Air and Baggage Information

These are estimated flight times. Times could fluctuate slightly

CHARTER FLIGHTS 6/3 - Private Charter 1 ½ hour flight from JNB to Dulini 6/7 - Private Charter 15 minute flight from Dulini to Cheetah Plains 6/14- Private Charter 15 minute flight from Mala Mala to Makanyi

SOUTH AFRICAN AIR FLIGHT 6/17 - SAA 45 minute flight from HDS (Hoedspruit) to JNB

Important “NEW” South African Entry & Exit Requirements depending on the flights you book you may need a yellow fever shot.

Yellow Fever and Public Health South Africa’s new yellow fever law extends to travelers flying to South Africa via yellow fever designated countries. If your transit stop in a yellow fever designated country is longer than 12 hours, you MUST HAVE a yellow fever vaccination certificate. This includes unexpected deviations to yellow fever designated countries. See http://www.cdc.gov/yellowfever/maps/ This could be a particular nuisance for travelers from the United States, whose flight itineraries often include refueling stops in Accra, Ghana or Dakar, Senegal; many passengers are often unaware of these refueling stops, because they are not required to change seats, and both legs of the itinerary have the same flight number. The new provision also includes rare instances when a plane makes an unscheduled landing in a yellow fever designated country, so it may be a good idea for travelers to go ahead and obtain a yellow fever vaccination prior to travel, if only to guard against any potential flight difficulties. In addition, all travelers must carry their original yellow fever vaccination cards; immigration inspectors generally do not accept letters, scans, copies, etc. as valid documents. Yellow fever vaccinations are no longer administered at South African ports of entry for the purpose of entering the country. The policy requires travelers to obtain a yellow fever vaccination at least 10 days prior to arrival in South Africa. BAGGAGE DETAILS Your maximum combined luggage allowance is a total of 44lbs per person. This is due to the short flights between lodges.

 You are on SAFARI jeans and safari gear is all you need. Remember you wear your safari clothes to dinner no need to change at the safari camps.  Free Laundry everywhere.  It is okay to wear the same clothes again and again. You will not be the only one doing that!  After you go once you realize this weight limit is easy to maintain – see the Packing and Clothing pages 6-10.

What kind of bag to bring? What works best is a soft-sided bag for the game parks. We suggest the following luggage:  Rules have changed at the JNB airport. All checked bags must have a hard base and no long duffle straps. It can be the rolling type as long as it is hard on one side.  Personal bag: Camera, backpack, cosmetic or small bag.

Open Seating Safari Vehicles Just like dining with different not know each other there is more people on a Regent cruise, this is distance between the guests and the same thing on safari with the Rangers in each Land Rover. OPEN SEATING SAFARI VEHICLES. In fact, by trading vehicles and This plan usually works better for getting to know all of the Rangers our group than the normal it truly enhances the safari situation of the same people with experience. the same Ranger for the entire stay at a camp. It is better for everyone to experience the different rangers

If there is a Ranger that is The last few safaris we have found fantastic and one that is average we want to trade around with the it is not really fair to those that end TIPPING – Tips are included in your vehicles. It is fun to go out with up with the average Ranger for safari fare and we will tip the different people in the group and the entire length of their stay. That appropriate amount to the camp experience the different Rangers could be YOU with the average who will then share those tips with all and Trackers. Ken and I the Rangers, Trackers, and Staff. In most lodges, each with everyone at least once and issue. guest goes out with each Ranger we have really enjoyed that twice during the stay. Focus on experience. The group will have which Ranger you go out with the whole lodge and we always rather than the other people in seem to mingle with all the your vehicle. Rangers, whereas when people do

GAME DRIVES Normally a Ranger will have the same group of people and focus on finding game that his particular group of people has yet to see. As we move vehicles, this cannot be handled as well as it is not the same group on every drive. However, since we have many nights on safari this should not be an issue as we will have enough time to see everything. If a group wishes to focus on lions, elephants, or another animal they could all go together and share with their Ranger what animals you wish to focus on finding. The hard to find animals are cheetah and wild dogs but hopefully we will be lucky.

TIPPING – The Rangers and Trackers are perfectly fine with one big tip shared among them. They said that as long as they knew upfront that was the plan, then they would not have a problem.

Etiquette for Open Seating Land Rovers:

 Be prepared to go on game drives with all of the Rangers at the camp – share your favorite Ranger. Ngaire will give direction on this procedure at each camp.  Be prepared to go on game drives with different members of the group.  If you do not need to be in a certain place in the Land Rover, please take turns from the front row to the back row. If someone does have a medical problem, bad back, etc. then please let them sit up front for all game drives. Be considerate and polite to your fellow safari companions.  If two or three couples really want to be together on all of their game drives, then simply let Ngaire know and she can work this out if you all agree.

