The Almanack of Naval Ravikant THE ALMANACK OF NAVAL RAVIKANT THE ALMANACK OF GETTING RICH IS NOT JUST ABOUT LUCK; HAPPINESS IS NOT JUST A TRAIT WE ARE BORN WITH. These aspirations may seem out of reach, but building wealth and be- ing happy are skills we can learn. So what are these skills, and how do we learn them? What are the principles that should guide our efforts? What does progress really look like? Naval Ravikant is an entrepreneur, philosopher, and investor who RAVIKANT NAVAL has captivated the world with his principles for building wealth and creating long-term happiness. The Almanack of Naval Ravikant is a collection of Naval’s wisdom and experience from the last ten years, shared as a curation of his most insightful interviews and poignant reflections. Every attempt is made to present Naval in his own words. However, there are a few important points. → The transcripts have been edited for clarity and brevity (multiple times). → Not all sources are primary (some excerpts are from other writers quoting Naval). → I can’t be 100 percent certain of every source’s authenticity. → Concepts and interpretations change over time, medium, and context. → Please verify phrasing with a primary source before citing Naval from this text. → Please interpret generously. By definition, everything in this book is taken out of context. Interpretations will change over time. Read and interpret gen- Important NOTES ON THIS BOOK (Disclaimer) · 9 erously. Understand the original intent may be different than your interpretation in a different time, medium, format, and context. In the process of creating this book, I may have mistakenly re-contextualized, misinterpreted, or misunderstood things. As content passed through time, space, and medium, some phrasing may have shifted in flight. Every effort has been made to maintain the original intent, but errors are (very) possible. Interviews have been transcribed, edited, rearranged, and re-edited for readability. I did my best to keep Naval’s ideas in his own words. All brilliance in this book is Naval’s; any mistakes are mine. TWEETS AND TWEETSTORMS Tweets are formatted like pull quotes but are unique content. I use them to summarize or punctuate an idea from the main prose. This formatting shows I’m quoting a tweet. Tweetstorms are connected tweets, formatted like this: 10 · THE ALMANACK OF NAVAL RAVIKANT This is the first tweet in a tweetstorm. ↓ This is the second tweet. Tweetstorms are longer series of tweets all threaded together, similar to a blog post. BOLDED QUESTIONS Many excerpts are from interviews by fantastic creators like Shane Parrish, Sarah Lacy, Joe Rogan, and Tim Ferriss. The questions are bolded. For simplicity and continuity, I do not distinguish various interviewers from each other. NON-NARRATIVE This is a choose-your-own adventure book. Jump to anything that interests you and skip anything that doesn’t. LOOK IT UP If you find a word or concept you’re not familiar with, look it up. Or, read on to find more context. Some referenced ideas are expanded upon later in the book. CITATIONS Citations (like [1]) indicate the end of an excerpt. I’ve done my best to maintain context for smooth reading. Sources are in the appendix for reference. Some sources appear many times and do not appear in order. Important NOTES ON THIS BOOK (Disclaimer) · 11 FOREWORD BY TIM FERRISS Dear Reader, It feels strange for me to write these words, as I committed many years ago to never write forewords. I’m making a rare exception in this case for three reasons. First, a free version of this book is being offered to the world in a digital/Kindle/eBook format with no strings attached. Second, I’ve known Naval for more than a decade and have long wanted someone to compile this book. Third, I’m increasing the like- lihood of Naval’s next child being named “Tim” (I’ll settle for “Timbo,” if he prefers). Naval is one of the smartest people I’ve ever met, and he’s also one of the most courageous. Not in the “run into the fire with- out thinking twice” sense, but in the “think twice and then tell everyone they’re focusing on the wrong fire” sense. He is rarely part of any consensus, and the uniqueness of his life, lifestyle, family dynamics, and startup successes is a reflection of con- scious choices he’s made to do things differently. Foreword · 13 He can be as blunt as a foot to the face, but that’s part of what I love and respect about him: you never have to guess what Naval is thinking. I’ve never had to guess how he’s feeling about me, someone else, or a situation. This is a huge relief in a world of double-talk and ambiguity. We’ve shared a lot of meals, shared a lot of deals, and hopped around the world together. That’s all to say that, while I con- sider myself a good people-watcher, I consider myself an excellent Naval-watcher. He is one of the people I call most for advice, and I’ve watched him in many habitats through many seasons: easy times, hard times, recessions, booms— you name it. Sure, he’s the CEO and a co-founder of AngelList. Sure, he previously co-founded Vast.com and Epinions, which went public as part of Shopping.com. Sure, he’s an angel investor and has invested in many mega successes, including Twitter, Uber, Yammer, and OpenDNS, to name but a few. That’s all great, of course, and it shows Naval is a world-class operator instead of an armchair philosopher. But I don’t take his perspectives, maxims, and thoughts seri- ously because of the business stuff. There are lots of miserable “successful” people out there. Be careful about modeling those, as you will get all the bathwater with the baby. I take Naval seriously because he: → Questions nearly everything → Can think from first principles → Tests things well 14 · THE ALMANACK OF NAVAL RAVIKANT → Is good at not fooling himself → Changes his mind regularly → Laughs a lot → Thinks holistically → Thinks long-term → And…doesn’t take himself too goddamn seriously. That last one is important. This book will give you a good taste of what that cocktail of bullets looks like in Naval’s head. So, pay attention…but don’t simply parrot his words. Follow his advice…but only if it holds up after scrutiny and stress- testing in your own life.

