we met LPW in the final, in what was our most one-sided game of the season. Again batting first we posted a total in excess of 400, with our opening batsman Tinus Huyser scoring 222, only being dismissed in the 37th over of our . Our total was always going to be too much for LPW, particularly after our opening bowler, Matt Latham dismissed their top order, finishing the game with a well deserved five wicket bag. Eventually we were victorious by the staggering margin of 281 runs. We opened the T20 competition with two games, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, against Marist and Sydenham respectively. Batting first against Marist we scored substantially, posting over 200 runs, with Tinus Huyser posting an explosive 50. Marist’s run chase was at times threatening, but the quality of our spin bowling attack meant they would always fall short. Unfortunately Sydenham defaulted the afternoon game. Following further games against Riccarton, St Albans, LPW and OBC we finished in first place and collected our second trophy for the season. With the tragic events of 22 February 2011, the remainder of the season was understandably cancelled, with the two-day competition incomplete. Had we had the opportunity to complete the full competition we would have been in a strong position to retain this trophy and achieve our goal of winning all three competitions.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 37 Throughout the season all of our players made significant contributions to the team’s dominant performances. Tinus Huyser and Josh Jones’ opening partnership was without peer in the grade. Both Tinus and Josh gained selection into the first grade team, where they both performed with consistency. In the coming seasons I am confident that Tinus, in first grade, will replicate his dominant form in second grade and will undoubtedly become a regular game winner for our first grade team. Similarly, Josh, when in full concentration, will also be a leading batsman in our first grade team. Tinus and Josh were joined in the top order by Scott Paulin and Steve McKean. Both Scott and Steve scored heavily for the team, with Steve also gaining selection into the first grade side, where he displayed a level of commitment and focus at the crease only matched by Tom Latham. Steve was deservedly named the first grade player of the season. He will now need to improve from these performances and develop into the backbone of the first grade top order. Adam Gillett, Ashley Taggart, Chris Anderson, Tom Bruce, Matt Latham, Carl Shaw and Rhys Barron all made valuable contributions with the bat. In particular Adam was invaluable in being able to comfortably and successfully float through- out the . Rhys gained selection into the team from third grade and looks capable of becoming a permanent player in the team. Equal to, or perhaps better than our batsman was our well-balanced bowling attack. The bowlers were led by opening bowlers Gareth Gibson and Alex Cotton. Gareth had his best season in second grade in two seasons and clearly has the ability to perform at this level for several more seasons. Alex carried a heavy workload and always created a number of wicket-taking opportunities for his bowling partners. Gareth and Alex shared the new ball with Brad Norris and Matt Latham. Brad was particularly impressive and shapes as a future first grade bowler. Matt was always effective with the ball, and bowled and competed at a level well above all opposition batsmen. I look forward to Matt taking a more prominent role in the first grade side this coming season. Our fast bowlers were well complemented by our medium pace bowlers, Mark Andrews and Jordie Merito. Mark finished the season as our highest wicket taker. Further cricket will only improve Mark’s performances. Jordie was always threatening and gained selection into the first grade side, where he enjoyed success. At times Jordie displayed leadership traits which I would encourage him to further develop at the club. Fellow medium pace bowlers Damien Corbett, Phil McCormack and Kevin Hurrell also all made valuable contributions with the ball. Adam Gillett led the team’s spinners, bowling his right-arm off-spinners. Adam’s accuracy and variations are without peer in second grade and well beyond the capabilities of most second grade batsman.

38 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club Whilst the team’s batsman and bowlers performed with constant success throughout the season, the strength in our team and the key to our extraordinary achievements lay in the hardened and intense mental attitude of all the players. Each team member played with an uncompromising desire to win, for their team mates, for the club and for their own personal satisfaction. This commitment and camaraderie was the heart of our success. As captain, I was fortunate to have such an exceptional group of committed young men around me. Ashley Taggart

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 39 The 2010/11 season was again a great one for THIRD GRADE the third grade team, securing the One-Day competition for the third year running and narrowly missing the Twenty20 title on the final day. Everyone contributed this season and it was an excellent team to be a part of. Special thanks to Mike Wheeler, Brett Thomson and Rhys Barron for helping steer the team, Andrew Dean for providing hours of entertainment both on and off the field (not to mention a lot of hard work with the junior teams) and Tom O’Flaherty for letting me run you out in hilarious circumstances in the One-Day semi-final.

