THE CANADIAN SENIORS’ ASSOCIATION

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SENIORS GOLF

1918-2018 s we head into the next Century of CSGA golf, there is Aplenty to be thankful for. We are now concluding a very busy year for our Association.

For 100 years the Canadian Seniors’ Golf Association has been a center for golfers age 55+ to meet new people and establish life long friendships -wide. The CSGA was founded on May 18th, 1918 with the first Annual Tournament being held at Royal Golf Club that September. The 2018 Centennial event at and Scarboro Golf and Country Club (both founding CSGA Clubs) was no different than the previous 100 with a group of Senior Men coming together to enjoy each other’s company for a few days. The original field of 81 far exceeded the Association’s expectations. This year the CSGA hosted 300 players from CSGA President, Mike Jackson across the country on the two courses. The CSGA is a National Association that has members from coast to coast. There are 789 active members including 155 emeritus members who are represented. We continue to have a strong wait list that is reviewed annually. The CSGA celebrated its Centennial throughout 2018 starting with the publication of our Centennial Book, written by London based author Jeffrey Reed. Jeffrey, Ian Gibson (Executive Director), Sheila Johnston (Secretary) and Jim Fraser (CSGA and Ontario Golf Hall of Fame Member) completed extensive research at archives to source essential resource content and photos for the book. And canvassed many golf clubs in Canada for historical material. We are extremely grateful for their efforts to produce and distribute our Centenary book. Leather Bound Our Centennial was a busy year with eight CSGA hosted 1918 CSGA Record Book Golf Canada Archives events across the country plus invitations to CSGA members for nine additional events that took place in Canada, USA & France.

To start the season the 3rd Annual Western Satellite was held at Point Grey and Vancouver Golf Club in British Columbia on May 6th & 7th. A heart felt thanks to Brian McGuire (CSGA Governor & Point Grey Golf & Country Club Member) and Paul Batchelor (CSGA Governor & Vancouver Golf Club Member) for hosting. It was nice to see players that travelled from different parts of the country to participate in this event.

The Centennial celebration was initiated with a Satellite event on the day of our 100th anniversary, May 18th at Cutten Fields Golf Club. A big thank you to John Pate (CSGA Governor & L-R: Author, Jeffrey Reed Cutten Fields Member) for hosting the 97 members who played. & Patron, Jim Fraser CSGA Governor’s Denis Connor and David Zareski held a Satellite Tournament at New Ashburn Golf Club in Halifax on June 11th. Rain didn’t dampen the participants from playing a great game of golf and the 19th hole. The event also generated new CSGA Eastern applications. A few years ago, a vs Ontario tournament which is now an East vs West was initiated by Ottawa Hunt member and CSGA Governor, Rick Bennett and Beaconsfield member and Governor, Nick Ceravolo. This event has become one of our favourite and most popular tournaments. This year, Ottawa’s Camelot Golf and Country Club was the venue. Rosedale Golf Club and Scarboro Golf and Country Club couldn’t have provided us with a better Centennial Annual Tournament. Both courses were exceptional. The management and staff made everyone feel very welcome. Many members commented that this was the best annual tournament to date. Thanks to David Turner (CSGA Governor & Member) and Bruce McEwen (CSGA Member) for taking part in welcoming players at Scarboro Golf and Country Club. David also donated 3 beautiful antiqued golf bags that were prizes for “hickory shafted” closest to the hole competition at Scarboro’s famed 19th hole. And thanks to David Kerr (CSGA retiring Governor) for his support organizing the event along with John Chippindale (CSGA Member), John Mealia (CSGA Governor & Member) and Mike Mealia (CSGA Member) for organizing a welcoming committee of Rosedale Golf Club members.