Clothing, Packing, Luggage, & Storage

Laundry is complimentary at all of the game lodges

For the Game Parks Clothing Packing List for the Safari Portion of the Trip

 Two to three pair of pants - Jeans or Columbia type safari pants (safari pants are typically lighter weight than jeans)  Two to three shirts – Long sleeve shirts where you can roll-up the sleeves work well or Columbia style safari shirts (wear one – wash one each day – one to spare)  Three pairs of socks  Underwear, this is light – bring extra and a MESH bag for laundering (see below)  Rain and/or warm windbreaker type jacket  Sweater or pullover for layering during the morning and evenings where there are cooler temperatures  Pair of fleece gloves for the mornings and evenings  Two hats – one warm for the mornings and evenings one safari style hat for the sun.  If you change at night which is completely NOT necessary –most of the group will not be changing, then . One or two pair of washable slacks for the evening . Two to three shirts or tops for the evening . One change of shoes for the evening NO SANDALS - ALWAYS WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT MOST GAMEPARKS WILL NOT WASH UNDERWEAR UNLESS IT IS IN A SMALL MESH LAUNDRY BAG WHICH IS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT STORES LIKE TARGET IN THE LAUNDRY SECTION OR DEPARTMENT STORES IN THE LINGERIE SECTION.

It can be very cold in the mornings and late evenings particularly as you are driving in an open vehicle. The temperature range is from about 40 to 80 during the day. When the sun is out, it is warm, and when the sun goes down, it cools off very quickly.

I suggest basic safari clothes. Columbia type sports shirts and pants for everyone. The safari shirts that work best have long sleeves with the fasteners to roll up and button, creating a short sleeve shirt. They offer protection from the sun and are warmer in the mornings and evenings - just roll up the sleeves during the heat of the day. This type of clothing is very comfortable. You may also wear slacks or jeans if you prefer, with regular tops. Keep the colors very neutral. The Rangers suggest neutral colors for the game drives -NO BRIGHT REDS OR BLUES. Khaki, white, brown and olive green is best. Bring a jacket to wear in the mornings and evenings, and if you are cold natured, a sweater or fleece to wear under the jacket. A MAXIMUM of three daytime safari outfits is all you will need since you can send in laundry.

Two hats are necessary. You will need a safari or sun hat with a strap to protect you from the sun, with a brim to cover your face. This is particularly important to wear in the vehicles while driving in the parks, since the tops are left open for game viewing and photography. A Columbia safari hat for approximately $20-30 works well. They pack flat and are comfortable to wear. You will also need a warm hat to keep your head and ears warm early morning and into the evening. NYALA – ELEPHANTS LIONS LEOPARDS INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCES 7

Evenings in the game parks are VERY casual. Most people do not change from the game drive for dinner. We suggest you stay at the lodge and just have a drink and then dinner. It is always fairly rushed coming in from the game drive, with dinner in 30 minutes. If you wish a change of clothes in the evening for dinner, do keep it simple and co-ordinate one pair of pants with different tops. Women - don’t wear sandals. They may be in style, but you are in Africa and closed toe shoes are far more practical. Little ants can bite your toes! This is particularly important for the Boma or bush dinner. The Boma and bush dinners are buffet style outside dining experience on sand or grassy areas in a specially decorated area. CLOSED TOE shoes only, please. Please understand dinner is at 7:00 pm and in order to be fair to everyone if you elect to go to your room and change clothes, we will not wait for you to start dinner. Accessories Packing List  Sunglasses  Good binoculars (one pair each if you think you do not want to share)  Kleenex - small packages  Chapstick or lip gloss  Insect repellant (the camps do provide it and at this time of the year it will hardly be necessary, however it is good to have on hand just in case). We suggest the towelette-type in individual foil packets you can just keep in your pocket to use if necessary, rather than carrying repellant that may spill in your bags. OFF! Deep Woods Towelettes work great  Sunscreen  Flashlight – KLT will provide two “glow in the dark” small flashlights with your final documents  Field guides or reading materials  Pen and paper, or writing journal/diary  If you like to play cards, bring playing cards with you

A pair of sunglasses is a necessity. If you wear prescription glasses, take an extra pair, and a copy of the prescription. Carry binoculars for added pleasure in game viewing. You can share these, or each person can bring their own pair. A lightweight, eight-power, pair of binoculars would probably be adequate and easy to hold.

It is advisable to have insect repellent which contains DEET. We suggest the OFF! Deep Woods Towelettes. These are not messy and you can keep in your pocket in the foil package to use, if necessary. We have found these to be less messy than the tubes or lotions, which leaked and always had to be in plastic bags. Game parks all provide insect repellant in your room. Also, the WetOnes type anti-bacterial towelettes are always useful to freshen up while in the bush, as are Kleenex packets. Chapstick or moisturizing creams are a must for the dry climate.