40 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club WHANGAPAROA CANNONS PONY CLUB The standard of the Cannons season was set in round one, being the first of many nail-biting finishes. As the hot new team in the competition, coming together under a new banner, with new sponsors, and sharp new strip, this ‘New Kid in Town’ had much to prove out of the gates. Frankly, I could not have imagined a better opener to the season than the tooth-and-nail fought last ball victory over an honestly rubbish Hornby side. Whether it be the debutant, Cook, bringing up his maiden half at the top of the order, the ageing Hitchcock showing his wisdom with a well crafted knock through the tricky middle period, the ‘Main Event Moseley’, almost going toe-to-toe with a 200 kilo recycling truck driver, or the skipper, Peters, holding his nerve to steer it home with one wicket in hand, by the end this ragtag bunch had come together as one unit, and would go on to show they were a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, it became apparent over the course of the season that the Cannons were a bit of a ‘big game team’, only turning up to play when faced with the toughest of opponents, or for grudge matches where reputation outside of cricket was on the line. Finishing fourth equal on the table after an earthquake-shortened season, the Cannons had beaten every team sitting above them on the ladder, however had somehow managed to lose to absolute mud teams like Marist, Sydenham Goats and Allstars, ending their dream of lifting the coveted Fifth Grade Trophy. Standout performances were so common during the season that above average became the norm, however if I had to name a few memorable moments on and off the pitch … • The Snake Moseley taking a controversial 4-19 to decimate BWU Maroon’s middle order, securing the Cannons’ place as Burndale’s premier 5th grade side. • Dilla Smith, who finished the season with a of 10.39, with 5-11, 4-22 and 4-35 in consecutive games. • The Thorpedo, who attempted to carry his bat in three straight games, top scoring in the third with 60. • Big SawHorse Sawers, who never amounted to anything near what he should have, but is always there to lend a glass to teammate in trouble, or to his assailant. • Viking, for having the coolest nickname, punishing opening bowlers, and always being up for a late night trip to a Westport Hospital. • T Money Jorgenson, for having the second coolest nickname, and a game changing innings against Iconic – vintage T Money. 42 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 41 • Magnum Peters, 37* off about 15 balls against Sumner, and one of the ugliest five- wicket bags I’ve ever seen – what a burglar. • Dr Jellyman, spearheading the Cannons’ attack with 20 wickets at 15.5, he’s a second spell bowler you know. • BJ Patels, the token Indian, consistently setting the benchmark for New Zealand’s youth binge-drinking culture. • The Cookie Monster, pick of the batsman with 327, top score of 68, beard. • Ando Anderson, a great find, 13 wickets at 10.9. • Principal Sponsor Vedds, for trying to kill a smart-mouthed midget, and for what ACC describes as a ‘Dancefloor altercation’, always taking one for the team. • And finally the skipper, Peters, best of 4-4 off five overs, and his many captain’s knocks, including scoring the winning runs in four games. A shout out to all our ring-ins over the season, especially Steve ‘Senior’ Peters for turning out as 12th man week-in week-out, almost taking the glory against Sydenham Goats, only to get run out seven short of the target. Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 43 INDIAN ALL STARS 3C The Club was delighted to be approached by Prakash Barot and his merry men with a view to entering a “closed” team in one of the lower more social grades. We were assured that they would be low-maintenance, self-sufficient and that they would be externally sponsored by YOGIJI’S FOOD MART, MOBILEPHONE RESCUE and ACE VIDEO, all of which proved to be true. They even recruited and converted a couple of very able Kiwi lads, as well. They practised assiduously and often on Thursday nights on the “Astroturf” without demur. When it came to playing they were most excited as they were unbeaten in the whole of October and November and were during that period the only CCA team to have won all its games. After that a wheel or two fell off but not many more and they continued on their very successful way until a few freaks of nature curtailed their season peremptorily on 22 February, just when they had the winning of the grade in their grasp. In addition, a lad by the the name of Vishal Brahmbatt who bats like a certain Sachin, ran away with the much sought after Al. Brown trophy. The upshot was that five happy team mates accompanied Vishal to the end of season prize-giving and were singularly successful in their ability at the auctions.

A summary of each match appeared on the website during the season faithfully lodged weekly by the captain and chief organiser, Prakash Barot. The team placed 2nd in the competition which was the highest in the club if the 1 day and T20 matches of other teams are excluded. They will be looking to do even better this coming season.