CSGA rookie and Whitlock Golf Centre; Pierre Simon, President of the Normandy Club member Mark Ross, was the Chapter of the Senior Golfers Society of France Low Gross Senior Champion at presenting the awards to the Canadian team at the the Annual Tournament with an 62nd Deauville International Tournament in France outstanding score of 141. Summerlea Golf Club member Graham Cooke, was the Low Gross Super Senior Champion with a score of 154. Congratula- tions to both Mark Ross and Graham Cooke for their wins. In September the CSGA hosted the Devonshire Cup. It was a great opportunity to return to and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first international match played against the United States Seniors’ Golf Association. Although we finished up on the losing side, it was a very memorable few days. A full report on the event is included in this insert. We have many CSGA Members who are generous with their time to make our association outstanding. Thank you to each one of you who has participated in helping at these events. Because of your help, we all benefit and get to enjoy the game we love. We of course couldn’t operate without our staff, Executive Director, Ian Gibson and Assistant, Sheila Johnston. I have worked alongside these two over the last few years and have to say they extend themselves to see that our Association runs smoothly throughout the year. Ian has worked diligently with Golf Clubs across the country to ensure our visibility and make them aware of who we are and what we do. We currently have venues for almost every major event for the next four years. The CSGA has increasingly played a part with The Golf Canada Foundation. We are one of the largest contributors to the Foundation. Thanks to CSGA members for your continued financial donations. We make a difference to awareness of Canadian Golf and needy students. Many members have taken advantage of the relationships & opportunities to golf in other countries. Six CSGA Members registered to play in the 62nd Deauville International Tournament in France. They were Alain Brunet, Neil Cunningham, Jim Deeks, Michael Horrocks, Richard Stone and Kevin Whelly. The Canadian Team of Horrocks, Whelly, Stone and Cunningham defeated Germany in the semi-finals to win the Tournament. For the sixteen teams that did not make the playoffs there was a Fourball Stroke Play and Chapman Stroke Play Competition. Alain Brunet won the gross prize in the Chapman Stroke play taking home the Coupe de Cael Trophy. When receiving invitations for International events please ensure you act quickly. Spots for our members to attend are limited and typically available on a first come basis and these popular events are often in high demand. Seven of our members and their spouses attended the annual Seniors event at the Country Club of North Carolina on October 15 - 18th. This four day event is growing in popularity and makes for a nice trip on the way south for the winter. This year’s Canadian CSGA attendees were Jean Crispo, Greg Gardiner, Raymond Jessome, Dave McClintock, Danny Osadca, Bill Sheldon and Tod Stewart. For me, the last year has been very gratifying. I have been able to attend many CSGA events including Halifax, Ottawa, Cutten Fields, Royal Montreal for the Devonshire Cup Match and our annual tournament at Scarboro and Rosedale. I am so glad to make it to the different events as I can personally see the enjoyment that our members receive by coming together. As we move into the next 100 years, I can see that the CSGA will maintain the history and tradition that the first 100 years has given us. The CSGA truly is an Association that allows gentlemen senior golfers a place to enjoy the great game of golf. Yours Sincerely,

Mike Jackson, CSGA President PS: If you don’t have a copy of the historic CSGA’s Centennial book, you can order one by emailing [email protected]. The Western Satellite was a great success thanks to the efforts of our Governor’s Brian McGuire (Point Grey) and Paul Batchelor (Vancouver Golf Club). The format was match play, 2 man team net best ball, with 2 from Ontario playing against 2 from Quebec. The winner by only 4 points was Quebec who have won 3 of the last 4 years. At the outset Quebec was short 2 players, so to make the teams even, Ontario lent them 2 men and as luck would have it, those 2 men made full points on both days to help the Quebec victory.

The summer weather was very hot both L-R: Danny Tenaschuk, Mike Jackson, days but Camelot showed very well with Scott Ray lightning green speeds. Everyone in attendance at the closing lunch applauded the staff for the wonderful way the event was hosted. Special thanks to Danny Tenaschuk, our Camelot member for helping with the arrangements and another Camelot member and former Member of Parliament, Leo Duguay who arranged a tour of the parliament buildings.

As we have done the past few years the winning team all got a CSGA white hat and the second place team (no losers here), got black hats. Rick Bennett, Ontario Captain & Nick Ceravolo, Quebec Captain 100th Anniversary of the Devonshire Cup Matches

