ST. BASIL THE GREAT 3 FALL 2018 Honduras Mission Update By Fr. Walt

There were two mission trips in late July and August. The first trip was a work trip where the team worked on water purification systems and at the nursing home and orphanage. The nursing home involved painting long corridors and rooms. The previous paint was an institutional green. The new beige brightened up the corridors and rooms and brightened the spirits of the residents. The team also painted water houses and one of the outside walls of the building where the team resides on the mission trip.

We also played with the children in the orphanage and did repairs to the facility. One of the team members brought childrens’ games, coloring books, nail polish, and other activities. The children loved the team members and the members loved being with the children.

We celebrated Mass in a village with Bishop Bonello and enjoyed a wonderful luncheon with him. He provided a historic overview of the villages, back to the arrival of the Spaniard missionaries. It was just a super day.

We also met with the Olancho Aid Foundation that has taken over the operation and maintenance of the water purification systems now in 45 villages. We continue to collaborate with Olancho Aid and it is a very good working relationship that will ensure the sustainability of the water systems in the future. We are blessed to have found a partner in Honduras which shares our concern about the sustainability of these water systems and providing safe drinking water.

It was very much a blessing to see the older adults in the nursing home and spend time with them. The children are just wonderful and an inspiration in sharing their toys and games, with the older children helping the younger. Just an amazing experience of selflessness!

We will have a Honduras Information Night on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:00 pm in the Rectory. Please join us if you can. Future trips are in January and next summer. It is an experience you will not forget.

ST. BASIL THE GREAT 4 FALL 2018 Honduras Medical Trip

In early August, 2018 a team of 13 St. Basil missionaries and 6 Hondurans joined to form a medical and dental brigade to serve over 600 people in Honduras. Clinic sites included San Francisco de la Pas, Juticalpa, and Manto as well as the orphanage and nursing home cared for by our parish. The need was evident as long lines formed early for medical and dental services. The dental team also provided services for the families of our Honduran helpers, as well as for the nuns and staff of the nursing home. While on site in San Francisco de la Paz, TV stations interviewed some of the team members. The reporters showed their appreciation for our help while emphasizing the many needs of the Honduran people. Members of our team also reflected on their encounters. Following Christ’s example, it was the teams’ personal touch and willingness to simply listen to the concerns of the patients that was so appreciated by the people who came to the clinics.

While a small group went on the trip, many within the parish were instrumental in the success of mission team efforts. A sample of donations included over 50,000 pills for pain, 9,000 vitamins, 4,400 pills for allergies, 500 tooth brushes, 150 pairs of reading glasses and 25 canes. All unused medicine was donated to the nursing home, orphanage, and under-served clinics near San Francisco de la Paz.

The compassion and humanitarian nature of our parish resulted in many receiving needed care. Thank you for your continued generous support of the Honduran mission.

We have twelve Fair Trade vendors who have established a trading partnership with farmers and artisans that is based on trust and respect. They try to ensure that those providing these wonderful products are given fair value for their work and products. When you shop Fair Trade, you are helping to ensure fair wages and human dignity for producers while contributing to community investment and environmental sustainability in both developing countries and in the United States. In addition, each year at our event we sell raffle tickets for a chance to win either a beautiful basket filled with fair trade items that represent our vendors, or a handmade quilt from a St. Matthias parishioner. In 2017, you very generously donated $1,140 that we were able to send to Caritas Jerusalem, who made sure the funds were used to help the children of Gaza. Our Journey Our Adult Faith

“IT IS TIME FOR ME TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CATHOLIC FAITH!”

Our RCIA Program

The fact you are reading this article may be evidence that you have noticed this turn from it being the question, “IS IT TIME FOR ME TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CATHOLIC FAITH?” to “IT IS TIME FOR ME TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CATHOLIC FAITH!”

We hope St. Basil The Great has created a welcoming, supportive place for you to find spiritual and personal growth.

There is much more to learn, so on your faith journey asking questions is the best way to truly discover what God may be calling you to at this time in your life.

The RCIA program, Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (which includes children age seven and older), is held Sunday mornings and is the place to start your journey.

Perhaps one of these situations fits closely to your own story…

“I have been attending Sunday Mass and want to learn more about becoming Catholic.” (Maybe you were never baptized or you were baptized in another Christian Church.)

“I have children in the PSR program or attending St. Michael’s and want to join them in receiving the sacraments.” (Maybe you or one of your children were baptized in the , but missed making First Communion or Confirmation.)

THE ROOTS OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING Catholic Social Teaching is like an ancient oak tree, whose roots are in the Scriptures. Its trunk has grown throughout the centuries, as it responds to soil and climate conditions. Catholic Social Teaching responds to cultural and societal conditions and draws nutrients from the Word of God. Catholic Social Teaching is a central and essential element of our faith. Its roots are in the Hebrew prophets who spoke of God’s special love for the poor and called God’s people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Christ, who came “to bring glad tidings to the poor . . . liberty to captives . . . recovery of sight to the blind” (Luke 4:18-19), and who identified himself with “the least of these,” the hungry and the stranger (Matthew 25:45). United States Conference of Catholic Bishops These Teachings, based on Scripture, have been developed from various papal encyclicals starting in the late 1800’s and focus on how Catholics are to interact and relate to the modern world in which we live. It recognizes that we are all children of God who are connected as sisters and brothers.

Jesus came to live among us so that by His words and actions we are shown how to live and to love our fellow human beings. By following the Way of Christ, we become the vehicle for God to work in each of us to help bring about the Kingdom of God. Living out Jesus’ commandment to love one another in the context of society is what Catholic Social Teaching is all about as we work to create a more just and peaceful world.

Join us during this year to more fully understand how to Live the Gospel embracing the Way of Jesus.

ST. BASIL THE GREAT 14 FALL 2018 September 2018

Dear Parish Family,

I believe we are all aware of the recent news reports detailing the outcome of the Grand Jury investigation in Pennsylvania.

The report of child abuse and coverup by clergy leaves us all deeply saddened, disheartened and angered. These incidents of abuse have done tremendous damage to the lives of so many children and families.

There is no excuse for what has happened or for covering it up. I believe the leadership of the Church must be transparent in every way possible in responding to this very tragic situation.

I know this can shake your faith in the Church. This is not about the Church of Jesus Christ, but about individuals who are supposed to serve the Church and who have completely failed in their calling.

I do believe that the Holy Spirit is with us and among us as the Church. We must look to the inspiration, wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit at this very challenging time and address this issue directly and transparently.

Throughout the Diocese of Cleveland and at St. Basil we follow the policy on the safety and protection of children. We do background checks and Virtus training on all staff members and volunteers. This practice has been in place since early 2005.

I ask you to join me in praying for all the victims of clergy sexual abuse and their loved ones. Pray for healing, hope and peace for all whose lives have been touched and damaged by this abuse.

In His Love,

ST. BASIL THE GREAT 15 FALL 2018 St. Basil
