Introduction

Dear Player

Welcome to the 2016/17 cricket season with the Perth Cricket Club . The Perth Cricket Club is one of the oldest cricket clubs in having originally formed in May 1862. We have a long and proud history and have had many stars represent us over the years including Test representatives Dennis Lillee, , and NZ’s Luke Ronchi. It is a privilege to follow these, and many other past players, in representing Perth CC.

As our emblem suggests we continue to strive for excellence both on and off the field and we are glad to have you on board for the upcoming season. With an enthusiastic coaching group and supportive administration we are all hopeful of an outstanding year. Behind the scenes your committee continues to work very hard to create an environment for you to achieve your best on the field. This handbook provides the information you need to know about the club, both on and off the field. Detailing all aspects about being part of the club including: training requirements, captains, coaches and committee members contact details, social policy, listing of sponsors and other information required to provide for a strong club. Your involvement will give you great satisfaction and help the club grow and become stronger. By using this handbook and communicating with all at the club, yours and the clubs success can be achieved. Last season showed again how strong Perth is in the WACA competition, for the second consecutive year coming within a whisker of taking out the Club Championship and several teams participating in finals. We must go one step better this year. So challenge yourself and enjoy the season.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do .” Adam Gilchrist

Trademark, Objectives and Values From Head Coach, Jason Thompson

Our Trademark drives our objectives and values;

OBJECTIVES – My primary objective is to “Be The Best We Can Be ”. This is to be achieved by • Providing a professional, comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere around the club on and off the field. I want it to be a good positive place to be. • Encourage an environment that allows players to improve, develop and reach their individual potential which will ultimately benefits teams and will go a long way to helping us “Be The Best We Can Be” • Continually challenge the group to improve mentally and physically as players and individuals • Build a reputation for the club based around hard work, mental toughness, passion and commitment Perth Cricket Club Handbook Page 8

VALUES – All players that represent PCC this year will be expected to adhere to the following values as this will play a major part in achieving club, team and individual objectives • TEAM FIRST – at all times, all actions in playing, training and preparation must have a team first mentality. If your action is not in the best interest of the team or club it’s simple, don’t do it. This is non-negotiable. • HONESTY – In all facets, playing, training, preparation and evaluation of self and team. • RESPECT – For the club, team mates, coaches, opposition and officials • RELENTLESNESS - in our pursuit of being the best we can be, nothing sways us from this objective.

These values are basic but important to embrace as we enter the season. History shows that successful clubs in sport focus on and embrace similar type values.

Perth Cricket Club Handbook Page 14

Junior Boys Playing Policy

Perth Cricket Club aims to field junior teams of appropriate numbers, capped between 15 and 18 players per squad. Each of the four junior boys coaches of the four age groups are selected by the Perth Cricket Club to coach the age groups of– U13s, U14s, U15s and U17s. The club aims to progress juniors through each age level and support the players and coaches. Each year the club gives the opportunity to new community cricketers to take part in a trial process and possible selection. Placing players into teams in junior sport is always a complicated process and never an exact science. It cannot be completely planned ahead as numbers are not known until trials open and the process has started. While the club aims to meet players’ and parents’ requests, it is not always possible to do so and we urge people to remember that players who trial for the Perth Cricket Club and are successful are the best young cricketers in the region. This is important to know as we all believe we should be giving everyone a fair go. We also need to remember that district cricket is the breeding ground for test cricketers in Australia so the best young players will be provided every opportunity to excel. A player must not play in a Junior Competition cricket match unless they meet the following age-based criteria for the applicable Junior Competition on 31 August immediately preceding the Season: (a) Under 17 (WADCC Shield) – less than 17 years; (b) Under 15 (Watkins Shield) – less than 15 years; (c) Under 14 (McKenzie Shield) – less than 14 years; and (d) Under 13 (Inverarity Shield) – less than 13 years. • Players can be recommended to the Junior Cricket coordinator by junior coaches to play up a higher level. They will be looked at individually and performances and squad sizes will be taken into consideration. Once agreed the Junior Cricket coordinator will advise the Perth Cricket Club committee and coaches.

Perth Cricket Club Handbook Page 15

Junior Team Selections – Match Days

• Once the coaches have finished their selection process a final squad will be announced and names provided to the Perth Cricket Club committee via the junior cricket coordinator. • Team selections will be made on the Thursday prior to the weekend fixture. Coaches are encouraged to provide feedback to players during the training session who are unsuccessful in making the final team for the weekends match. The club will not enforce a rotation policy for players. Players are selected on performances, team structures and behaviours that are set by the coach. • Captains and Vice Captains are to be announced prior to the first match. Captains and Vice captains are not to be rotated over the course of the cricket season. Coaches are encouraged to select a leadership group for the season. • If the squad has players who have been invited to take part from the country, allowances will be taken into consideration. The Perth Cricket Club recognises the importance of creating strong relationships with Regional cricket associations and with that comes flexibility when allowing players to attend training sessions and selection in matches. • Player behaviour at training and on match days will come into consideration. The Perth Cricket Club upholds very high standards and values and all players must adhere to these when representing the club. Players will respect each other, opposition and officials at all times. • Players selected in Western Australian Cricket Association Rep cricket teams and squads will be given every opportunity to perform. Players who qualify to play in a lower aged team when required will have the ability to play in both junior teams. Example – An underage player playing in U15’s (boy aged 13 turning 14 after September 1 st ) will have the opportunity to play 14’s as well as 15’s. This decision will be made by the junior coaches of the two teams in question and in conjunction with the Junior Cricket Coordinator. • All players in junior squads, while it is not compulsory, are strongly encouraged to align themselves with a junior community cricket club to maximise the opportunity to play cricket.