  • The Controlled Natural Language of Randall Munroe's Thing Explainer
The Controlled Natural Language of Randall Munroe's Thing Explainer Tobias Kuhn Department of Computer Science, VU University Amsterdam, Netherlands [email protected] Abstract. It is rare that texts or entire books written in a Controlled Natural Language (CNL) become very popular, but exactly this has hap- pened with a book that has been published last year. Randall Munroe's Thing Explainer uses only the 1'000 most often used words of the English language together with drawn pictures to explain complicated things such as nuclear reactors, jet engines, the solar system, and dishwashers. This restricted language is a very interesting new case for the CNL com- munity. I describe here its place in the context of existing approaches on Controlled Natural Languages, and I provide a first analysis from a scientific perspective, covering the word production rules and word dis- tributions. 1 Introduction The recent book Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words [12] by Randall Munroe (who is most well-known for his xkcd webcomics) is a very in- teresting case for the research field of Controlled Natural Languages (CNL) [11]. It is \a book of pictures and simple words [...] using only the ten hundred words in our language that people use the most" [12] and it is both, fun and totally serious. The quote is from the introduction of the book, and therefore it is itself written in this language of only the 1'000 most commonly used English words (and so is, of course, the title of the book). The following paragraph is another example from the section about nuclear power plants, explaining radioactivity: The special heat is made when tiny pieces of the metal break down.

Hour 8: The Thing Explainer! Those of you who are fans of xkcd’s Randall Munroe may be aware of his book Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words, in which he describes a variety of things using only the thousand simplest words in the English language. We liked the idea so much that we’ve decided to Thing-Explain a whole bunch of things his book didn’t get to. Since we’ve broken them down into little words, surely you’ll be able to correctly identify the assorted stuff we’ve translated below. Section I. Quotations The questions below have taken famous quotes whose language is just a little too highfalutin for the average person and made them more accessible. They are taken from a wide variety of sources: songs, literature, history, movies—anywhere, really. From our Thing-Explained version of the quote, either give us the original quote or (if that’s too unwieldy) just name its source. 1. The people who make laws cannot make a law making any god-following special or stopping other god-followings; or one stopping free talking and news-writing; or one ending the right of people to hang out without fighting or to write to the people who run things when they're not happy about something that's happened to them. 2. If your line of leaves and sticks is moving around, don't get worried. It's just the lady who runs one of the months cleaning things out for spring. 3. I am a person who believes in the old book.

Foreign Rights Guide London International Book Fair 2020 www.thegernertco.com [email protected] fiction Doubleday – April 28, 2020 Welcome back to Camino Island, where anything can happen —even a murder in CAMINO WINDS the midst of a hurricane, which might prove to be the perfect crime . John Grisham Just as Bruce Cable’s Bay Books is preparing for the return of bestselling author Mercer Mann, Hurricane Leo veers from its predicted course and heads straight for the island. Florida’s governor orders a mandatory evacuation, and most residents board up their houses and flee to the mainland, but Bruce decides to stay and ride out the storm. The hurricane is devastating: homes and condos are leveled, hotels and storefronts ruined, streets flooded, and a dozen people lose their lives. One of the apparent victims is Nelson Kerr, a friend of Bruce’s and an author of thrillers. But the nature of Nelson’s injuries suggests that the storm wasn’t the cause of his death: He has suffered several suspicious blows to the head. Who would want Nelson dead? The local police are overwhelmed in the aftermath of the storm and ill equipped to handle the case. Bruce begins to wonder if the shady characters in Nelson’s novels might be more real than fictional. And somewhere on Nelson’s computer is the manuscript of his new novel. Could the key to the case be right there—in black and white? As Bruce starts to investigate, what he discovers between the lines is more shocking than any of Nelson’s plot twists—and far more dangerous.

It explores the obstacles resulting from the text-image interplay. At the macroscale, while such institutions in Poland as the Book Institute or translator associations do develop standards and provide information on the book market and good (or actual) practices, they never explicitly mention comic books – the closest one can find is “illustrated books” or “others”. Additionally, popular science literature – which some might say is uninteresting – is much less discussed than artistic translation (with due allowance for comic books and graphic novels) despite having a tradition of using words and images together. Thing Explainer does seem to use “other” translatory techniques: firstly, because the author decided to use only the one thousand most common English words (a semantic dominant to be retained in Polish); and secondly, because the illustrations – from diagrammatic to extremely detailed – are an indispensable, though variably integrated with the verbal, medium of knowledge transfer. This paper focuses on the second aspect. Specifically, it discusses: the rigorous requirements for text volume and location (exacerbated by the said 1000- word list); technical issues (including choosing typefaces, formatting text, modifying graphics, etc.); the overlapping responsibilities of the editors, the translator and the * This article was originally published in Polish in Przekładaniec 2017, vol.
