I am therefore delighted to have the key to our experience and identity, and key opportunity to introduce this year’s European to sharing our unique way of life. The theme Heritage Open Days. Visitors to EHOD will be given access to some of the most remarkable and iconic places that have shaped arts and entertainment in Northern Ireland. There is a great variety of buildings and events organised for enjoyment, exploration and inspiration to all generations of heritage enthusiasts. Browse through the Brochure for the arts and entertainment icon or check out the highlights on the Web App. Here are just some of the themed events on offer this year: The Braid Ballymena Town Hall, Museum and Arts Centre: The Fiddle and the Fife (See page 33) Saturday 14 September 14.00 - 15.30 There will be a new, temporary exhibition: ‘The Fiddle and the Fife’ which explores musical and cultural heritage locally, including music performed on stage and music played to accompany traditional dance. Enjoy a performance from local traditional musicians who have been involved with the project and a chance to view the exhibition in the museum gallery. 05 Arts & Entertainment Milford House - ART HIGHLIGHT TOUR and Bunty Turner Exhibition (see page 47) Saturday 14 September 10.00 - 18.00 and Sunday 15 September 11.00 - 18.00. To celebrate the Arts & Entertainment theme Milford House has special tours exploring their Art Collection on Saturday at 15.00 and on Sunday at 11.30 and 15.00. They also have a special exhibition where you can discover the career of the famous actress Bunty Turner. Carnegie Oldpark (see page 71) Saturday 14 September and Sunday 15 September 11.00 - 15.00 To complement this year’s theme, local groups will exhibit and sell arts and crafts and local musicians will be performing over the weekend. NI Screen and the Digital Film Archive will show short films from the old Belfast. For our little friends there will be storytelling sessions and a drawing corner, where they can draw how they imagine the building after it has been restored. Strand Arts Centre (see page 62) Saturday 14 September 12.30 - 19.30 and Sunday 15 September 14.30 - 19.30 You can enjoy a behind the scenes tour of Northern Ireland’s oldest cinema and hear all about a planned restoration. There will be creative activity to allow you to say what you would want to see in the new venue! Portaferry Visitor Information Centre (see page 77) Saturday 14 September 10.00 -17.00 and Sunday 15 September 13.00 – 17.00. Situated beside Portaferry Castle, overlooking scenic Strangford Lough it is a short walk from the village centre. On Saturday from 14.00 - 16.00 there will be traditional skills demonstrations and a circus skills workshop. 06 Newry and Mourne Museum (see page 88) Saturday 14 September 10.00 -16.30 and Sunday 15 September 13.30 – 17.00. On Saturday 14, 11.30 and 14.30, there will be a bread making demonstration, with sampling of course. On Sunday 15, 14.00 and 15.00 there will be tours of the Museum. You will be guided through the galleries including a temporary exhibition “War Declared: the local impact of World War II” and displays that highlight the history of this unique region. Pre-Booking is Essential. Film Night at Enniskillen Castle - Irish Language Short Films (see page 94) Friday 13 September 19.00 – 21.00 Enjoy an evening where you can try out your cúpla focal with three short Irish language films - ‘Lipservice’, ‘Yu Ming is ainm dom’ and ‘Aqua’. Red Sails Memory Share, Portstewart Town Hall (see page 110) Saturday 14 September 14.00 -17.00 The picturesque seaside town of Portstewart celebrated the 50th anniversary in 2018 of its annual July Community Arts Festival - Red Sails where many happy family memories have been created. To celebrate this priceless piece of Portstewart’s heritage, Portstewart Community Association are hosting a Memory Sharing day. There will be a display of old memorabilia dating back to 1968 and you’re invited to come along and share photographs, videos and memories of the festival. Refreshments will be provided. Public Art Walking Tour in Omagh (see page 116) Saturday 14 September 11.00 -12.30 Enjoy a free Public Walking Tour and learn more about the public art on display