Extra items to consider: Swimsuit for the private plunge pools at the game parks but be warned the water will be COLD. A traveling alarm clock. Ziploc bags or packing cubes are very handy when using duffle bags. It helps to separate items.

How to pack your safari bag: After many safaris, we have found that if you pack all your safari items in expandable cubes, they are easier to find and unpack. We’ve found the REI brand to be the best. https://www.rei.com/product/130065/rei-co-op- expandable-packing-cube-set-smallmediumlarge We just roll up our safari pants and shirts, and put them all in the cubes. These clothes are not finely pressed items, and the wrinkles drop out quickly once the clothing is put on and the cube stops things from moving around so they actually wrinkle less. All underwear in one cube, socks in another, shirts in another, etc. You can even use one as a dirty clothes bag. It is like having drawers in your duffle bag. You can rummage around in your duffle bag, and things do not get as messed up or as wrinkled. We always bring extra Ziploc bags to use for all types of things that come up while you are travelling. It is worth the time to pack this way.

NYALA – ELEPHANTS LIONS LEOPARDS INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCES 8

Your maximum combined luggage allowance is a total of 44 lbs per person! This is due to the short flights between lodges.

Luggage Most people in my last group wished they had not Duffle Bags work best brought as much luggage. It is a hassle every time To comply with new JNB baggage rules, the duffle you change venues. Here is a synopsis of my must have one hard side. Moving bags into safari recommendations. vehicles for transfers duffle or soft sided type bags work better than hard sided bags, but to comply with WE WILL ALL HAVE THE SAME LUGGAGE WEIGHT JNB rules one side must be hard. CONSTRAINTS FOR THE SMALL CHARTER FLIGHTS. In most cases you will not even need 44lbs. Our SO IT IS OKAY IF YOU WEAR THE SAME CLOTHES AGAIN luggage normally weighs about 30 lbs and it is the AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!!!!! toiletries that weigh the most.

What bags to bring. You will need a small soft-sided bag for the game parks. We suggest the following luggage:

 A duffle with one hard side per person for use for the game parks: It can be the rolling type as long as it is still soft on three sides. The wheel supports will work as the flat/hard side. Remember that the rollers are a lot of extra weight. No long duffle type strap handles are allowed by JNB airport & they require one hard side.  Personal bag: Camera, backpack, cosmetic or small bag.  Caution: A heavy camera bag may be weighed and count as part of your luggage allowance. Packing Checklist To assist you in planning for your trip, we have prepared the following ‘suggested’ packing list for the safari. It is meant as a guideline only. Everything You Want to Know About Packing – Generally  Plan what you’re going to take at least two weeks in advance. This gives you time to purchase any items you need, thoughtfully, not in a panic, and perhaps even on sale.  Lay Out your clothes on a bed, then put one-third to one-half back in the closet. Forget them! Most people take more than they will wear, more than they can comfortably carry. You really only need a maximum of three outfits for the safari part of your trip. You can have your laundry done each night. Very casual clothes are all you will need.  Safari Clothes: The clothes made by Columbia sportswear do work nicely for safari. They are comfortable and cool. However, you can actually go on safari in blue jeans. You are in a land rover so your legs don’t show to the animals. The only rule of thumb is not to wear bright colors. The land rovers and people need to blend into the scenery, so khaki, olive green, black or brown are the best colors. No hot pink, red or bright blue, etc. Buy safari clothes, if you wish, but it is not necessary. At night for dinner, people wear only casual type clothing, jeans are fine in the safari camps. NO jacket or nice slacks are required for men at the game parks.  Luggage Restrictions/Weight Limits For Charter Flights: For the safari part of our trip and the charter flights, you must have soft sided bags (with one flat/hard side as dictated by JNB airport) including carry-on bags and back packs. We will only be allowed 44lbs total per person for the game parks. These smaller planes will not take hard sided luggage. However, you will not need all that much in the way of clothing for safari. You are limited to 44lbs. You can also carry a camera case, back pack or small personal bag. These may be weighed as well as part of your 44lbs. Everyone will be in the same situation, so don’t worry about wearing the same clothing– you find most people will all be doing the exact same thing.  Rain Gear: The land rovers carry water ponchos and blankets, if you are caught in the rain or if it is unseasonably cool. You will have all the coverage you need. I do suggest taking a fleece or pullover and/or rain jacket to keep you warm in the mornings and to shelter you from any light rain you might encounter. This is the DRY season, rain is unlikely.  Weather, Temperature and Appropriate Clothing: The mornings will be cold. The days warm up considerably and the evenings cool down significantly, so layering is the best idea. Temperatures normally range from 40 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Wear comfortable walking shoes and pack ONLY one pair of extra closed toed shoes.  Do NOT bring any expensive jewelry in fact NO jewelry at all is best. An inexpensive watch will be fine.  Packing Items in soft packing cubes bags is great for safaris. We put socks, underwear and all clothing in these cubes. It makes it easier than having to rummage around and find things and it does help with the wrinkles. REI brand to be best https://www.rei.com/product/130065/rei-co-op-expandable-packing-cube-set- smallmediumlarge  Roll and Stuff socks, underwear and belts into sides of your luggage, or into your shoes or place in the soft packing cubes or in plastic Ziploc bags.  Miniaturize: Take smaller bottles of after-shave, shampoo, toothpaste, and lotions (Note: All these things will be supplied in every place we stay). Double pack all toiletries in plastic, leak-proof bags. Container Store has guaranteed NON-LEAK containers that are fantastic. I always use these for all my travel. Put prescriptions and medications in smaller containers as well, if possible.  Divide your items into two categories—carry-on and non-carry-on.

