The forest type was divided into homogenous vegetation strata (HVS) based on the altitude, temperature, precipitation and forest types. A total of 8 ha area was sampled using 0.1 ha (20m 50m) plot and all tree species ≥ 1cm girth at breast height (gbh) within the plot were enumerated. In all, 4614 individuals were recorded that belonged to 122 species representing 90 genera and 39 families. Fabaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Rubiaceae, and Combretaceae were the species-rich families. The mean stand density of STR was 577 ha-1, but it varied from 180 ha-1 to 779 ha-1. Similarly, the mean basal area of the STR was 14.51 m2ha-1 which ranged between 8.41 m2 ha-1 and 26.96 m2 ha-1. The stem count was low at the lowest girth class (1-10 cm gbh) and high at 20-30 cm gbh in all the forest types. Anogeissus latifolia was the dominant species in the semi- evergreen and deciduous forest types while Chloroxylon swietenia was dominant in the thorn forest. -
Cordia Dodecandra and Cordia Sebestena (Boraginaceae) from the Yucatan Peninsula
Botanical Sciences 92 (2): 289-297, 2014 ECOLOGY DISTYLOUS TRAITS IN CORDIA DODECANDRA AND CORDIA SEBESTENA (BORAGINACEAE) FROM THE YUCATAN PENINSULA CÉSAR CANCHÉ-COLLÍ AND AZUCENA CANTO1 Centro de Investigación Científi ca de Yucatán (CICY) Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico 1corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: Distyly is a genetically-controlled polymorphism with two fl oral morphs exhibiting spatial, reciprocal separation bet- ween stigmas and anthers; one morph presents styles above anthers, and the other styles below anthers. Distyly is usually linked to a self-incompatibility system that prevents self-pollination and crosses between plants of the same morph, thereby ensuring sym- metrical mating and equal morph ratios within populations. This study is the fi rst description of distylous traits in the tropical tree species Cordia dodecandra and C. sebestena from the Yucatan Peninsula. Principal components analysis of fl ower morphological traits identifi ed segregation into two groups with characteristically distylous morphology. Estimation of reciprocal herkogamy using indices showed almost perfect reciprocity in the distance between long and short sexual organs in the two fl ower morphs of both species. Reciprocity between organs was lower in C. dodecandra, suggesting less accuracy in pollen transference between morphs. Self-incompatibility was observed for C. dodecandra, but could not be confi rmed for C. sebestena. However, a 1:1 fl oral morph ratio within the sampled C. sebestena populations suggests the existence of a distylous, self-incompatibility system in this species. Morph distribution in C. dodecandra did not follow a typically distylous distribution, suggesting a disruption in popula- tion processes such as seed dispersion and seedling establishment in this species. -

The floristic composition and diversity of tropical dry deciduous and gallery forests were studied in Chacocente Wildlife Refuge, located on the Pacific coast in Nicaragua during 1994 and 2000. Density, dominance and frequency as well as species and family important values were computed to characterize the floristic composition. A variety of diversity measures were also calculated to examine heterogeneity in each forest community. A total of 29 families, 49 genera and 59 species were represented in 2 ha dry deciduous forest. In the gallery forest, the number of families, genera and species recorded in 2000 inventory was 33, 48 and 58, respectively and slightly higher than the 1994 inventory. -

It is a medium-sized deciduous tree and very vigorous in growth. According to traditional system, it possesses anthelmintic, purgative, diuretic, expectorant, antipyretic, hepatoprotective and analgesic action. The fruits are edible and used as pickle. The gum obtained from mucilage is used for pasting sheets of paper and as matrix forming material in tablet formulations. Phytochemical investigations show the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, tannins and reducing sugar. Evaluation of pharmacological activities confirmedC. obliqua plant as antimicrobial, hypotensive, respiratory stimulant, diuretic and anti‑inflammatory drug. A number of traditional activities of this plant still need scientific approval which will increase its medicinal potential. This review presents the Pharmacognostic properties, phytochemical constituents, traditional uses and biological activities reported for the plant and it will be helpful to explore the knowledge about Cordia obliqua Willd. for the researchers. About 74 plant species including 25 leafy vegetables, 4 fruit yielding and 45 fruit / seed yielding varieties have been identified. The local tribal communities for their dietary requirements since a long time have utilized these forest produce. Many of these less familiar edible plants can be subjected to further investigation to meet the food and nutrition security of the nation.
