Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. For more information please see: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/anhat/index.html Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Approved Conservation Advice (Including Listing Advice) for the Eucalypt Woodlands of the Western Australian Wheatbelt
Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) Approved Conservation Advice (including listing advice) for the Eucalypt Woodlands of the Western Australian Wheatbelt 1. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee (the Committee) was established under the EPBC Act and has obligations to present advice to the Minister for the Environment (the Minister) in relation to the listing and conservation of threatened ecological communities, including under sections 189, 194N and 266B of the EPBC Act. 2. The Committee provided its advice on the Eucalypt Woodlands of the Western Australian Wheatbelt ecological community to the Minister as a draft of this conservation advice. In 2015, the Minister accepted the Committee’s advice, and adopted this document as the approved conservation advice. 3. The Minister amended the list of threatened ecological communities under section 184 of the EPBC Act to include the Eucalypt Woodlands of the Western Australian Wheatbelt ecological community in the critically endangered category. It is noted that Western Australia lists components of this ecological community as threatened. 4. A draft conservation advice for this ecological community was made available for expert and public comment for a minimum of 30 business days. The Committee and Minister had regard to all public and expert comment that was relevant to the consideration of the ecological community. 5. This approved conservation advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time it was approved; this includes scientific literature, advice from consultations, and existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this ecological community. Description of the native vegetation under application Vegetation Beard vegetation associations have been mapped for the whole of Western Australia. One Beard vegetation association is Description located within the application area (GIS Database): Beard vegetation association 516: Shrublands; mallee scrub, black marlock. Rick Botanical Consultants (Rick, 2016) conducted a flora and vegetation survey over the application in 2009 and 2016. Rick (2016) described and identified the following six vegetation types: Eucalyptus kondininensis (Kondinin blackbutt) Woodland The Kondinin blackbutt woodland occurs on higher ground. The understorey consists of a mid-dense layer of shrubs to 0.5m including Atriplex paludosa (frequent), Enchylaena tomentosa , Threlkeldia diffusa, Templetonia sulcata, Maireana brevifolia , Tecticornia syncarpa , Frankenia ?tetrapetala , Disphyma crassifolium , Rhagodia crassifolia , Rhagodia preissii , Sclerolaena diacantha and Wilsonia rotundifolia . Scattered shrubs to 2.5m of Pittosporum angustifolium , Lycium australe and Hakea preissii were also recorded. Tecticornia syncarpa (samphire) was prominent in degraded areas to the south east. The following seven vegetation associations were recorded within the application area (Terratree, 2018): EuMpMa: Tall open woodland of Eucalyptus urna and Eucalyptus extensa over Melaleuca pauperiflora subsp. pauperiflora, Melaleuca adnata and Melaleuca thyoides shrubland over low sparse Microcybe albiflora, Exocarpos aphyllus and Olearia muelleri understorey; EeMsWc: Low mallee open woodland of Eucalyptus eremophila subs eremophila and Eucalyptus pileata over shrubland of Melaleuca scalena over low understorey of Westringia cephalantha var. cephalantha, Leucopogon fimbriatus and Hibbertia gracillipes. Lateritic sandy gravels; EsDnEd: Tall open forest of Eucalyptus salmonophloia over mallee woodland of Eucalyptus yilgarnensis over open shrubland of Daviesia nematophylla, Dodonaea stenozyga, Templetonia rossii and Santalum acuminatum over low understorey of Eremophila decipiens, Acacia intricata and Acacia deficiens. -

Webb Science [)ivision, Department of Conservation ,1Ild Land Management, 1)0, Box 51 Wanneroo, Western Australia 6065, /\ustralia Abstract - Six hundred and eightv-two quad rats were located ,.lCross the Western Australian wheatbelt and adjacent regions to cover as much of the geographical, edaphic and geomorphological variation of the terrestrial plant communities as possible. The study area covered 230,000 km' or 70% of the South West Botanical Province, one of the world's 25 biodiversity hotspots. It included all or part of the six biogeographical regions centred on the wheatbelt. The native vegetation in the study area is highly fragmented with 74'1., having been cleared for agriculture. Clearing has not been uniform; more extensive areas of bushland remain along the southern and western margins. A total of 2609 taxa of vascular plants in 103 families was recorded from the quad rats. The frequencv p,lttern followed a lognormal distribution. At a scale of 400 m', there \vas little difference in species richness between woodland, mallee and shrubl,lIld formations but those on duplex soils had lower species richness than those on deep sand, Iaterite and granik soils. Over 60';:, of taxa were recorded in fewer than five quad rats. These uncommon taxa were not randomlv distributed but concentrated at the periphery of the study area, particularly in the west and south. -