In your carry-on bag, pack items that you can’t manage without: medications, extra eyeglasses or contact lenses, reading material, snacks, camera, map, sunglasses, makeup, etc.

Items Not to Forget!!  Passport  Extra contact lenses or eye  Extra batteries for your digital  Credit Cards glasses camera  Medications, including  Travel alarm clock  Keys for your car, if parked at Malarone if you are taking  Extra plastic Ziploc bags airport and house keys that  Small Flashlight that KLT gives  Electrical Plug Adapter  Name, phone & fax numbers you of doctors  Camera battery charger

Voltage & Electrical Appliances Throughout Africa usual voltage is 220-240 AC. A power converter will be necessary for appliances that run only on 110-120 AC or you will burn up your appliances. A few hotels may have 110 volt outlets but most game parks will only have the 220-240 volt outlets. The game parks will provide a plug adapter but usually not a power converter. Here is a web site you can order a plug adapter from. http://www.walkabouttravelgear.com/elect.htm

The plug adapter can be ordered for $7.00, there may be web sites with cheaper prices. To use your appliances, you need to be sure that your hairdryer, curling iron or battery charger is DUAL VOLTAGE and automatically changes voltage when plugged in. Many small appliances are now dual voltage as are most travel items, but you must be sure that your appliances are dual voltage so you can just use an adapter and not a converter.

The United States and most of the Western hemisphere use electrical systems operating at 110-120 volts. Almost every other country uses 220-240 volts as a standard. South Africa uses 220 – 240 AC.

An adapter is simply a connector that changes the plug shape to match the outlet. It does not change the voltage or electrical output in any way. If you know that the plug shape is the only difference between your equipment and the electrical system you are planning to use and that your appliance is DUAL VOLTAGE, then an adapter is all you need. KLT will supply you with an adapter along with your final documents.

A voltage converter/transformer changes the voltage from 220 to 110 voltage. If your equipment requires a specific voltage, then you need a converter. Converters use an electronic switch to approximate 110v by rapidly cutting on and off the current received from a 220v source. This is okay for some electrical items like hair dryers but not good for anything electronic (something with a computer chip in it). Also, converters should not be used for anything that is going to be plugged in longer than a few minutes. Confusing an adapter and a converter: The converter changes the voltage from 220 to 110 volts to allow you to use 110 volt appliances. Do not confuse this with an adapter which just changes the plug configuration, NOT THE VOLTAGE!! I purchased and use this “converter” and it works really well. It is lightweight and I use it in Europe constantly. This changes the voltage from 220 to 110 volts, so that I can use my favorite hair appliances. You will need an “adapter” to fit in the South African socket as well https://www.amazon.com/BONAZZA-Universal-Travel-Adapter-Converter/dp/B0776B9L49

Often the rooms have adapters, but you may need more than one. It never hurts to have a spare. With camera batteries charging, computers running, curling irons and all the electrical appliances you may have - one adapter may not be enough. IF YOU CHECK YOUR BAG…  Avoid Overpacking: Oversized bags lose their shock absorption and zippers can break when the bag hits the conveyor belt or other hard surfaces.  Add something with your name, destination, phone number and/or home address inside the bag.  Remove Straps and Hooks from bags. They can get caught somewhere in the baggage system.

