    ‘A WORLD APART’ – The Donegal District Lunatic Asylum Number of Registrar Name Where Chargable This exhibition curated by the Donegal County Museum and the Archives Service, Donegal County Council in association with the HSE was inspired by the ending of the provision of residential mental health services at the St. Conal’s Hospital site. The hospital has been an integral part of Letterkenny and County Donegal for 154 years. Often shrouded by mythology and stigma, the asylum fulfilled a necessary role in society but one that is currently undergoing radical change.This exhibition, by putting into context the earliest history of mental health services in Donegal hopes to raise public awareness of mental health. The exhibition is organised in conjunction with Little John Nee’s artist’s residency in An Grianan Theatre and his performance of “The Mental”. This project is supported by PEACE III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Donegal County Council. COUNTYDUBLIN, I was born in Glenelly, Co. Tyrone, on 26th September, 1900 and after leaving school I went to Hughes' Academy in Derry City. I lived at 17 Foyle St. in the private apartments of the group of buildings known as Conlan's Rooms My uncle administered this property. The Irish Volunteers used these buildings as Assembly Rooms. My "keeper" was Miss Conlan and Miss Reddy - both of these ladies were elderly spinsters. I think I actually became a member of the National Volunteers about the middle of 1914. I was intended for the Church, and while getting a grind from Ft. Jos. Lagan, C.C., Cranagh, preparatory to entering St. Columb's College - a brother of Dr. Lagan, the donor of the Lagan Cup to the Gaelic Athletic Association - I persuaded him to take me into a juvenile section of the local Company that he directed. This was probably the Fianna. When the Rising occurred in Dublin during Easter Week 1916, there was some activity in Derry. A number of the leading Volunteers were arrested and subsequently interned.

Dear Ms. Gray, The Health Service Executive Nursing Home Inspection Team from a Medical, Nursing and Environmental Health perspective inspected Lake House Private Nursing Home, Portnablagh, Dunfanaghy, Co. Donegal on 6th March 2007. The inspection commenced at 10am and was completed by 5pm. This inspection was unannounced. There were 54 residents on this date. The Nursing Home is currently fully registered for 57 residents. Issues identified in the previous Inspection Report dated 18/07/2006 have been satisfactorily addressed. Current Inspection The following issues require your attention and action.