Perth Cricket Club Handbook Page 16

KidSport KidSport enables eligible Western Australian children aged 5-18 years to participate in community sport and recreation by offering them financial assistance towards club fees. The fees go directly from the local government to the registered KidSport clubs participating in the project.

The state government initiative allows families with a Health Care Card or Pension Concession Card up to $200 to use for each child. The money can be used for fees and equipment. Applicants primary place of residence must be in the local government area they are applying to.

If you are eligible, complete the voucher and send to the Local Government for processing. They will then send back to the PCC to invoice the Local Govt.

Ladies

To further expand female involvement in cricket, Perth CC plan to again support a social ladies competition over six consecutive Friday nights in late January/February. The ‘Sunset Scorchers’ is a social competition and it is aimed at providing interested ladies the opportunity to join in some fun competitive sport. It is hoped wives, girlfriends and mums will all give it a go. The club will be open so partners, friends and children can come down and enjoy the evening as well. For further information please contact the Female Cricket Coordinator.

Keep an eye on social media for details or contact the club.

Masters The Perth Cricket Club fields a side in the WACA Masters competition. This competition is available to those over 35 years of age. This is not restricted to past PCC players but they are encouraged and it is a great way to keep in touch. For further information, contact Stuart Thomson. First match is Sunday 30 th October.

Code of Behaviour • Operate within the rules and spirit of the game promoting fair play over winning at any cost. • Respect the decision of officials, coaches and administrators • Never argue with an official, if you disagree with a decision have your captain approach the official during a break to seek an explanation. • Control your temper. Verbal of officials and sledging other players are not acceptable acts, remember that missing matches from suspension lets the rest of your team mates down as well as yourself. • Work equally hard for yourself and your team, your teams performance will benefit and so will you. • Be a good sport, applaud all good performances whether they are made by your team or not. • Treat all participants in your sport as you like to be treated. Do not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor. • Cooperate with your coach, team mates, umpires and opponents, without them there would be no competition. • Respect the rights and worth of every person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion. • Attend and participate in Club training enthusiastically and cooperatively to ensure maximum enjoyment and benefit. • Adopt responsible behaviour in relation to alcohol and other drugs. • Act with integrity and objectivity, and accept responsibility for your decisions and actions. • Ensure your decisions and actions contribute to a safe & harassment-free environment. • Do not tolerate harmful or abusive behaviours. The WADCCI rules have penalties for infringements and poor behaviour. Please note you will be asked to personally settle any fine that you incur for the club.

WADCCI Anti-bullying Policy

The Western Australian District Cricket Council (Inc.) has produced an anti-bullying policy. This policy applies to all members, committee, coaches, players, visitors and volunteers of the WADCCI League. Statement of Intent The WADCCI is committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our members so they can train and play in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our club. If bullying does occur, it will be dealt with directly by the club promptly and effectively. What is Bullying? Bullying is the use of aggression with the intention of hurting another person. Bullying can be: • Emotional : being unfriendly, excluding, tormenting (eg hiding kit, threatening gestures) • Physical : pushing, kicking, hitting, punching or any use of violence • Racist : racial taunts, graffiti, gestures • Sexual : unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments. • Homophobic : because of, or focusing on the issue of sexuality • Verbal : name-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing • Social/Cyber : All areas of internet, such as e-mail, Twitter & Facebook. Mobile threats by text messaging and calls.

Everybody has the right to be treated with respect. Members who are bullying need to learn different ways of behaving. All Cricket Clubs have a responsibility to respond promptly and effectively to issues of bullying. Policy Objectives • All club and association administrators, coaching staff, children and parents should have an understanding of what bullying is. • All members should know what the club policy is on bullying, what they should do if bullying arises and follow the policy when bullying is reported.

Perth Cricket Club Handbook Page 43

• As a club we take bullying seriously. Members should be assured that they will be supported when bullying is reported. Bullying will not be tolerated.

Signs & Symptoms A child may indicate by signs or behaviour that he or she is being bullied. Adults should be aware of these possible signs and that they should investigate if a child: • Says they are being bullied • Changes their usual routine • Is unwilling to go to the club • Becomes withdrawn, anxious, or lacking in confidence • Comes home with clothes torn or belongings damaged • Has possessions which are damaged • Asks for money or starts stealing money (to pay bully) • Has unexplained cuts or bruises • Is frightened to say what is wrong • Gives improbable excuses for any of the above.

These signs and behaviours may indicate other problems, but bullying should be considered a possibility and should be investigated. Procedures 1. Report bullying incidents to the Club Welfare Officer (or Club Committee Member) 2. In cases of serious bullying, the incidents will be reported to the State or Territory Cricket Association for advice. 3. Parents should be informed and will be asked to come in to a meeting to discuss the problem. 4. If necessary and appropriate, police will be consulted. 5. The bullying behaviour or threats of bullying must be investigated and the bullying stopped quickly. 6. An attempt will be made to help the bully (or bullies) change their behaviour.

Perth Cricket Club Handbook Page 44

Prevention The following four step non-compliance strategy will be followed if anyone breaches The WADCCI Anti-bullying Policy. 1. Assume the person is unaware of the policy. 2. A staff member or club representative will approach the person breaching the policy and ask them to refrain from the behaviour and remind them about the policy and why it matters. 3. If an offence continues, a senior club member will verbally warn them again and hand over a formally written letter or behaviour contract to sign and return. The letter will outline the Anti-bullying Policy and state that if the person continues the behaviour they will be asked to leave. 4. If the bullying does continue then the patron will be reported directly to the State or Territory Cricket Association and asked to leave the club.