Tip: If you want to complain about baggage, an airline, service, refunds, write: Aviation Consumer Protection Division, US Dept of Transportation, 1200 New Jersey Ave SE, Washington DC 20590. See also: https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer

Usual Concerns for First-Time Safari Goers by Ngaire The first time I went to Africa, I was concerned about four major issues. Was it safe? What about human threat, animal attacks, vaccinations required and Malaria issues? What about bugs and snakes is this a problem? Would I be comfortable, how hot and cold are the temperatures? What about the accommodations, what should we expect? Are the game drives safe and how long will the vehicle stay in the bush? By now, I have made multiple trips to Africa; so let me address these issues. Safety There is nowhere in the world in which you are 100% safe. In South Africa and the different areas of the country, the comfort and safety level can vary. Let me address some typical areas of concern that you may have for this trip and briefly address what you can expect of a typical day on safari in South Africa.

GAME PARK AREAS - The game parks are in the bush, YELLOW FEVER - Important “NEW” South African Entry & and the people who work in the camps are delightful. Exit Requirements The animals are so accustomed to the land rovers that South Africa requires proof of they actually ignore you. Delicate Subject of Ladies Bush Bathroom

Game drives last about two to three hours. The lodges always feed you or give you something to drink before you leave and then stop halfway in the mornings for coffee and hot chocolate or drinks at sunset in the evening. Remember you are in a bumpy vehicle during the game drives. What to do when the urge to visit a bathroom arises?? Men have it so easy - not quite the same for the ladies. This actually is a serious question and the fear of this situation can cause a woman not to go on safari.

There are several products on the market that can help ladies deal with this situation.  Funnels that “make us into a man” for the purpose of a bathroom visit.  Plastic bags called “travel johns” that turn urine into an instant gel inside a sack, it will not spill nor will there be any odor. You can put it in your coat and dispose of it when you get back to the lodge. I know it sounds gross but it really is not, and you can use them more than once if necessary, on the game drive.

Quite a few different products like this are available. Simply search for “disposable urine bags” on Amazon or Google. Or go directly to the Travel John website for a list of stores near you http://www.traveljohn.com/stores-near-you/ that carry their products or a list of online retailers, including Amazon that carry their products, https://www.amazon.com/s?k=travel+john&ref=nb_sb_noss_1 .

Order it and use it at home before you leave so you become comfortable with using whatever it is that you selected. This is much easier than experimenting in the field.

I used these products for my first couple of safaris and as I traveled more I decided to practice squatting. I now have it down pat and it is no problem at all for me to simply squat. Is it safe to “go” behind a bush? You are in Africa, what about snakes and spiders? First of all, these critters are more afraid of you than you are of them. The Rangers have told us that when we walk we create vibrations and these vibrations cause anything in the vicinity to move away. The Ranger will normally stop somewhere and check the area first to be sure it is safe for a bathroom break. Animals are large enough to be seen and the Rangers know the safest places to stop.

Personally, I like going on the road behind the vehicle. No grasses, you can see around you and it is what I prefer. I just say “can you stop so I can use the facilities behind the vehicle”. No one looks - it is private and so easy.

At first it is embarrassing to say, “I need to use the facilities.”, however don’t worry as you don’t want to be uncomfortable. A good Ranger will ask periodically but they don’t always do that as they may anticipate that the guest will ask if the need arises. We all need to partake in this activity as it is human nature. Simply try to overcome your concerns about this subject, so you can relieve yourself when necessary and really enjoy the game drive experience.

Ahh, to be at man at times.

Some of the questions and answers in this section may be repetitive to other areas of this document, however they are important details that we feel bear repeating. We strongly encourage you to read all thoroughly.