L-R: Don White & Clark MacKenzie Centennial Reunion Group

n September 1918, 10 golfers from the newly formed Canadian Seniors’ Golf Association Igathered at Royal Montreal Golf Club to represent their association against the United States Seniors’ Golf Association. At this tournament, the players competed for a trophy donated by Canada’s Governor General, the Duke of Devonshire. The matches have been played bi-annually ever since, except for breaks during the World Wars. It was therefore with great anticipation that 44 players, former players and officials gathered in September 2018 at Royal Montreal Golf Club to play in and celebrate the Centennial of the Devonshire Cup. Under the leadership of Clark MacKenzie and Don White, a weekend of events was planned for former players at Kanawaki and Elm Ridge Golf Clubs. A total of 26 golfers gathered for some friendly competition, but more importantly to reconnect with friends and reminisce about some great golfing experiences. A special thanks to CSGA member Guy Cyr for his tireless work and support at this event, especially with his camera. On Sunday evening, we all gathered at Royal Montreal Golf Club for a dinner to celebrate the Centenary. It was a wonderful evening of emotion, laughter and friendship as we reflected upon the last 100 years. A new award was introduced to honour two distinguished past players; the Don White – William F Souders Award will be awarded on the completion of the matches to one player from each team who displays outstanding sportsmanship and friendship during the Devonshire Cup Matches. Don White graciously accepted the award and everyone in the room clearly understood the special nature of these matches and the friendships that are built. The United States Seniors’ Golf Association presented a beautiful gift to mark the centenary, inscribed as follows: “To The Canadian Seniors' Golf Association From The United States Seniors' Golf Association 2018”

“Presented To The Canadian Seniors' Golf Association By The United States Seniors' Golf Association During the Centennial Devonshire Cup Matches At Royal Montreal L-R: Kelly Roberts, Timothy Hultquist Celebrating 100 Years of Friendship & Goodwill”

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner which continued the centennial theme. Having found the original menu from September 1918 in our archives, the club was able to recreate the same meal for us to enjoy. Let me just say golfers ate very well in 1918! On Monday play started with the Individual Stroke Play competition. The US Seniors Trophy for the best gross score was won by Chris Kertsos (CSGA) and the George S. Lyon Trophy for the best net score was won by Jon Verity (USSGA). As one player noted during the week, it was becoming clear that the middle sections of greens were being saved for the members. The golf course was in excellent condition and the pin positions offered a great challenge for all players.Tuesday was the first day of the Devonshire Cup with 11 fourball matches being contested with one point at stake for each of the front nine, back nine and overall. While all the matches were close the USSGA closed out day one with a 19.5 to 13.5 advantage. That night the Forest and Stream Club hosted the dinner. It sits on a magnificent location on the river, and the food was on a par with the location. It was an excellent evening. On Wednesday the CSGA was determined to close the gap from the first day, as play resumed with 11 four- ball matches. A narrow win on the day of 17.5 to 15.5 accomplished that objective and closed the gap to 4 points with 66 points at stake on the last day. L-R: Mike Jackson, Jon Verity On Wednesday evening we enjoyed another great dinner, again at Royal Montreal Golf Club. We were joined by Robert (Bob) Cote, the captain of RMGC. Through Bob we expressed our thanks to all the staff who were first class in all aspects of their operations, as well as the members for so graciously giving us access to their course and club. After a presentation by both captains to Bob, he shared some entertaining remarks, including advising our American guests that there is nothing wrong with finishing second! Before dinner was served, the new White-Souders Award was presented to its first, well deserving recipients – Mike Jackson (CSGA) and Jon Verity (USSGA).

Alongside the Devonshire Cup, there is also keen competition among the officers and reserves for the Heminway Cup. Despite long hours of planning this year’s events in detail, Ian Gibson (CSGA) obviously found some time to work on his game as he emerged victorious. Thursday morning presented the best weather of the week as 22 singles matches took

2018 International Team Back Row: L-R; Doug Alexander (CSGA Team Captain), Kelly Roberts (CSGA Vice President), Burke Hayes (USSGA Team Captain), Tim Hultquist (USSGA President), Bill Sedgwick (USSGA Vice President) Front Row: L-R; Mike Jackson (CSGA President), Bob Lamoureux (CSGA Immediate Past President), Ian Gibson (CSGA Executive Director), Bob Harrington (USSGA Team Secretary), Sam Carroll (USSGA Chair of Executive Committee) to the course. With the overall match delicately poised there was lots to play for and there were quite a few more serious expressions on players faces as they set out. Again, the quality of golf was high, and the matches were close. Space around the scoreboard was at a premium as mathematicians in blue and red tried to forecast the possible outcomes for their teams. It did come down to the last few matches when the United States Seniors’ Golf Association finally secured enough points to emerge victorious. The score in the singles was 39-27 and overall 74-58. At a luncheon following the matches in September 1918, Lord Richard Nevell representing the Governor General expressed hope that the competition would be the means of creating much good feeling and friendly rivalry between the members of the two Associations. I can say without any fear of contradiction that the players in September 2018 conducted themselves on and off the course in a manner that would have met with the approval of Lord Nevell. The tradition continues as we start the next 100 years. Doug Alexander, Team Captain
