2 HINDSCCSPORTS.COM MACJC NJCAA Region XXIII State Champions 2014 Champion 2010, 2012 & 2015 2014 National Champion Finalist 2017 EAGLES Hinds Community College celebrates 100 Years

Our history began in September 1917 when Hinds County Agricultural High School opened in the small town of Raymond . These humble beginnings included an Administration Building, two dormitories and a dairy barn, eight faculty members and 117 students . Fast forward 100 years later and you have the largest community college and the fourth largest institution of higher learning in the state of Mississippi .

Through it all, Hinds has remained true to the mission: to provide a quality and affordable education . Hinds has enjoyed the tenure of six distinctive presidents, each bringing their own improvements and expansions to the college .

In the 1920s, President R .E .L . Sutherland transitioned Hinds into a junior college .

In the 1930s, President Jud Cain led the college to growth by providing work opportunities for young people to pay for room and board while receiving a quality education .

President George McLendon, or “Mr . Mac” as he was affectionately known, began serving in 1938 and continued growing the college .

The 1940s brought on beautification and construction initiatives . In 1945, the GI Bill changed the face of the community college campus . Veterans took advantage of the opportunity to attend college and enrolled in vocational & technical programs that provided important skills and job training .

The 1950s were the golden age of football, and the 1954 team reached unprecedented heights with the Eagles claiming a national championship after winning the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif .

During the 1960s, the leadership passed from Mr . Mac to President Robert Mayo . The baby boomers reached college age, and consequently Hinds’ enrollment boomed, topping 2,000 for the first time . Mayo extended the campus by adding new branches in Jackson and Vicksburg .

The 1970s brought on Hinds’ sixth and current president, Dr . Clyde Muse . Dr . Muse has continued this path of growth and expansion, adding Utica, Rankin and the Nursing/Allied Health Center in the 1980s and changing the name from Hinds Junior College to Hinds Community College to better reflect the college’s expanded mission .

The 1990s brought new programs and the 2000s brought a virtual network to take online classes . Traditional academic classes remain an integral part of the college experience . However, the demand for career and technical programs continues to mushroom as business and industry standards have evolved and require a higher level of education .

Today the college remains true to its original functions: to make education accessible and affordable to the common citizen . Relying on this fundamental formula, Hinds can look forward to further generations of service to the community, state and the nation . Each day Dr . Muse provides steady leadership and support to more than 1,500 faculty and staff members and nearly 30,000 students annually . He personifies the true commitment of leadership and carrying out the mission established 100 years ago .

As we celebrate our 100th year, it is clear that Hinds Community College has much to be proud of… Join us in Celebrating 100 years of Community Inspired Service and continue to follow the inspirational story of a great institution with great leaders . If you would like to part of our celebrations, the Hinds Community College Foundation is accepting contributions to the Centennial Fund . Corporate Sponsorship opportunities are also available . The Eagles fielded a young team a year ago, but those freshmen, who are now sophomores, gained valuable experience . The 2017 edition of the Eagles features 11 who have at least competed in one season of college baseball . That veteran leadership will pay dividends for a squad that looks to make a deep into the postseason . Leading the way for the veteran pitching staff is Adam Jackson (Clinton) . Jackson finished the 2016 campaign with 48 , while only allowing 21 earned runs in 50 1. innings . The savvy throwing left-hander signed with the University of Southern Mississippi during the early signing period . Darrius Wright (Yazoo City), an Alabama State University signee, is also expected to be a key factor to the Eagle pitching staff . Wright uses his electric fastball and hard slider to keep hitters off balance . In 2016, Wright struck out 40 batters in 39 .2 innings . Quinton Logan (Natchez) returns for his sophomore season and will play many roles for the Eagles . He returns as the Eagles’ leading hitter from the 2016 season . Logan will also be a vital piece to the pitching staff as he will be asked to be both a starter and a reliever for the Eagles this season . Logan signed with Louisiana Tech during the fall 2016 early signing Quinton Logan (7) period . On the offensive side of things, Head Coach Sam Temple is looking for returners Jackson Mitchell (Brandon) and Acy Owen (Brandon) to provide some leadership with their bats . Jackson Mitchell is a smooth outfielder who uses his speed to be a real threat during ball games . Mitchell can for a high average with his ability to hit to all fields and can also provide some power to the lineup . Mitchell signed with Oral Roberts University during the early signing period . Acy Owen, a Tulane University signee, is a catcher who blocks well and has a quick release behind the plate . Owen hits from the left side and runs really well, especially for a catcher . Owen is the leader of the team and shows it day in and day out .

6 HINDSCCSPORTS.COM MACJC NJCAA Region XXIII State Champions 2014 Champion 2010, 2012 & 2015 2014 National Champion Finalist 2017 EAGLES 2017 PREVIEW The Eagles received three Division I transfers in the offseason . Ethan Daily (Oak Ridge, La ). is a left-handed who uses his power fastball and big breaking ball to keep hitters guessing . Daily signed with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock . Kyle Schimpf (Covington, La ). is a corner infielder who swings a big bat from the left side . Schimpf will be looked upon to bring power to the Eagle lineup . He is the younger brother of San Diego Padre second baseman, Ryan Schimpf . Braedon Barrett (Lake Charles, La ). transferred to Hinds from Northwestern State University . Barrett is an athletic infielder who has smooth hands and a strong arm . He is a switch hitter and is expected to be a consistent hitter for the Eagles this season . Barrett signed with Tulane University in the early signing period . Members of the freshman class are loaded with talent . All are expected to step up and play a major role on the team this season . On the mound, Caleb Morgan (Grenada) and Tyler Trussell (Brandon) are expected to pitch big innings for Eagles this season . Nathan Babb (Brandon) is a dynamic outfielder who is one of the fastest players in the league . His speed will definitely be a difference maker in the Eagle lineup . JOE G. MOSS FIELD

Joe G . Moss Field serves as the home field for the Hinds Eagles baseball team . During Sam Temple’s tenure many improvements to Moss Field have been made, with more to come in the near future .

The lighting system for Moss Field was built in 1999, along with coaches’ offices, press box area and concession stand and bathroom areas . Since that time, the chain link backstop at Moss Field has been replaced with a three-foot high backstop complete with netting, black vinyl fencing along the first and third base lines and brick dugouts with storage rooms at each end .

In 2007, the outfield was completely redone with a full sprinkler system installed, along with the planting of Hy- brid Bermuda grass . The home plate area also saw an improvement, as a halo circle was added to protect the outer lining of the home plate circle . In 2015, brick columns on the fencing were added in foul territory at Moss Field .

Future improvements at Joe G . Moss Field include enclosing the grandstand area with a new roof, a locker room and new coaches’ offices on site . The Eagles currently dress on the first floor of Robert T . Mayo Fieldhouse .