Tipping When Ken and Ngaire are with you during the trip they will tip for everyone. This includes luggage handling, transfers and the tips at the game parks for the Staff, Ranger and Tracker. Any time Ken and Ngaire are NOT with you and a tip is required you need to pay that personally. For instance, if you are met at the airport or luggage is bought to your hotel room by the bellhop, then you need to tip directly. Normal guidelines for tipping in South Africa are 10% to 15% for the service rendered and $1 to $2 per bag for porterage. Malaria All the game lodges are in the Game Reserves we are visiting are low-risk malaria areas. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended when visiting a malaria area. and the private game areas around Kruger are all malaria areas. Malarone is what Ken and have used and we have had no side effects, whatsoever. Larium has been reported to have BAD side effects. I would NOT TAKE LARIUM. Check with your doctor, but be sure you are not given a generic that is in fact Larium as US doctors are not familiar with malaria drugs. Insist on the brand name Malarone and buy it early to be sure you get the right drug. You are not visiting in the prime mosquito season, but if you wish to be cautious you can take an anti-malarial drug. If you do have any side effects to Malarone, I suggest you stop taking it and be sure to use an insect repellant. This is NOT the mosquito season and the odds of getting bitten are not that high. I have yet to receive a mosquito bite on any of my safaris. Remember, only one type of mosquito carries malaria and it is only active from about 10:00 pm to dawn. The normal dosage is as follows: One pill per day and start the pills two days before you enter a malaria area. Take one pill every day while you are in the malaria areas and then take one pill per day for one week after you leave the malaria area. Be sure to have enough pills to complete your dosage. I have known US doctors to give different directions causing people to take more of this drug than necessary. If you are advised to do anything other than what I stated “CHECK THE DIRECTIONS” on the Malarone box - it will most likely offer the same direction I just gave you. Vaccinations There are no specific vaccination requirements for North American visitors. Please see South African information for more details. There are “NEW” regulations for Yellow Fever – see binder Usual Concerns, page 11. Weather This is considered winter time for the Game Parks. The grass is low (great for game viewing) as this is the dry season and temperatures are more comfortable levels. It is cool to cold in the morning and the evening but heats up in the afternoons. Range: 40 degrees to 80 degrees. See also pages 19-20. VISA & Passport Information No visa is required. Passports must be valid for at least six months after your return home. You DO NEED two empty regular visa pages in your passport or you can be denied entry into South Africa. Voltage & Electrical Appliances Throughout Africa usual voltage is 220-240 AC. A power converter will be necessary for appliances that run only on 110-120 AC or you will burn up your appliances. An adapter is simply a connector that changes the plug shape to match the outlet. It does not change the voltage or electrical output in any way. If you know that the plug shape is the only difference between your equipment and the electrical system you are planning to use, that your appliance is DUAL VOLTAGE, then an adapter is all you need. A converter changes the voltage from 220 to 110 voltage. Confusing an adapter and a converter- The converter changes the voltage from 220 to 110 volts to allow you to use 110 volt appliances. Do not confuse this with an adapter which just changes the plug configuration, NOT THE VOLTAGE!! Often the rooms have adapters, but you may need more than one. It never hurts to have a spare. With camera batteries charging, computers running, curling irons and all the electrical appliances you may have - one adapter may not be enough. See page 10 of this binder for more information and purchasing information. NYALA – ELEPHANTS LIONS LEOPARDS INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCES 15

Photography Notes by Ken For photographing birds and game, a telephoto lens is essential. Minimum size recommended is 200mm. With larger lenses you will get better results, but with a 500mm lens, you may have problems holding it steady. As a general rule, lenses up to 300mm can be satisfactorily hand held, but larger lenses need some form of support.

Remember that tripods are generally impractical for game photography that must be done from inside the vehicle. I have seen monopods used inside a vehicle with some success.

For digital photography, be sure to bring plenty of memory cards and an extra battery for each camera you bring. And, of course, don’t forget your battery charger. All of the battery chargers I have seen can work on 110 volts and 220 volts.

Voltage: Throughout Africa usual voltage is 220-240 AC. A power converter will be necessary for appliances that run only on 110-120 AC or you will burn up your appliances. A few hotels may have 110 volt outlets but most game parks will only have the 220-240 volt outlets. The game parks will provide a plug adapter but usually not a power converter. See page 10 of this binder for more information and purchasing information.

Remember that the one constant is the sudden speed at which the action will break. Be prepared for the unexpected and keep your camera handy.

Photographing government buildings, military stations, soldiers and certain tribes is often considered offensive and is even illegal in some cases. In all such instances, use your discretion; if in doubt, ask your Guide or Ranger.

Photo Equipment Suggestions We recommend that you bring good camera and/or video equipment which you have tested beforehand and are comfortable using. The African bush is no place to learn what all those buttons really mean. If you are taking still photographs, it is essential to take at least two cameras with you to Africa; a third for back up wouldn't hurt. If your only camera fails, you will regret not having a "Plan B." For videos, bring plenty of pre-charged batteries and an adapter for recharging. Remember that replacement parts and repairs are basically non- existent in Africa, so it's better to have than to have not.

Brand of Camera: Of course, everyone has their own camera preference, Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, they are all good. If you use a point and shoot it is preferable to have at least a 12x zoom. Some of the point and shoot cameras take great photos.

What do I take to Africa? I am often asked what equipment I use in Africa. I carry the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. I also sometimes bring another body, the Canon EOS 7D as a backup camera. My lenses are the 24-105mm wide angle and a 100x400mm zoom lens that I use on my 5D Mark III. The Sony SC-HX90V point and shoot is also in my arsenal of cameras, as it is small, handy and has a great zoom. I bring it on every trip.

A small beanbag (sometimes furnished in your safari vehicle) will stabilize your camera on the side of the vehicle.

NYALA – ELEPHANTS LIONS LEOPARDS INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCES 16

Pack your equipment in a good, soft-sided case and carry it on the plane with you. Africa can be dusty and you should protect your equipment well. Plastic bags or cloth pillowcases are ideal means of covering and storing your photographic equipment during your safari.