44 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club FIFTH GRADE MAROONS I became the Fifth Grade Maroons captain one third of the way into the season due to the then captain, Andrew Dean, vacating the role. At that stage of the season the team were positioned towards the bottom of the competition and had performed below its potential, largely due to an inconsistent playing eleven. With more assistance from the cricket committee we were able to quickly improve our results. The team became centred around a core of players who were committed to playing week-in week-out cricket. These players included myself, Regan Wilson, Tony Edlin, James Castle, Ryan Gaut, Isaac Davis, Sreenivas Bethamsetty and Caleb Geddes. We were also fortunate to be able to call upon a number of other players from within the club to fill shortages in the team roster. In the middle to end of the season we were highly competitive, highlighted by victories against the majority of teams that finished the season ahead of us on the table. Much of our success was as a result of having a core group of committed players and from the camaraderie that this generated. We greatly appreciated the assistance of the cricket committee in locating players to fill our team for each week and benefited both in terms of enjoyment and results from playing with a full team. I have spoken to the majority of our players and am pleased to know that those players who remain in Christchurch are looking forward to the upcoming season, as am I. Lee James

46 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club The Presidents side had another THE PRESIDENT’S MEN successful season, being able to field a side every week of the competition. We had a core of regular players and a large number of part-timers who made up the numbers. The captaincy was shared amongst Dave Robertson, Hamish Kember and myself. Dave Robertson and Graeme Turner were the leading run-scorers, and always had high strike rates. Jared Croft had the highest individual score with an impressive 144. Chris Kennedy had a top score of 88, and Denis Pyatt had a good season with a top score of 50. Shane Young finished the season well with a couple of rapid-fire scores in the mid 40s, opening the innings. We had a number of new recruits from the police in our side, with Chris Jones and Mike Kneebone, who also batted well. Hamish Kember was our leading wicket-taker and has evolved into an excellent medium-pacer with a great turning slower ball. Greg Houghton from Aussie was a great allrounder and team man, who starred in our final game with a match-winning 6 for 13, including a hat-trick. He also batted well and had a top score of 64. Jeff Roy was another new recruit who performed well. He brought a number of good men from the army, who were great team players. Grant Dickson, Andrew Tranter and Eric White all performed well, as did Peter Hewson, Rob Noster, Rooney, Aditya, and a squad including dozens more. We beat a number of the top sides in the grade and finished near the middle of the points table. An enjoyable season finished with a good turnout at the end of season prizegiving. We need a few more regulars for next season, so if you know of any starters, please let me know at your earliest convenience. Chris Kennedy

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 47 The 2010-11 season was a very exciting one. This WOMEN’S CRICKET was the first time for many year that BWUCC has had a women’s cricket team. I think this is a very positive thing and a great start in something for the future. The club has been very supportive towards our women and made us feel very welcome. We would like to give a huge thanks to Rob Noster who came most Thursdays to coach us and was there on Saturdays when he could be – so thank you very much Rob, your time and effort were much appreciated. With a four-team competition and the season being cut short we ended up finishing second, which for the first time as a unit is a great achievement and we can only go forward from here. We had a few individual performances that stood out: • Sarah Smith and Angela Dennett had a 100-run partnership with both getting their highest scores Angela 51* and Sarah Smith 27*. In a Twenty20 game that’s a great performance. That was the game against Marist-Harewood; we batted first, scored 124 and rolled them for 37. • Sarah Glover achieved her best bowling performance 5–12 off 5 overs and we ended up rolling Marist-Harewood for 33 that game. Angela Dennett scored 31* and Amanda Wilson played a very good supporting role for her 2*. We ended up getting the runs within three overs. • Tracey Wilson achieved her highest score of 47* . A special thanks must go to Katrina Wenborn for wicket-keeping so well for the whole season, surely a thankless task, but greatly appreciated by all. Our ground fielding was quite tidy as was our catching. I will remember Christine Wilson’s excellent outfield catch for quite some time. Maybe a bit more effort at Thursday nights’ practices will help us even more. We always had a few spectators in the hot and the cold of a Christchurch summer and I wish to acknowledge the moral support of Dayle and Christine’s husband, on the boundary edge, through thick and thin. A huge thank you to everyone who filled in for us – it’s always a hard task doing so and we appreciate it so much.

