Helen’s Tower, here I stand, Dominant over sea and land, Son’s love built me and I hold, Mother’s love in letter’d gold.

These lines written by Alfred Lord Tennyson are engraved on the walls of the poetry room. Helen’s Tower is not unique, seventy years later a replica Helen’s Tower was built, dedicated on 19 November 1921 at Thiepval near Albert. The , as it was named, commemorates the appalling losses sustained in the Great War. The lines from Tennyson have been slightly altered;

Helen’s Tower, here I stand, Dominant over sea and land, Son’s love built me and I hold, Ulster’s love in letter’d gold.
