In the 1930s, President Jud Cain led the college to growth by providing work opportunities for young people to pay for room and board while receiving a quality education . President George McLendon, or “Mr . Mac” as he was affectionately known, began serving in 1938 and continued growing the college . The 1940s brought on beautification and construction initiatives . In 1945, the GI Bill changed the face of the community college campus . Veterans took advantage of the opportunity to attend college and enrolled in vocational & technical programs that provided important skills and job training . • Padding the Stats: a Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations
Padding the Stats: A Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations Evan Hsia1, Jaewon Lee2 and Anton T. Dahbura3 Department of Computer Science Johns Hopkins University Abstract This paper presents the concept of Meaningless Game-Situations (MGS) in Major League Baseball (MLB), defined as situations in which a team has a 95% chance or greater of winning the game given the score at that particular inning in the game. We determine the run differentials for each inning that yield a 95% chance or greater of winning the game based on 2013-2016 MLB statistics and look at individual batter performances under MGS. We argue that including a split for MGS in major baseball statistical references should be considered. I. Introduction Hope springs eternal, especially in the game of baseball. But should it? Perhaps the absence of a game clock in baseball, unlike other major sports, creates the illusion that anything is possible, and in particular that one’s team can overcome even the largest of deficits, even late in the game. And, indeed, significant comebacks from behind are possible, but are so unlikely that in some cases they’re considered to be historic. For instance, in the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies on June 8, 1989 the Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. The Pirates’ radio broadcaster, Jim Rooker, proclaimed that if the Phillies were to come back from the 10-run deficit he would “walk home”. As fate would have it, the Phillies ended up winning the game 15-11, prompting Mr.

The UCLA baseball program has sent eight players to play for the USA Baseball National Team a total of 10 times, beginning with the selection of Shane Mack in 1984. Most recently, former UCLA shortstop Brandon Crawford helped the U.S. National Team capture its second consecutive FISU (International University Sports Federation) World Championship in the summer of 2006. Crawford’s selection in 2006 marked the first time a Bruin had been named since Karp, a right-handed pitcher, competed for the national team in 2000. The 2006 U.S. National Team finished its summer campaign with a 28-2-1 mark and successfullyl defended its gold medal won in the 2004 FISU Tournament in Taiwan. UCLA’s student-athletes have not been the only individuals affiliated with the U.S. National Team. FALL OF THE ROCKET: STEROIDS IN BASEBALL AND THE CASE AGAINST ROGER CLEMENS DANIEL HEALEY* INTRODUCTION - THE ROCKET ON THE HILL Athletes who are chemically propelled to victory do not merely overvalue winning, they misunderstand why winning is properly valued .... Drugs that make sport exotic, by radical intrusions into the body, drain sport of its exemplary power by making it a display of chemistry rather than character. In fact, it becomes a display of some chemists' virtuosity and some athletes' bad character. - George F. Will1 On February 13, 2008, Roger Clemens (Clemens) traveled to Capitol Hill to clear his name. A seven-time Cy Young Award-winning pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros, "the Rocket" had come to the end of his career, but only the beginning of his legal and media troubles. In December 2007, Clemens's trainer, Brian McNamee (McNamee), had implicated his former employer as a steroids user in the "Mitchell Report," the definitive account of the proliferation of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in Major League Baseball (MLB).2 After facing two months of intense media scrutiny, Clemens traveled to the Hill to testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform (the "Committee") that he had never used PEDs.

SABR Collegiate Baseball Committee Newsletter Winter 2017 Society for American Baseball Research Chairman’s Letter Although the 2017 intercollegiate baseball season nears its mid-point, this is the Winter edition of our newsletter. This is the issue where we attempt to document all the players with a collegiate baseball connection who made their Major League debut in 2016. Among the anomalies in this year’s list is a player drafted from a school he never played for, Andy Burns who attended Arizona State when drafted, but never played a varsity game for the Wildcats and Dustin Mollekin who attended Lethbridge College in Alberta, Canada, but played for a team unofficially affiliated with both the two year and four year colleges in Lethbridge. Accompanying this newsletter are attachments containing corrections, for both Major and Minor League players, to the collegiate information submitted to Base- ball-Reference.