Africa Can Be Dusty We suggest bringing the appropriate size zip lock bags to protect your equipment from the dust. If you have an SLR camera with multiple lens and you have an extra camera body, it is a good idea to bring it with you. When you do not have to change lenses in a dusty

atmosphere you risk dust and debris contaminating the sensor of the camera. This also helps as the action is unfolding, because you have multiple lenses to choose from instantly.

Shangann Language A RANGER (also called a Field Guide) - When you are Africa has MANY different tribes with many different on a safari drive the Rangers talk on the radio. Often, languages. Where we are going in South Africa the they use Shangann names to discuss the animals. A local people use the Shangann language. He is the spotter for finding the there and the animal has gone. I think it is FUN to animals and also watches the road. Sometimes we KNOW and have the excitement of what you may get go “off road” through the bush following an animal to see. So by learning these few Shangann names of and there is NO road and the tracker tells the Ranger the most exciting animals YOU will know what they are which way to go to avoid hitting trees or big holes in talking about. General Information About Visiting South

This has been adapted for your safari group by Ngaire. Information is repeated in several areas to help you find the details you require. Passport and Visa Information A valid passport is required plus an onward or return ticket, but no pre-arranged Visa for U.S. and Canadian Citizens for a tourist stay of up to 90 days. If you are not an U. S. citizen, check with your local Consulate, for specific information.

All visitors to South Africa are required to have a minimum of two blank pages in their passport for each entry into South Africa. The blank pages enable the entry visa to be issued upon arrival. Blank pages do not include the pages reserved for "Observations" or "Amendments and Endorsements". If there is insufficient space in the passport, entry will be denied. There is NO charge for this visa. Passports must be valid for at least six months after your return home. Customs Regulations Travelers may import personal effects, used cameras, radios, firearms, one liter of liquor, two liters of wine, 200 cigarettes and 20 cigars, but all other articles are dutiable if they exceed a value of ZAR 5,000. For information regarding firearms, please visit https://www.saps.gov.za/services/flash/firearms/importation.php . There is no limit to the amount of foreign exchange that a visitor can bring into South Africa. On arrival, visitors must complete customs forms listing all their holdings of currency. On departure, visitors are allowed to take out as much as is shown on the form.

Foreigners may have the 14% VAT (Value Added Tax) refunded when they leave, but only:  For goods they have with them  If they have receipts and tax invoices available (ask the vendor for a VAT 263 form).  If the total VAT charged is more than R250.00

Obtaining a VAT refund can be a real pain to go through, so I would only consider this if you have spent a significant amount of money. There are duty free shops at Johannesburg International, Cape Town and Durban Airports. See also page 22-23. Airport and Arrival Information The principle international airport is the Johannesburg International Airport (JNB) also known as O.R. TAMBO airport, located 19 miles from downtown Johannesburg (and about the same distance to Pretoria). Cape Town’s airport (CPT) is also an international airport and located 14 miles from the city center. Health Requirements Because requirements change from time to time, it is strongly suggested that you check with your local immunization clinic, public health facility or personal physician to find out what immunizations are required and/or suggested for your overseas journey. In addition to your physician, a good source of health information for travelers is the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (the “CDC”) in Atlanta, which operates a 24- hour recorded “International Travelers’ Hotline.” You can access the “Hotline” by phoning toll-free to 888- 232-3228. Information can be mailed or faxed to you. You can also access the same information on the CDC web site at [www.cdc.gov]. IMPORTANT: There are “NEW” regulations concerning Yellow Fever vaccinations. See the page in this booklet with a large stop sign and titled Usual Concerns.

 Visitors should bring their own prescription drugs for personal conditions.  South Africa is one of the few countries in Africa where you can drink the water in major cities and eat salads or unpeeled fresh fruits, and assume Western sanitation standards are followed.  Do not swim in any lake or river in South Africa. Many are infested with a parasite called bilharzias which if left untreated, can eventually lead to death. There are also crocodiles in certain areas.  It is suggested that you bring insect repellent (preferably containing 100% DEET). Most game lodges provide insect repellant and a bug spray in all the rooms.  For the fierce sun, a good sunscreen and suntan cream are recommended, as well as a wide-brim hat. Currency The unit of currency is the Rand (ZAR), which is divided into 100 cents. Coins are available in R5, R2, R1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c, and 1c. Bank notes are available in denominations of R200, R100, R50, R20, and R10. All commercial banks, hotels, shops, etc., accept credit cards and traveler’s checks. Telephone Communication Please be advised that some hotels impose surcharges that can more than double the cost of international calls. Be sure to check the hotel policy before placing an international call from a hotel. Time Zones in relation to South African time EST plus seven hours [Plus six hours during daylight savings]. CST plus eight hours [Plus seven hours during daylight savings]. MST plus nine hours [Plus eight hours during daylight savings]. PST plus ten hours [Plus nine hours during daylight savings]. Weather The climate is mild throughout South Africa. The seasons are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere. It can snow between June and August in the mountain areas, but there is only one ski facility, which is outside Rhodes in the Eastern Cape. It generally rains in the afternoon during the austral summer (winter in the northern hemisphere) i.e. everywhere in the country, except in the Western Cape Province, where it rains during winter. September thru March is best for Cape Town. During the rest of the year, it is usually quite cool, often with rain/wind/fog conditions (too cold to lie on the beach). In the coastal belt of the Eastern Cape (including the Cape Peninsula and Garden Route), summer days are dry and sunny, with most of the rain falling in winter. March through October is really best for the game parks. This is the cool, dry non-mosquito season when the grasses are lower, and better for game viewing. It is cold in the morning and the evening, but warms up to about 80 degrees in the afternoons.