48 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club The 2011–2012 season is looking very positive for our women’s team: we gained a few players this season and having the majority of our team back is great. Securing ourselves a full-time coach is also a positive. On the sad side of things we have lost a few players due to circumstances over the last 12 months. It has been very tough for everyone so I wish those people good luck and hope it goes well for them and their families with their new start to life. I will be in touch with everyone soon re pre-season training. Angela Dennett (captain)

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 49 JUNIOR CRICKET The junior section of the club has certainly gone through some trying times during the season. I would like to thank all parents, players, coaches and volunteers for their help and dedication. Have a Go cricket was lucky to have the services of senior player coach Sam Noster who organised the players every Friday, ensuring that they all fully participated in various skill sessions. Special thanks to all those parents who helped out every week. Roger White organised Kiwi cricket and had all the players participating in games, drills and skills. Our Kiwi cricketers were invited to watch and play cricket during the break at the , New Zealand v Pakistan. A great day was enjoyed by all. Junior Twenty20 cricket was organised by Richard Hartshorn and Angus McIntosh. The skill they brought to the Twenty20 players have certainly rubbed off and has prepared them for the hard ball in Saturday morning cricket. On Saturday mornings we fielded a Senior Premier team, three Senior One-Day, three Junior One-Day and one Junior Super Eight teams. All teams performed with merit and good sportsmanship. The future of the club is looking good with some fine young cricketers coming through the ranks. Thank you to the following coaches for their committment during the season: Peter Hay, John Carter, Phil Welsh, Richard Hartshorn, Phil Gunby, Warwick Holmes, Amanda and Grant Simmons, Bruce Kennedy and Andrew Deans. This season we introduced our new playing tops and caps, lifting the profile of the club. All Saturday morning teams this season received professional coaching from Sam Noster and Carl Huyser. The club is very grateful for the dedication shown by Sam and Carl. Every Saturday Junior cricket nights were successfully held, where Junior teams were presented with their player of the day certificates, met Senior club members and made new friends. We will be continuing to hold and improve club nights during the coming season. Although the season seemed to have finished abruptly in February, we were able to allow Youth and Junior teams to play cricket until the end of the season. This was due to the efforts of John Thompson. Thank you to John Thompson and Nook Ebert for preparing first class wickets throughout the season.

50 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club Junior Team Reports Team 1 Premiers The pre-Christmas Premiers promised much with the core of the 2009 post Christmas team returning, joined by three of the club’s better performing Year 7s. The Premier grade was considered very strong with Sydenham, East Shirley and Medbury, major threats to Burnside’s aspirations of winning their first Premier title for some years. Burnside however, led by the talented Mathew Hay, won all nine games played prior to Christmas, including twice beating the very strong Sydenham team – which boasted seven representative players – on its way to winning not only the Premier title, but also the Derek Coburn Challenge Shield and the Bill Duncan Challenge Shield. While there was no doubt that the team’s best batter was Matt Hay, who finished as top run scorer with an average of over 370 (highest score of 92* against Sydenham), he was extremely well supported by the rest of the team with both bat and ball, with the very strong team spirit seeing the team win several very close games, and being well represented in both the Year 8 and Year 7 representative teams. Post-Christmas, with eight of the pre-Christmas team having left for High School, the three remaining players were joined by a number of other talented players from both within and outside the Burnside club, again looking to continue the excellent pre-Christmas results. A first-up loss to OBC, followed by wins over East Shirley and Sydenham saw the season come to an abrupt halt following the February Earthquake. Three more ‘social’ games were arranged subsequent to this with a win against Merivale Papanui, and a win and a loss against Halswell, setting the team up well for the start of the 2011–12 season. Bruce Kennedy Team 5 Junior One-Day Christmas brought a few changes to the team with a couple of boys moving up to the Premier side and a change to the coach. However this group of boys continued to perform well winning most of their games but more importantly improving their individual skills and teamwork. Three players topped 200 runs post-Christmas these being Mitchell Hay (average 135), Tom Dunlop (average 39) and James Glynn (average 40). Bowling was a strength of the team with three players getting over 10 wickets, Mitchell (14), Nathan Louis (10) & Argan Srivastava (10) with Ankur Patel bowling extremely well without a lot of luck.