Johannesburg, at 5700 feet above sea level, can be quite cool in the winter. Coats are needed for Johannesburg, as well as for other high elevations. Sweaters are advisable for evenings everywhere else. (Windbreakers for evening game-reserve drives in the winter.) The following are average rainfall amounts and temperatures:

See page 10 of this binder for more information and purchasing information. Driving Any valid driver’s license is accepted in South Africa, provided it bears the photograph and signature of the holder, and is printed in English. Driving is on the left. Road signs and speed limits are posted in kilometers. It is compulsory to wear your seat belt. Gasoline (petrol) is expensive, and cannot be purchased with a credit card! Be prepared and carry adequate Rand to accommodate your journey. Rent cars can be arranged and delivered through your hotel. Wildlife Most visitors to South Africa enjoy the wildlife and its magnificent, unspoiled wilderness areas. The country’s terrestrial mammals are among the best on earth, numbering over 300 species ranging in size from the tiny pigmy shrew, to the imposing elephant. The "Big Five" (elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo and lion) and birdlife of more than 900 species can be seen. This broad topic cannot be addressed properly in this document. Food There are some excellent lamb, beef and seafood dishes that are offered in South Africa, as well as many Chinese, Italian, French, Portuguese and Indian restaurants, including those serving South African cuisine. In the local restaurants, try crayfish (similar to lobster) and bobotie (curried meat dish). The private Game Reserves offer wild game meat in their restaurants. Some rank South African wines and beers with the best. As a bonus, they are cheaper than imports. Any special diets can be catered to by the Game Parks which should have been noted on your guest forms. If you are uncertain that you noted it on your guest form, then please let us know immediately. Value Added Tax (VAT) Refunds Below is the official outline of how this works and the process for a refund. Since procedures do change, the following information is from the Tax Refund website https://www.taxrefunds.co.za/ . It is better to get you information directly from the website because we never do this now. The lines are always very long and it can take forever to complete the transaction. We have heard that others did not have as much trouble and the lines were not as long for them, so it may simply depend on how long the lines are when you are traveling through the airport. It is your personal decision as to whether it is worth it considering what you may have spent.

What is VAT? Visitors to South Africa who permanently reside in another country are able to claim back the 14% VAT paid on all goods purchased during their stay, provided the goods are exported on departure. For visitors departing from O R Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, Cape Town International Airport and King Shaka International Airport, Durban. Where movable goods are temporarily admitted into the RSA for the purpose of repair or servicing, movable goods and services supplied in connection therewith, may be supplied at the zero rate, provided that the non-resident has obtained a form VAT262 at the point of entry into the RSA. The non-resident may then approach the RSA vendor and based on the provisions of the VAT 262 form, duly endorsed by RSA Customs request the supply to be zero rated. The VAT 262 form is retained by the RSA vendor for record purposes. All movable goods purchased MUST be exported from the RSA within 90 days of the date of the tax invoice AND the VAT refund claim MUST be received by the VRA within 90 days of the date of export of the goods. A commission is charged to cover the administration costs of the VAT Refund Scheme. The commission is calculated at a rate of 1.3% of the VAT inclusive value of the claim, subject to a minimum charge of R10.00 and a maximum charge of R250.00 per refund. You may use the calculator on the website at https://www.taxrefunds.co.za/ to assist you in the calculation of the fee and the value of your VAT refund. JOHANNESBURG AIRPORT HOTEL

SUN INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL Johannesburg Airport

This is the nicest airport hotel at the JNB Airport. Very convenient right at the terminal. Right outside the international arrival hall a short crosswalk and you are at the Sun Intercontinental Hotel. Johannesburg is a dangerous place I personally suggest no one plans to stay there other than at this hotel at the airport.