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 51 Most of the boys were involved with the Year 6 or 7 regional tournament, being selected for either development or emerging sides, with Mitchell Hay, Tom Dunlop, Ankur Patel & Rishav Dhakal going on to represent the CJCA in invitation sides. Peter Hay Team 6 Junior One-Day This year we had a group of really enthusiastic boys. All of them developed a great deal through the season, particularly in relation to the teamwork aspects. We really worked on the idea that everyone has something to do every ball when in the field. Overall, we won most games, some of them by close margins, and generally had a great deal of fun. Each week we tried to set goals for players – simple things that were tailored to each person. I had much pleasure in giving out little rewards to players who, for example, called really well when running between the wickets, backed-up the wicketkeeper’s or bowler’s wickets when fielding, or maybe kept a front shoulder up when bowling. The following awards were made: Best batsman: Jaden Manawatu; Best bowler: Ethan Ng; Most improved: Ben Hartshorn. This year, as part of the emphasis on team aspects, I introduced a special award: Coach’s prize for the best team player: Theo McIntosh. I also want to particularly thank Rebecca Manawatu, who became a de facto Assistant Coach, and all those who helped out with the scoring when needed. Richard Hartshorn Team 7 Junior One-Day The season started chaotically as I found myself fulfilling the coach, manager, umpire and scorer positions for the first game. Fortunately, after a couple of weeks, with the help of Jonathon King (umpire) and Rochelle Paul (scorer) we had a great team in place. We enjoyed a successful season with great team spirit amongst the boys. I didn’t compile statistics as there was no pecking order and we rotated the batting, bowling and wicket keeping so that every player had opportunities. Everyone in the team won Player of the Day, rewarding their participation during the season. Several of our players made Emerging and Development Teams but the Earthquake put paid to any future rewards for their efforts. I would like to thank Peter Burke for his help and support to our team and for arranging additional coaching for the boys. Chas Cruse

52 Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club Team 8 Junior Super 8s Our team was made up of Ryan Sheehan, Akshat Goyal, Riley Goad, Jamie Simmons, Tyler Jones, Jacob Woods, Elliot Lambert, Callum Jarvis and Cameron Giddens. Most of our players were all new to competitive cricket and I think we did fairly well considering some of the teams we played against had been playing together for 2-3 years. It was a learning curve for all of us including me as scorer/manager, and Grant and Kelvin who stepped in as umpires. We only managed to win one game but from where we started at the beginning of the season we improved immensely with the help of coaching from Andrew and Carl who were provided by the club as we didn’t have a parent who was available for coaching. The boys all enjoyed the season and Cameron had a great game where he managed a hat-trick, which was outstanding. I hope the boys will continue on next season and hopefully can play together again and build as a team. Amanda Simmons

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club 53 YOUTH CRICKET North West Youth Cricket (NWYC), continues to administer Youth Cricket for the four entities of BWCUCC, MPCC, Burnside High School and Papanui High School. Ten teams were entered into the CCA competitions for the 2011 season. Although there was an increase in the number of teams entered, it was noted that with the Youth Season runnning from January to December there were some problems with players committing to the full season and opting not to continue playing cricket after the winter break. With this in mind more teams were entered in the T20 competitions, which require fewer players and larger squads were used rather than trying to find players for teams that only had 11 to start with. The Year 9 and 10 group numbers remain strong although there is concern over numbers lessening from Year 11 to year 13 and retention of players should be a future priority. 1st XI The 1st XI was elevated into the Canterbury Schools 1st XI Grade for the one-day games to be played in the first half of the 2011 Season. If they were successful in this format they would be included in the two-day competition. At the time of the earthquake the team had obtained wins over CBHS 2nd XI, Timaru Boys High School and two losses, to StAC and Ashburton. We await the CCA decision on the format for the remainder of the season. CCA Year 9 & 10 Trials We had many players make the trial teams for both year groups. This is an area that we encourage all our players to trial for and the numbers that we have had successful is a testament to the quality coaching that our players are receiving. Representative honors were achieved by: Nathan Shaw, Canterbury Secondary School Team and CCA Junior Academy; Chris Warner, Canterbury U16A Team and CCA Junior Academy; and Sam Lawson, Canterbury U15A Team. Winter training Squads Many of our players have attended these trainings at the new CCA Hornby facility, with some of our elite players training at Lincoln. Century Maker – Johnny Milnes-Win (125) Many thanks to the BWCUCC for their on-going support. Lee McKenzie

In the Petersen Shield which was awarded for cricket-playing superiority, we were only 1.76 points behind the winner, some would consider we were unfairly penalised by the entry but withdrawal of the Casino Team and the early withdrawal of Sesame Streetz. In the Hadlee Trophy we were a mere 16 points behind the winner.
